Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Researches Applied to Physiology and Pathology Although there are some facts which appear strongly to prove that the vital property of the muscular tissue is independent Of the nervous system, many physiologists persist in their opposi tion to Haller's doctrine on this subject. Therefore I have thought necessary to add new proofs to those already known, and I have published many experiments, of which I shall relate here only two of the most decisive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiology and Pathology of the Cerebral Circulation: An Experimental Research In the following pages will be found the substance of three Lectures which I delivered as Hunterian Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons in February last. I have largely been enabled to carry out the researches of the past five years therein detailed, through the munificence of the Worshipful Company of Grocers. This volume contains a report of the work done by me as their Research Scholar. In writinof some of the sections of this work I have drawn on papers previously published by me in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, the Journal of Physiology, and the British Medical Journal; other sections, such as those on the Cerebral Pulsation, the Cerebro-spinal Fluid, Cerebral Anaemia, and Cerebral Compression are new, and contain an account of experiments hitherto unpublished. I have been partly supplied with the means of research by grants from the Royal Society Government Grant, and the British Medical Association; and I owe a debt of gratitude to Professor Burdon Sanderson, Professor Schafer and the Authorities of the London Hospital Medical College, whose laboratories and laboratory appliances have been placed at my disposal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Experimental Physiology for Students of Medicine This method of presenting the experimental sciences - chemistry, physics, and the biological sciences, including physiology, psychology, pharmacology, and pathology - is an expensive one, both as to the time and the money involved in it; but from the standpoint of pedagogy it is more economical than the text-book method, because it leads directly and surely to definite results. In answer to the question as to just what these results are which follow the modern laboratory method of instruction, it may be stated first of all that it cultivates in the student the capacity of close and accurate Observation; it affords an opportunity for valuable practice in the systematic recording of the Observations; it develops the power of logical thought in drawing tenable conclusions from the observed data; and, in the formulation of conclusions, it stimulates the ability to express the thoughts in concise and unambiguous terms. In the second place, practice of this kind makes the student independent and furnishes him with just the mental equipment needed for later life in whatever line his activities may be directed. If such an education is more important for one profession than another, the medical profession is certainly the one in which its importance is greatest. The physics, chemistry, and biology studied in preparation for medicine, and the physiology, pharmacology, and pathology of the medical course should give the student a most admirable equipment for dealing with the complex problems of clinical practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Physiology in Surgical and General Practice The last edition was published just before the war. Needless to say we have learned a great deal in the past five years. Research in pure physiology and its applications to the clinical sciences has fallen principally into the hands of the Americans, whilst the British investigators have devoted themselves especially to problems arising out of the material presented by the wounded in the war. The results of study, observation, and experiment along both these lines are here gathered together. Much of the book is new, but the objects and scope remain as in the preface to the original edition. To make way for additional material considerable sections have been deleted altogether. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimentation on Animals, as a Means of Knowledge in Physiology, Pathology, and Practical Medicine Have sometimes been made in extremely violent and denunciatory language, calculated rather to excite the feelings than to give any intelligent or impartial expression of the truth. It has even been declared, by one of the most active agitators in this field, that even though these living dissec tions were productive of all that their advocates claim for them, mankind have no right to the knowledge thus acquired and demands have been made, from the same quarter, for legislation which should put a stop to these wicked contri butions to human knowledge, which mankind would be all the better off for never It is evident, therefore, that the aggressive move ment against experimental investigation is both unreasoning and persistent. It is liable at any time to resume its activity, and to endanger, both in the State of New York and elsewhere, the progress and improvement of physiological medi cine. For' these reasons it has been thought de sirable to present in a condensed form the most important facts in regard to the character, the necessity, and the results of experimentation upon animals for scientific purposes, together with the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology and Pathology of the Semicircular Canals: Being an Excerpt of the Clinical Studies of Dr. Robert Barany With Notes and Addenda Gathered From the Vienna Clinics Since the publication by Ewald and Hoegyes of their epoch making experiments on the semi circular canals oi animals and the discovery of the underlying laws of labyrinthine physiology, extensive researches have been conducted at the clinics of Vienna and Berlin on the human laby rinth. While the latter have been but supple mental to the classical work of the above named pioneers, they have served to reduce the subject to a practical basis and to evolve a new and valu able method of diagnosis of conditions hitherto obscure. Nystagmus, which has until recent years, been associated almost entirely with con genital or early acquired optical defects, or in an indefinite way, with lesions of the inner ear, has become one of the most important aids in differ ential diagnosis and greatly amplified the scope and efficiency of the aurist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adult vertebrate central nervous system mainly consists of neurons, astrocytes, microglia cells, and oligodendrocytes. Oligodendrocytes, the myelin-forming cells of the CNS, are subjected to cell stress and subsequent death in a number of metabolic or inflammatory disorders, among which multiple sclerosis (MS) is included. This disease is associated with the development of large demyelinated plaques, oligodendrocyte destruction, and axonal degeneration, paralleled by the activation of astrocytes and microglia as well as the recruitment of peripheral immune cells to the site of tissue injury. Of note, viable oligodendrocytes and an intact myelin sheath are indispensable for neuronal health. For example, it has been shown that oligodendrocytes provide nutritional support to neurons, fast axonal transport depends on proper oligodendrocyte function, and mice deficient in mature myelin proteins eventually display severe neurodegeneration. This Special Issue contains a collection of highly relevant primary research articles as well as review articles focusing on the development, physiology, and pathology of the oligodendrocyte–axon–myelin unit.
