For a typical highway application, these composite bridges are constructed with a cast-in-place concrete deck; however, some composite bridge designs utilize precast concrete deck panels. For example, bridges built on temporary access roads which service resource industries throughout Western Canada often employ composite bridges that consist of steel plate girders and precast concrete deck panels. For spans between 18- to 36 metres, permanent bridges currently present the best economy; although, portable structures would be preferred on these temporary roads so that the bridge could be relocated after the road is decommissioned. This study proposes a shear connection between steel plate girders and precast concrete deck panels, which allows fastening, and unfastening, of these two components enabling a portable composite bridge. In total, ten connection concepts were developed during this study and a multi-criteria assessment was performed to evaluate each concept respectively. Based on the outcome of this multi-criteria assessment, and subsequent sensitivity analysis, a preferred connection was established and a finite element model was developed for the analysis of composite bridge girders. For the initial development of the finite element model, the test set up and experimental findings of a test program by other researchers was employed so that the finite element analysis results could be compared to those reported from a physical experiment. Following this initial finite element analysis, full scale composite bridge girders were modelled so that the influence of the proposed shear connection on the behaviour of a composite girder could be studied. The model was verified for its ability to capture the possible effects of flange buckling, web buckling, and lateral torsional buckling of the steel plate girder. It was then confirmed that these local responses do not influence the performance of the proposed portable composite bridge system. A parametric study was also performed in which the effect of shear connection stiffness and spacing on the behaviour of the composite girder was investigated. This parametric study allowed the sensitivity of the proposed connection to variations in these two parameters to be assessed and also allowed preliminary study of the performance of composite girders with alternative shear connection designs.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this research is to develop procedures/criteria for designing HSS-formed shear pockets with clustered shear connectors for full-depth precast concrete deck systems. These procedures/criteria will assist in sizing shear connectors, selecting shear pocket dimensions and HSS thickness, and determining pocket anchorage and reinforcement necessary to maximize the connection capacity while allowing adequate construction tolerance. Experimental investigation (push-off testing) and finite element analysis (FEA) were performed to validate the developed design procedures/criteria. Analysis and testing results validated the adequacy of the developed design procedures/criteria for HSS-formed shear pocket connections. In addition, the results of 162 push-off tests conducted by the author and others obtained from the literature were used to check the feasibility of using current interface shear prediction models provided by AASHTO LRFD, fib MC 2010, Eurocode-2, and CSA-S6 design codes. Comparisons indicated that existing code provisions are applicable for predicting interface shear resistance of clustered shear connectors with different levels of accuracy.

Book excerpt: This research investigated the longitudinal shear transfer mechanism in composite shallow cellular floor beams. The shear transfer mechanism is different with the headed shear studs used in composite construction. The shear resisting properties and behaviour of the shear transfer mechanism has not been studied previously. Experimental and analytical studies were carried out with the aims of improving and optimizing the design details, and advancing the method of shear connection in shallow floor beam construction. The composite shallow cellular floor beam investigated in this research is a new type of beam fabricated by welding two highly asymmetric cellular tees along the web. The shear connections of this type of composite beam are formed by the web openings, which transfer longitudinal shear force. Four types of these shear connections were studied: concrete-infill-only, tie-bar, ducting and web-welded-stud shear connections. In total, 24 push-out tests were performed in two test series to investigate the load-slip behaviour and shear resistance of the shear connections under direct shear force. The failure mechanisms of the two forms of shear connections were extensively studied, which lead to the development of a design method for the composite action. The concrete infill element passing through the web opening is subject to a complex three-dimensional stress state, and it is difficult to analyse it using the mathematical model rather than empirical formula. Finite Element Analysis of the concrete-infill-only shear connection was performed with a parametric study to further verify the design method that has been developed. Two flexural tests were carried out on a full-scale composite shallow cellular floor beam with a solid slab. The shear connections investigated in the flexural tests were: concrete-infill-only and tie-bar shear connections passed through the web. The behaviour and performance of the shear connections in the flexural tests were compared with those in the push-out tests. The degree of shear connection of the two flexural tests was determined in the back analysis using plastic theory with measured material properties. Based on the findings of the push-out tests and flexural tests, two design methods of deflection check and moment resistance were developed for composite shallow cellular floor beams at the serviceability limit state and the ultimate limit state respectively. The deflection check design method is based on the uncracked section properties of the composite beam. The moment resistance design method developed in this thesis is compatible with the design methods of BS5950 and Eurocode 4 (EC4).

