Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flow over an NACA 0015 airfoil undergoing a constant rate of change of angle of attack was experimentally studied over a range of tunnel speeds and rotation rates. Surface pressure transducers coupled with a microcomputer-based data acquisition system were used to collect surface-pressure data at the rate of 4000 samples per second; data reduction was also microcomputer-based. Data was reduced in two forms: (1) C sub l versus alpha curves through stall were determined for each dynamic experimental configuration. This was accomplished by numerical integration of pressure data at a number of angles through stall, each data point representing the average of five experiments at the same experimental conditions. These curves indicated a slight decrease in C sub l - alpha slope with increasing angle of attack angular rate. (2) Increase in stall angle of attack of the dynamic over the static case was plotted against a nondimensional angular rate parameter (defined as the product of one-half the chord length and angular rotation rate, divided by the freestream velocity). This comparison gave rise to an apparently universal curve of nondimensional angular rotation rate versus increase in stall angle of attack. This curve was in agreement in some sense with previous experiments using stall indicators other than the actual stall.

Book Synopsis Numerical Investigation of the Effect of Leading Edge Geometry on Dynamic Stall of Airfoils by :
Download or read book Numerical Investigation of the Effect of Leading Edge Geometry on Dynamic Stall of Airfoils written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic stall of rapidly pitching and oscillating airfoils is investigated by the numerical solution of the full compressible unsteady two- dimensional Navier-Stokes equations using an alternating-direction-implicit scheme. The flow is assumed to be fully turbulent, and the turbulent stresses are modelled by the Baldwin-Lomax eddy viscosity model. Three airfoils (NACA 0012, NACA 0012-33, and NACA 0012-63) are analyzed for the purpose of examining the influence of leading-edge geometry on unsteady flow separation. It is found that a larger leading edge radius, thicker contouring of the forward part of the airfoil, or increasing reduced frequency results in delaying flow separation and formation of the dynamic stall vortex to a higher angle of attack, yielding higher peak Cl. Within the scope of this study, the pressure gradient encountered by the flow at initial separation is found to be independent of reduced frequency and freestream speed. The critical pressure gradient is dependent on leading edge radius and increases for decreasing leading edge radius.
Book Synopsis Three-Dimensional Velocity and Vorticity Measuring and Image Analysis Techniques by : Th. Dracos

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of this volume reflect to a large extent the efforts made by a group of Institutes at the ETH Zürich to develop new techniques for measurements of flows in fluids in the last decade. The motivation came from the study of tr~sport and mixing processes in natural and industrial systems. One of the characteristic properties of turbulence is its high mixing efficiency. The techniques developed are therefore suitable, although not exclusively, for turbulence measurements. They can be subdivided into point-measurements and field-measurements. The aim of the point-measurements developed is to determine the three components of the velocity and all their first derivatives with good temporal resolution and accuracy in turbulent flows. The old and weIl established method of hot-wire anemometry was used for this purpose. One of the main achievements in this context is the construction of miniature multi-wire probes. This technique was introduced to the Institute of Hydromechanics and Water Resources Management of ETH Zürich by Profs. A. Tsinober and E. Kit from Tel-Aviv University. This was made possible by the generous financial support by ETH, for which I would like to express my gratitude on this occasion. In addition, Dr. F.E. Joergensen from DANTEC contributed an example of recent developments in the hardware ofConstant Temperature Anemometry (CTA), for which I am very thankful.

Book Synopsis An Experimental Study of Dynamic Stall on Advanced Airfoil Sections. Volume 1: Summary of the Experiment by :
Download or read book An Experimental Study of Dynamic Stall on Advanced Airfoil Sections. Volume 1: Summary of the Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The static and dynamic characteristics of seven helicopter sections and a fixed-wing supercritical airfoil were investigated over a wide range of nominally two-dimensional flow conditions, at Mach numbers up to 0.30 and Reynolds numbers up to 4x10 to the 6th power. Details of the experiment, estimates of measurement accuracy, and test conditions are described in this volume. The results of the experiment show important differences between airfoils, which would otherwise tend to be masked by differences in wind tunnels, particularly in steady cases. All of the airfoils tested provide significant advantages over the conventional NACA 0012 profile. In general, however, the parameters of the unsteady motion appear to be more important than airfoil shape in determining the dynamic-stall airloads.
