Book excerpt: Gas compressors are mechanical devices used for raising the pressure of gas or vapour either by lowering its volume (as in the case of positive displacement machines) or by imparting to it a high kinetic energy which is converted into pressure in a diffuser (as in the case of centrifugal machines). The classification and use of compressors are described in the next section The selection of compressors for different applications is a crucial issue in the process industry. It is usually the most expensive piece of equipment and has dominant influence on cycle efficiency. The common types of compressors used in industry are reciprocating, twin screw, single screw, centrifugal, scroll and rotary vane. Compressor manufacturers are used to having a large market potential. Probably all types of compressors can be improved over what is available in the market today; but the potential return must justify the expense of research and development to achieve the improvement The twin screw compres ...

Book excerpt: The screw compressor is a rotary positive displacement compressor, capable of compressing gas, vapors, and refrigerants. It is commonly used in various applications, including building and architecture, food, chemical process, pharmaceutical, metallurgical industries, refrigeration, air conditioning, vehicle superchargers and in cryogenic helium compression applications. The main characteristics that make the screw compressor attractive include high rotational speed, compactness, ability to maintain high efficiency over a wide range of operating conditions, long service life, and good reliability. An oil-flooded twin screw compressor is selected for investigation in the present work due to its reliability, large capacity, and capability to handle helium's high heat of compression. Oil-flooded screw compressors refers to the oil being injected into the compression process and mixed with helium. The benefits of injected oil are cooling the helium, creating sealing between rotors, lubrication, and higher performance. In helium systems, the loss of power within the compression system is roughly two-thirds. With such a high loss in power, it is imperative to understand the need for investigating the design and thermodynamic parameters that impact the overall performance of these machines.Initially, a review of different types of compressors is carried out to determine the best suited compressor for helium compression in this current work. A numerical model was created to simulate the compression process of the screw compressor. The model consists of three segments: rotor curve generation, thermodynamic analysis, and performance prediction. The geometric data are a necessary input for the thermodynamic analysis; however, the thermodynamic analysis segment can be used for any rotor geometry. The thermodynamic analysis outputs the thermodynamic parameters as a function of the male rotation angle of helium and oil. The performance prediction determines characteristics of performance such as the volumetric and isothermal efficiencies. The model was validated using a commercial software, which was developed on the basis of extensive screw compressor data. The model predicted performance with reasonable accuracy varying at extreme case with a maximum of a 13\\% difference. Using the numerical model, the oil analysis in this thesis determined that the compressor performance is highly dependent on oil injection parameters. The isothermal efficiency spanned from 49.9\\% to 56.5\\% when adjusting the mass flow rate and oil injection position of the oil. Experimental results determined that the discharge temperature has the biggest impact on compressor performance.

Book excerpt: Helical twin screw compressors are being increasingly used in the oil and gas process industry and for refrigeration and air conditioning duties. This machine is capable of high reliability. To achieve it both thermodynamic efficiency and rotor forces must be taken into consideration at the design stage. In this study, a computer program for analysing the forces in a twin screw compressor has been developed. It takes into account all significant factors and includes a rotor profile generation program and a geometrical characteristics calculation program. The programs developed have been integrated with an existing performance simulation program and used to investigate several design aspects of a refrigeration twin screw compressor and an unusual refrigeration system design. A comprehensive examination of lobe tip designs suggests that lobe tip design parameters must be optimised if minimum power consumption is to be achieved and the use of a sealing strip gives an advantage. A parameter study for optimum rotor geometrical parameter combinations has shown that the 4+5 and 5+6 combinations have in general high efficiencies, but less rigidity, while the 5+7 and 4+6 combinations give the opposite results. The highest wrap angle and length/diameter ratio do not always lead to the highest compressor performance. A comprehensive examination of the influence of the slide valve on compressor performance and bearing forces has been conducted. Procedures for determining the optimum slide stop and volume ratios are presented. The detrimental effect of the non-return valve in a refrigeration system driven by a twin screw compressor has been examined. A non-reversing clutch fitted to the prime mover is an alternative, but must be designed according to the shut down torque which is higher than the normal running torque. This is demonstrated. An analytical model for axial-torsional coupled vibration in an Oil-injected twin screw compressor has been created. A frequency analysis of all the excitations has been conducted by using an FFT technique. It is found that the fundamental harmonic dominates the gas torque, while the first two harmonics dominate the axial forces.

Book excerpt: Althoughtheprinciplesofoperationofhelicalscrewmachines, ascompressors or expanders, have been well known for more than 100 years, it is only during the past 30 years that these machines have become widely used. The main reasons for the long period before they were adopted were their relatively poor e?ciency and the high cost of manufacturing their rotors. Two main developments led to a solution to these di?culties. The ?rst of these was the introduction of the asymmetric rotor pro?le in 1973. This reduced the bl- hole area, which was the main source of internal leakage by approximately 90%, and thereby raised the thermodynamic e?ciency of these machines, to roughly the same level as that of traditional reciprocating compressors. The second was the introduction of precise thread milling machine tools at - proximately the same time. This made it possible to manufacture items of complex shape, such as the rotors, both accurately and cheaply. From then on, as a result of their ever improving e?ciencies, high rel- bility and compact form, screw compressors have taken an increasing share of the compressor market, especially in the ?elds of compressed air production, and refrigeration and air conditioning, and today, a substantial proportion of compressors manufactured for industry are of this type. Despite, the now wide usage of screw compressors and the publication of many scienti?c papers on their development, only a handful of textbooks have been published to date, which give a rigorous exposition of the principles of their operation and none of these are in English.

Book excerpt: For operation of industrial air compressors, conventional wisdom dictates that breathing outside air, which has lower temperature, will reduce the air compressor power consumption. In addition, many energy professionals and reliable sources (Parekh, 2000; Kaya et al., 2002; U.S Department of Energy, 2004; Hick, 2006) advocate the use of cooler air to reduce compressor power consumption. However, experimental results are not available to support the conventional wisdom. The purpose of this thesis is to experimentally investigate the effect of inlet air temperature on an oil-flooded rotary screw compressor located in the University of Alabama. This experiment is set up in a controlled environment. More specifically, a data acquisition system with digitally controlled fluids is developed to control the air demand imposed on the compressor. A range of inlet air temperatures are investigated based on local weather conditions. The injected oil temperature can be modified slightly by restricting the air flow through the air cooler. A design of experiments technique is utilized to evaluate the influence of inlet air temperature, inlet oil temperature, and air flow rate on the compressor power. The results show that inlet air temperature has little or no contribution to the compressor power. Moreover, the collected data shows that power consumption does not vary with inlet oil temperature. The results also show that as the inlet air temperature increases, the isentropic efficiency increases.
