Book excerpt: Experimental investigations were made on several two-dimensional models to determine the hydrodynamic coefficients of heave motion. The series of cylindrical models representing small waterplane area twin hull configurations were oscillated vertically at the free water surface at various amplitudes. The results, presented in this report, indicate some significant force nonlinearity with amplitude. Both added mass and damping were appreciably affected by cross sectional hull geometry and somewhat by strut thickness. Draft variations least influenced the coefficients of heave motion. (Author).

Book excerpt: A potential flow problem, dealing with twin horizontal cylinders of arbitrary cross sectional forms vertically oscillating in a free surface is investigated. An associated experiment is carried out for four different sets of twin cylinders. The results from the theory and the experiment are compared and are found in good agreement. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prediction of the added mass and damping of a heaving, two-dimensional, captured air bubble, published by Ogilvie in 1969, is verified, within limits, by the experiment discussed in this paper. Only the depth of the lip, relative to the width of the bubble, appears to exert a strong influence on the results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of experiments to determine the fluid loadings on harmonically oscillating circular cylinders show that the inertial (added mass) component of the loading is in good agreement with the inertial loading predicted by potential flow theory. The results show, however, that the commonly used velocity-squared law for damping is inadequate. In fact, experiments indicate that fluid damping is sensibly viscous (linear) for vibration amplitudes up to 0.8 diameter peak-to-peak and is a combination of viscous and velocity-squared damping at larger amplitudes. This new damping law has important implications for the design of offshore structures. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-dimensional cylinders of arbitrary shape undergo small-amplitude forced sinusoidal motion in sway, heave and roll in (or near) the free surface of an infinitely deep ideal fluid. Equations for the theoretical fluid response to 'second-order' are derived and their solution formulated in terms of Fredholm integral equations. A numerical procedure is developed and applied to three surface-piercing cylinder sections. Graphs of added mass, damping coefficient, pressure distribution, force and asymptotic wave amplitude as functions of non-dimensional wave number k are presented for the pure motions and for combined sway and heave, sway and roll, and heave and roll. The results indicate the significance of second-order coupling forces which result in the later motion cases. Additionally, second-order response coefficients are shown to be important in the higher frequency range. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The damping and added mass coefficients for a shiplike form oscillating at a free surface are usually approximated by a 'strip calculation' in which two-dimensional values for shapes similar to sections of the body are summed over the length. For the three-dimensional body the real section values differ from the local values used in this procedure because of the three-dimensional nature of the real flow caused by body geometry and forward speed. This report presents experimental results which show the magnitude of the three-dimensional effect for a prolate spheroid undergoing forced heaving oscillations while moving longitudinally in calm water. Local hydrodynamic forces on a spheroid model were measured by a number of flush pressure gauges distributed around the girth of the model at several sections. The sectional added mass and damping were than obtained by resolving the integral of pressure at each section into in phase and quadrature components. Total constraint forces were measured and checked against the longitudinally integrated pressure forces. Results were compared with strip computations using two-dimensional cylinder data. In general, the greatest discrepancies were found at the ends of the model. At amidships, measured values agreed quite clsosely with two-dimensional results. At high frequencies, forward speed was found to have small effect on added mass. However, at high frequencies and high forward speed, negative damping was found at some sections. (Author).