Book excerpt: One of the most common types of highway bridges in current use is the I-beam bridge, which consists of several steel I-beams supporting a reinforced concrete floor slab cast on top of the beams. The concrete slab may either rest freely on the beams or may be connected to their top flanges. Both types of bridges, called noncomposite and composite respectively, have been the subject of extensive theoretical and experimental investigations at the University of Illinois. In the scale-model composite bridges, tested at the University of Illinois, the slab was connected to the beams by means of channel shear connectors made of short pieces of steel channel welded to the top flanges of the I-beams and embedded in the slab. As a result of these investigations it was considered desirable to investigate further the behavior of both composite beams and shear connectors themselves.

In the case of steel-concrete composite bridges, the shear connection between the concrete deck and the steel girders is a vital element of the bridge system, and has significant impacts on construction time, cost, structural integrity, and durability. The general performance of the shear connectors in these bridges is becoming an increasingly important issue, as existing bridges are used past their intended design lives, and new bridges are being designed with accelerated construction and longer service lives in mind. Welded shear studs are the standard method of shear connection in composite bridge construction, either cast-in-place or concentrated in grouted “shear pockets” in the case of steel-precast applications. The primary disadvantage of using welded shear studs in structures subjected to repeated loading is that they are believed to perform poorly from a fatigue perspective. As a result, design standards in North America require most bridges to have more than double the number of studs needed for ultimate strength purposes. This leads to construction challenges including arduous deck reinforcement placing, and it reduces the economy gained through steel-precast construction by requiring excessive numbers of shear pockets. It is possible that an enhanced understanding of the performance of welded shear studs in composite beams, including system effects, may allow for relaxed design provisions. High strength bolt shear connectors may be a viable alternative to shear studs in some cases, providing greater fatigue resistance due to the absence of welds, and having a higher material strength than conventional welded studs. The work presented herein is aimed at increasing the state-of-understanding of the fatigue behaviour and reliability of welded shear studs in both cast-in-place and precast concrete composite bridge applications, while also presenting the benefits and drawbacks of two alternative high strength bolt shear connection concepts. A laboratory research program carried out at the University of Waterloo featured the testing of eighteen large-scale beam specimens over a period of two years. In addition to the laboratory work completed by the research team, the author used finite element and reliability analysis methods to augment the test results and extend their applicability to full-scale medium span highway bridges. Over sixty stud fatigue failures and four bolt fatigue failures were observed over the course of this study, greatly adding to a dearth of existing test results, and allowing the construction of a statistically meaningful fatigue design curve of the stud detail from beam tests for the first time. System effects of multiple stud failures were studied in a finite element model of a typical highway bridge girder and revealed that the current design rules are overly conservative for all bridge classes in the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, and for all bridge configurations except for short spans. The results support the proposed new fatigue category dedicated to welded shear studs, recognizing the unique redundant and uninspectable nature of the detail, and suggest a fatigue endurance limit of 36 MPa (one and a half times the current limit). It is proposed that the embedded high strength bolt detail be viewed as a viable alternative to studs, given greatly increased fatigue performance and exceptional ease of deconstruction. The benefits of such a connection would be particularly useful in combination with precast deck panels.

