Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book bridges the gap between general plasma physics lectures and the real world problems in MHD stability. In order to support the understanding of concepts and their implication, it refers to real world problems such as toroidal mode coupling or nonlinear evolution in a conceptual and phenomenological approach. Detailed mathematical treatment will involve classical linear stability analysis and an outline of more recent concepts such as the ballooning formalism. The book is based on lectures that the author has given to Master and PhD students in Fusion Plasma Physics. Due its strong link to experimental results in MHD instabilities, the book is also of use to senior researchers in the field, i.e. experimental physicists and engineers in fusion reactor science. The volume is organized in three parts. It starts with an introduction to the MHD equations, a section on toroidal equilibrium (tokamak and stellarator), and on linear stability analysis. Starting from there, the ideal MHD stability of the tokamak configuration will be treated in the second part which is subdivided into current driven and pressure driven MHD. This includes many examples with reference to experimental results for important MHD instabilities such as kinks and their transformation to RWMs, infernal modes, peeling modes, ballooning modes and their relation to ELMs. Finally the coverage is completed by a chapter on resistive stability explaining reconnection and island formation. Again, examples from recent tokamak MHD such as sawteeth, CTMs, NTMs and their relation to disruptions are extensively discussed.

Book excerpt: There is experimental and theoretical evidence of anomalous transport near the magnetic axis in tokamak plasmas, a region in which drift modes are linearly stable. Experimental evidence suggests that this additional transport is strongly affected by the plasma geometry (i.e., elongation and triangularity), more so than drift modes[1]. The finite-beta kinetic ballooning instability is predicted to exist close to the magnetic axis and is strongly affected by the plasma geometry. In this study, we explore the properties of the kinetic ballooning mode with the comprehensive electromagnetic kinetic stability calculations of the FULL code. Using FULL, we quantify the parametric dependence of kinetic ballooning transport on various plasma parameters, including the flux-surface elongation and triangularity, the normalized pressure beta and the flux-surface inverse aspect ratio. Based on these stability calculations, an algebraic kinetic ballooning transport model is developed. Also included in this dissertation are two independent studies of transport in tokamak plasmas, carried out with the BALDUR predictive transport code. In the first study, the sensitivity of these transport simulations to boundary and initial conditions is examined. In the second, a transport model developed by Ottaviani, Horton and Erba (OHE) is incorporated into the BALDUR code, and the density and temperature profiles predicted by this model are compared to experiment for a series of experimental discharges.

Book excerpt: Stable high-beta plasmas are required for the tokamak to attain an economical fusion reactor. Recently, intense neutral beam heating experiments in tokamaks have shown new effects on plasma stability and confinement associated with high beta plasmas. The observed spectrum of MHD fluctuations at high beta is clearly dominated by the n = 1 mode when the q = 1 surface is in the plasma. The m/n = 1/1 mode drives other n = 1 modes through toroidal coupling and n> 1 modes through nonlinear coupling. On PDX, with near perpendicular injection, a resonant interaction between the n = 1 internal kink and the trapped fast ions results in loss of beam particles and heating power. Key parameters in the theory are the value of q0 and the injection angle. High frequency broadband magnetic fluctuations have been observed on ISX-B and D-III and a correlation with the deterioration of plasma confinement was reported. During enhanced confinement (H-mode) discharges in divertor plasmas, two new edge instabilities were observed, both localized radially near the separatrix. By assembling results from the different tokamak experiments, it is found that the simple theoretical ideal MHD beta limit has not been exceeded. Whether this represents an ultimate tokamak limit or if beta optimized configurations (Dee- or bean-shaped plasmas) can exceed this limit and perhaps enter a second regime of stability remains to be clarified.

Book excerpt: Limitations on high-.beta. tokamaks are imposed by a number of ideal and resistive MHD instabilities. The present paper reports results on three such studies: (1) Numerical analysis using the Princeton PEST code on .beta. optimization of tokamaks for low toroidal mode numbers n; (2) analytic and numerical results on ideal ballooning modes with high n; and (3) analytic and numerical results on resistive ballooning modes at high n.
