Book excerpt: The J-integral has significant path dependence immediately adjacent to a blunted crack tip under small-scale yielding conditions in an elastic-plastic material subject to mode I loads and plane-strain conditions. Since the J-integral, evaluated on a contour remote from the crack tip, can be used as the one fracture-mechanics parameter required to represent the intensity of the load when small-scale yielding conditions exist, J retains its role as a parameter characterizing the crack-tip stress fields, at least for materials modelled by the von Mises flow theory. Some results obtained using both the finite-element method and the slip-line theory are suggestive of a situation in which an outer field parameterized by a path-independent value of J controls the deformation in an inner or crack-tip field in which J is path dependent. The outer field is basically the solution to the crack problem when large deformation effects involved in the blunting are ignored. Thus, the conventional small-strain approaches in which the crack-tip deformation is represented by a singularity have been successful in characterizing such features as the crack-tip opening displacement in terms of a value of the J-integral on a remote contour. An interesting deduction concerns a nonlinear elastic material with characteristics in monotonic stressing similar to an elastic-plastic material. Since J is path independent everywhere in such a material, the stress and strain fields near the crack tip in such a material must differ greatly from those arising in the elastic-plastic materials studied so far. This result is of significance because it is believed that such nonlinear elastic constitutive laws can represent the limited strain-path independence suggested by models for plastic flow of polycrystalline aggregates based on crystalline slip within grains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis and ADINA contains the proceedings of the Fourth ADINA Conference held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on June 15-17, 1983. Separating the papers presented in the conference as chapters, this book first elucidates the use of ADINA for analysis of mines with explosive fills. Subsequent chapters explore the use of ADINA in soil mechanics; nonlinear shell analysis; analysis of bond between prestressed steel and concrete; determination and simulation of stable crack growth; offshore structures analysis; modeling of traveling-loads and time-dependent masses; and comparison of two slideline methods. Other notable applications of ADINA are also shown.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume represent a considerable cross-section of the field of fracture mechanics, a testimony to the breadth of interest that Mel and Max Williams' friends share with them. Several are expanded versions of papers that were given in special sessions honoring them at the 1997 Ninth International Conference on Fracture Mechanics in Sydney, Australia. The subjects treated in this volume can be classified as follows: dynamic fracture problems as viewed primarily from a classical continuum point of view; analysis of relatively general crack geometrics; fracture problems of polymers and other relatively ductile materials; scaling rules that allow extension of results obtained at one size to be translated into behavior at different size scales; problems dealing with interactions that produce complex stress fields; fracture problems directly appropriate to composite materials; analysis of stress concentrations in anisotropic, elastic solids; and the problem of cracks in thin plates bending. This volume will be of interest to engineers and scientists working on all aspects of the physics and mechanics of fracture.

Book excerpt: This book is based on 40 years of research and teaching in the fields of fracture mechanics and plasticity. It will bring students and engineers from various disciplines up to date on key concepts that have become increasingly important in the design of safety-relevant engineering structures in general and in modern lightweight structures in the transportation industry in particular. Primarily intended for graduate students in the engineering sciences and practicing structural engineers, it employs a multidisciplinary approach that comprises theoretical concepts, numerical methods, and experimental techniques. In addition, it includes a wealth of analytical and numerical examples, used to illustrate the applications of the concepts discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a working knowledge of the modeling and engineering applications of shape memory alloys (SMAs), beginning with a rigorous introduction to continuum mechanics and continuum thermodynamics as they relate to the development of SMA modeling.Modern SMAs can recover from large amounts of bending and deformation, and millions of repetitions within recoverable ranges. SMAs are used in the medical industry to create stents, in the dental industry to create dental and orthodontic archwires, and in the aerospace industry to create fluid fittings. The text presents a unified approach to the constitutive modeling of SMAs, including modeling of magnetic and high temperature SMAs.
