Abstract: Previous research has been interested in studying parental emotion socialization practices in parents of typically developing (TD) children. The current study aimed to explore such practices among parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).Seventy-eight families participated in this study. Self-reported rating scales were adopted to measure the child's social competence, parenting stress and maternal emotional styles. As hypothesized, results showed significantly different patterns in maternal emotional styles between mothers of children with ASD and those with TD children. However, inconsistent to our hypothesis, the maternal emotional styles were found to be neither related to child's social competence nor parenting stress within the ASD group. Implications of findings on future research and practice are discussed. However, in families where one child has an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis, the dynamics between family members may be different due to the associated deficits in communication. Therefore, the purpose of this mixed method study was to explore the perceptions of six typically developing children with a sibling with autism and their parents. Semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were used for both parents and the typically developing child, which allowed for an in-depth investigation into the sibling relationship. Identification of major themes followed by focused coding was conducted in order to capture the essence of what was said and to categorize the most frequent themes. Overall, both parents and typically developing children had positive and negative things to say about the relationship. Additionally, typically developing children seem to be at a loss for coping strategies that they consider helpful, perhaps due to their own poor emotional regulation skills. This study emphasizes the need to support typically developing children and their development, as well as parents. Parents also identified other themes beyond the sibling relationship such as the perceived poor quality of public services received, the school experience, and their reactions towards the diagnosis.

ASD-sibs were compared to children of typically developing siblings (TD-sibs) in the Face-to-Face/Still-Face (FFSF) at 6 months and the Early Social Communication Scales (ESCS) at 8, 10, 12, 15, and 18 months. ASD-sibs exhibited non-significant trends to smile less and display more neutral affect than TD-sibs during the FFSF. There was a significant status by gender interaction such that male ASD-sibs showed less smiling and lower affective valence compared to male TD-sibs. Additionally, ASD-sibs showed a lack of emotional continuity in the FFSF. ASD-sibs displayed less initiating joint attention, initiating behavioral requesting, and responding to joint attention over time than TD-sibs. Results are discussed with respect to the social orienting model of autism.

Parenting style and parental stress are two factors that impact a caregiver's ability to effectively foster positive relationships. Finally, the interplay between sibling relationships, caregiver characteristics, sibling involvement in intervention, and success in ASD intervention is of interest. Primary caregivers (N = 108) completed an online questionnaire and a hierarchical multiple regression was conducted. Results indicated: 1) Parenting stress explains 12% of the variance found in the warmth and closeness of sibling relationships; 2) Sibling involvement and success in ASD intervention cumulatively contributes to 13.5% of the variance found in the warmth and closeness of sibling relationships; and 3) warmth and closeness uniquely explains 7% of the variance of success in ASD intervention. Limitations, practical implications, and future research direction will be discussed.

Thus, it behooves researchers to consider child and parent characteristics, as well as parent-child dynamics, which might lead to more or less optimal developmental trajectories. This dissertation used a transactional approach to study synchrony during early childhood. In this collection of studies, synchrony is defined as the degree to which a parent’s nonverbal and verbal communication follows or redirects their child’s focus of attention and action during play (Siller & Sigman, 2002). Parent-child dyads engaged in an unstructured free play session with a standardized set of toys, which was later coded for Synchrony (Siller & Sigman, 2002, 2008). 1) The first study included typically developing toddlers and their mothers. It tested associations between synchrony and the Emotional Availability (EA) Scales (Biringen, 2008), and also explored associations between synchrony, EA, child temperament, and toddlers’ joint attention abilities. 2) The second study included mothers and typically developing infants. It longitudinally explored the stability of synchrony from 9 to 18 months and whether synchrony predicted individual differences in the development of joint attention from 9 to 18 months and language at 24 months. 3) The third study included mothers and infants with an older sibling with autism (sibs-ASD) or without autism (sibs-TD). It assessed whether certain parent and child characteristics (e.g., parenting stress, infant temperament) contribute to individual differences in synchrony at 12 and 15 months. This body of work helps to: establish the stability of synchrony in early childhood, distinguish synchrony and EA parent-child interaction measures, clarify how synchrony is related to the development of nonverbal and verbal communication, and identify certain parent and child factors that predict individual differences in synchrony.