Every fibre of my being, every precept of my home training protested against and would not permit my begging. I saw persons all about me spending money for trifles, or luxuries. I envied the ragged street urchin as he took a nickel in exchange for a newspaper and ran expectantly to the next pedestrian. But I was broke and utterly miserable.Have you ever been broke? Have you ever been hungry and miserable, not knowing when or where you were going to get your next meal, nor where you were going to spend your next night?Have you ever tramped holes in your shoes in a tiresome, discouraging effort to get work, meeting rebuff and insults in return for your earnestness and sincerity, and encountering an utter lack of an understanding of your crying necessity in those with whom you have pleaded for a chance?Have you ever felt as though the world itself were against you and that a mistake had been made by Nature in inflicting you with life?If you have not felt each and all of these things it will, perhaps, be futile for you to read what they brought to one who has felt them, and it will be difficult for you to tolerate any thought of extenuation for what happened. Thousands of persons have felt these thoughts, have suffered these experiences, but very few have done what I did; at all events, very few have done what I did and then told about it, as I am going to tell.Few crimes are committed from choice. The number of professional criminals is small, amazingly small, in comparison with the number who are criminals of circumstance. But society makes no distinction; the man who steals because he is hungry, and too proud or squeamish to beg, is classed with the thug who waylays you at night and takes your money by persuasion of an ugly .44-caliber "smoke-wagon" held within an inch of your brain, and with money jingling in his own pocket at the moment. The first is an unfortunate human being driven to commit an act which he abhors; the second a dangerous menace to humankind and organized society. I belonged to the unprofessional class. And despite a long term in prison, I am not yet a criminal. Every atom of my body, each vibration of my mind, revolts at the thought of crime. Yet I committed burglary; also I have a big, warm tolerance for other men who have committed burglary, or other crimes, no matter who they may be. Do not mistake me-I am not seeking to apotheosize the offender against the law; far from it. But I know that all men are human-even the men in convict stripes and shaven heads. Why shouldn't I know? Haven't I been one of them?Didn't I violate the sacredness of a home in the dead of night, and didn't I spend long years in the penitentiary?Who knows if I don't? As I look back I wonder what has been accomplished by my imprisonment. Perhaps before this series of sketches is done some of you may discover what has been accomplished in my individual case. But what is being accomplished in the thousands of other and more unconscionable cases? Perhaps you do not care; possibly you may feel that it is none of your concern; that you pay taxes for protection, and that you cannot be held accountable for the shortcomings of others or for the inhuman and illogical system that enhances the certainty of still greater violation of man-made laws.Be that as it may, you are still responsible; and you are not protected. I was broke and utterly miserable. True, there were thousands of others just as miserable-I realized that -but I was myself, I was no one else save myself, and I had a nickel with a hole in it in my pocket. Never mutilate a coin of the realm. It may fall into the hands of a starving man or woman and prove the last argument in favor of crime-or suicide. It was nearing midnight and the possibility of escaping another night in the streets growing slimmer with each passing moment. Somehow I felt that something....

Book excerpt: Precast bridge deck panels can be used in place of a cast-in-place concrete deck to reduce bridge closure times for deck replacements or new bridge construction. The panels are prefabricated at a precasting plant providing optimal casting and curing conditions, which should result in highly durable decks. Precast panels can be either full-depth or partial-depth. Partial-depth panels act as a stay-in-place form for a cast-in-place concrete topping. This study investigated only the behavior of full-depth precast panels. The research described in this report had two primary objectives. The first was to develop a performance specification for the grout that fills the haunch between the top of the beam and the bottom of the deck panel, as well as the horizontal shear connector pockets and the panel-to-panel joints. Tests were performed using standard or modified ASTM tests to determine basic material properties on eight types of grout. The grouts were also used in tests that approximated the conditions in a deck panel system. Based on these tests, requirements for shrinkage, compressive strength, and flow were established for the grouts. It was more difficult to establish a test method and an acceptable performance level for adhesion, an important property for the strength and durability of the deck panel system. The second objective was to quantify the horizontal shear strength of the connection between the deck panel and the beam prestressed concrete beams. This portion of the research also investigated innovative methods of creating the connection. Push-off tests were conducted using several types of grout and a variety of connections. These tests were used to develop equations for the horizontal shear strength of the details. Two promising alternate connections, the hidden pocket detail and the shear stud detail, were tested for constructibility and strength. The final outcome of this study a set of recommendations for the design, detailing, and construction of the connection between full-depth precast deck panels and prestressed concrete I-beams. If designed and constructed properly, the deck panel system is an excellent option when rapid bridge deck construction or replacement is required.

Book excerpt: In recent years, bridge engineers and researchers are increasingly turning to the finite element method for the design of Steel and Steel-Concrete Composite Bridges. However, the complexity of the method has made the transition slow. Based on twenty years of experience, Finite Element Analysis and Design of Steel and Steel-Concrete Composite Bridges provides structural engineers and researchers with detailed modeling techniques for creating robust design models. The book’s seven chapters begin with an overview of the various forms of modern steel and steel–concrete composite bridges as well as current design codes. This is followed by self-contained chapters concerning: nonlinear material behavior of the bridge components, applied loads and stability of steel and steel–concrete composite bridges, and design of steel and steel–concrete composite bridge components.
