This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 914 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed coverage of advanced combustion topics from the author of Principles of combustion, Second Edition Turbulence, turbulent combustion, and multiphase reacting flows have become major research topics in recent decades due to their application across diverse fields, including energy, environment, propulsion, transportation, industrial safety, and nanotechnology. Most of the knowledge accumulated from this research has never been published in book form—until now. Fundamentals of Turbulent and Multiphase Combustion presents up-to-date, integrated coverage of the fundamentals of turbulence, combustion, and multiphase phenomena along with useful experimental techniques, including non-intrusive, laser-based measurement techniques, providing a firm background in both contemporary and classical approaches. Beginning with two full chapters on laminar premixed and non-premixed flames, this book takes a multiphase approach, beginning with more common topics and moving on to higher-level applications. In addition, Fundamentals of Turbulent and Multiphase Combustion: Addresses seven basic topical areas in combustion and multiphase flows, including laminar premixed and non-premixed flames, theory of turbulence, turbulent premixed and non-premixed flames, and multiphase flows Covers spray atomization and combustion, solid-propellant combustion, homogeneous propellants, nitramines, reacting boundary-layer flows, single energetic particle combustion, and granular bed combustion Provides experimental setups and results whenever appropriate Supported with a large number of examples and problems as well as a solutions manual, Fundamentals of Turbulent and Multiphase Combustion is an important resource for professional engineers and researchers as well as graduate students in mechanical, chemical, and aerospace engineering.

This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals of the Symposium were to draw together researchers in turbulence and combustion so as to highlight advances and challenge the boundaries to our understanding of turbulent mixing and combus tion from both experimental and simulation perspectives; to facilitate cross-fertilization between leaders in these two fields. These goals were noted to be important given that turbulence itself is viewed as the last great problem in classical physics and the addition of chemical reaction amplifies the difficulties enormously. The papers that have been included here reflect the richness of our subject. Turbulence is rich and complex in its own right. And, its inner structure, hidden in the morass of scales, large and small, can dominate transport. Earlier IUTAM Symposia have considered this field, Eddy Structure Identification in Free Turbulent Flows, Bonnet and Glauser (eds) 1992 and Simulation and Identification of Organized Structures in Flows, Sorensen, Hopfinger and Aubry (eds) 1997. The combustion community is well served by its specialized events, most notable is the bi annual International Combustion Symposium, held under the auspices of the Combustion Institute. Mixing is often considered somewhere in between these two. This broad landscape was addressed in this Sym posium in a somewhat temporal linear fashion of increasing complexity. The lectures considered the many challenges posed by adding one ele ment to the base formed by others: turbulence and turbulent mixing in the absence of combustion through to turbulent mixing dominated by chemistry and combustion.
Book Synopsis Regimes of Non-Premixed Flame-Vortex Interactions by :
Download or read book Regimes of Non-Premixed Flame-Vortex Interactions written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed studies of flame-vortex interactions are extremely valuable to improve our understanding of turbulent combustion regimes. Combined experimental and numerical studies have already been performed in the premixed case during previous investigations. Therefore, we decided to carry out a detailed experimental investigation on the regimes observed during interaction of a vortex ring and a non-premixed, diluted, hydrogen/air, laminar counterflow flame. To obtain the needed information, several optical diagnostic techniques have been used, in particular, planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) of acetone to quantify vortex structure and speed, simultaneous OH PLIF and Rayleigh measurements, and simultaneous OH PLIF and particle-imaging velocimetry (PIV) measurements. A post-processing of the results combined with direct simulations using detailed chemistry and transport models to check the quality of the postprocessing procedures has led to the construction of a spectral interaction diagram. Eight interaction types were found, emphasizing the relative importance of competing physical phenomena such as straining, curvature, wrinkling, roll-up, and extinction. In particular, we observe two different types of extinction, one due to the combined action of curvature and straining, and the other purely due to straining effects. It was also observed that many vortices are too small or dissipate too rapidly to influence the flame. In other cases, the vortex ring can lead to the formation of pockets of oxidizer burning in the fuel part of the domain. These regimes and the limits between them have important implications for the modeling of turbulent non-premixed combustion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the course of this year, we have concentrated on the validation of the transport element method in two dimensions and its extension to: three dimensional flow, to reacting flow with finite Arrhenius rates, and to variable-density flow including the effect of gravity. Comparisons with experimental data on a reacting shear layer with low heat release show that the numerical results agree very closely with the measurements of the velocity statistics, the passive scalar statistics, the product formation rate and the product thickness. Numerical studies are used to establish the dependence of the product formation rate on the Reynolds number, the Lewis number and the Damkohler number. Studies of a variable-density flow focused on the effects of density gradients on the structure of turbulence in both the momentum driven and gravity-driven reacting flow. In particular, how does heat release change the rates of growth and mixing within the layer via the impact of the expansion field and the baroclinic vorticity generation due to the density gradients. For this purpose, examples of a horizontal premixed reacting shear layer and a vertical jet diffusion flame are analyzed. Numerical simulation, Turbulent combustion, Vortex methods. (mjm).
