Book excerpt: Horizontally curved girder bridges are often utilized for highway interchanges and other projects with restricted right-of-way. The large torsional demands caused by the girder geometry often require these systems to have extensive bracing, typically in the form of cross frames or diaphragms, to increase the torsional stiffness of the girder system during the construction phase. The most critical stage for the bracing is during the deck placement, when the noncomposite girders must resist the full construction load. Partial depth precast concrete panels (PCPs) are prestressed concrete panels used primarily as stay-in-place (SIP) formwork for straight girder systems. They are placed on full-length extruded bedding strips epoxied to the girder top flange, and the remaining depth of the deck is cast above. This is a time-efficient method of construction, and has become an attractive option due to ease of constructability and deck longevity. Although the panels have not been used on horizontally curved girder systems, there is a desire by bridge owners and contractors to use the forms in some curved girder applications. In addition to using the panels on curved girder applications, engaging the in-plane shear stiffness of the panels may lead to significant bracing in both straight and horizontally curved girder applications. A research investigation focused on measuring the behavior of PCPs acting as a shear diaphragm, as well as to develop an adequate connection between the PCPs and the girders was conducted at The University of Texas at Austin. Four PCP connection details were developed and tested at two different bedding strip heights. These connections were designed for a range of capacities, and in-plane shear load was applied until failure using a frame mechanism assembly. The experimental results showed that the connected PCPs had significant shear stiffness and strength, with the panels reaching shear capacities between 91 and 154 kips before failure depending on the connection detail that was utilized. A 46 to 70 percent increase in shear stiffness was also observed when the bedding strip height was reduced from 4 inches to 1⁄2 inch. All panels greatly exceeded the design capacity using the ACI design predictions, with 7 of 8 panels eventually failing due to concrete side face breakout. The eighth PCP failed from weld rupture in which the weld connecting the WT and the girder flange began to unzip.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "To ensure sufficient composite action to meet structural strength and stiffness requirements in precast concrete sandwich wall panels, the designer must provide adequate shear transfer between concrete wythes. In a typical sandwich panel, shear transfer may be provided through several different mechanisms. These mechanisms include: (1) solid concrete regions; (2) mechanical connectors that pass through the insulation wythe; and, (3) bond between the concrete wythes and the insulation. The objective to the work presented in this report is to investigate the flexural behavior of sandwich panels and the contribution to composite action provided by regions of solid concrete, wythe connectors, and bond. Tests were performed on four full-scale precast sandwich wall panels. A Prototype panel was tested, which included regions of solid concrete in the insulation wythe, metal wythe connectors, and no attempt was made to disrupt the bond between the concrete wythes and the insulation wythe. The degree of composite action developed by each of the different shear transfer mechanisms was then evaluated by testing three additional panels that included only one mechanism of shear transfer (solid concrete, wythe connectors, or bond). It was found that, for the panel geometries and materials treated in this study, the solid concrete regions provide most of the strength and stiffness that contribute to composite behavior. Steel M-tie connectors and bond between the insulation and concrete contribute relatively little to composite behavior. Therefore, for design purposes, it is recommended that solid concrete regions be proportioned to provide all of the required composite action in a precast sandwich wall panel. A precast concrete sandwich wall panel constructed similarly to the Prototype panel treated in this study will behave as a fully composite panel in terms of service load-deflection behavior and flexural strength."

This book was released on 2014 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study focuses on the evaluation of the static and dynamic behavior of cementitious sandwich panels with parallel steel wire shear connectors. The study is divided into two parts: (i) large-scale experimental evaluation of different structural sandwich members subjected to different types of loading regimes, and (ii) analytical procedures to predict the behavior of such panels. However, and due to the lack of experimental data on the behavior of such sandwich panels, the emphasis of this study is on full-scale experimental evaluation. In the analytical part of the study, modified procedures, based on the experimental observations, following the general guidelines of the American Concrete Institute (ACI 318-11) were adopted. Also, the experimental program focused on assessing the out-of-plane flexural behavior of floor/roof sandwich slabs. Both simply supported and two-span continuous large-scale floor/roof slabs, with different boundary conditions and details, were evaluated. The experimental results were compared to the analytical predictions and well agreement between the results was achieved. The study also included several large-scale element experiments that were conducted on walls subjected to axial, shear, eccentric and flexural loadings conditions as well as exterior and interior corner connections. These tests are considered to be a pioneering research work that are not available to-date in published literature. A summary of the test setup, test procedures and experimental results that included quasi-static and cyclic load-displacement (P-ō) and Stress- Strain ([sigma]−[epsilon]) curves are presented and discussed herein. The comprehensive experimental program provided much needed information to the structural engineers that lack the knowledge on the service and ultimate performance of this type of sandwich structural elements. For example, the experimental results provided important information on the suitability of the sandwich panels with parallel wire connectors for the use as floors and roof slabs. In addition, the experimental results identified the different failure modes that are not similar to those for solid concrete elements. The simplified analytical procedures that followed, in general, the requirements of ACI 318-11 with justifiable modifications succeeded to provide conservative estimates to the capacity of each structural sandwich element evaluated in this study. Numerical design examples for typical residential buildings that were performed using the proposed analytical procedures are also presented. Conclusions drawn from this pioneering study is summarized and recommendations for future research work is presented in this thesis.

Book excerpt: The International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib) is a pre-normative organization. 'Pre-normative' implies pioneering work in codification. This work has now been realized with the fib Model Code 2010. The objectives of the fib Model Code 2010 are to serve as a basis for future codes for concrete structures, and present new developments with regard to concrete structures, structural materials and new ideas in order to achieve optimum behaviour. The fib Model Code 2010 is now the most comprehensive code on concrete structures, including their complete life cycle: conceptual design, dimensioning, construction, conservation and dismantlement. It is expected to become an important document for both national and international code committees, practitioners and researchers. The fib Model Code 2010 was produced during the last ten years through an exceptional effort by Joost Walraven (Convener; Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands), Agnieszka Bigaj-van Vliet (Technical Secretary; TNO Built Environment and Geosciences, The Netherlands) as well as experts out of 44 countries from five continents.

Book Synopsis Basic Principles of Concrete Structures by : Xianglin Gu
Download or read book Basic Principles of Concrete Structures written by Xianglin Gu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-09 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the latest version of designing codes both for buildings and bridges (GB50010-2010 and JTG D62-2004), this book starts from steel and concrete materials, whose properties are very important to the mechanical behavior of concrete structural members. Step by step, analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete members under basic loading types (tension, compression, flexure, shearing and torsion) and environmental actions are introduced. The characteristic of the book that distinguishes it from other textbooks on concrete structures is that more emphasis has been laid on the basic theories of reinforced concrete and the application of the basic theories in design of new structures and analysis of existing structures. Examples and problems in each chapter are carefully designed to cover every important knowledge point. As a basic course for undergraduates majoring in civil engineering, this course is different from either the previously learnt mechanics courses or the design courses to be learnt. Compared with mechanics courses, the basic theories of reinforced concrete structures cannot be solely derived by theoretical analysis. And compared with design courses, this course emphasizes the introduction of basic theories rather than simply being a translation of design specifications. The book will focus on both the theoretical derivations and the engineering practices.
