Book excerpt: Debido a la digitalización que se está viviendo actualmente, fuentes de información como libros, revistas o folletos físicos, entre otros, están perdiendo importancia y cada vez son menos utilizados para realizar consultas sobre el destino turístico al que se quiere visitar. Por ello, el presente Trabajo de Fin de Grado se centra en investigar una de estas fuentes, los folletos físicos, comparando a través de ellos, la imagen percibida e inducida tanto de los residentes como de los turistas de la ciudad de León, como destino turístico cultural y gastronómico. Se han consultado tanto fuentes de información secundarias, para realizar el marco teórico, como fuentes de información primaria, a fin de obtener datos que den respuesta al objetivo general. Las técnicas empleadas para su análisis han sido un pre-test, seguido de un experimento mediante eye-tracking y, por último, un post-test. Respecto a la imagen percibida se ha podido observar, que tanto turistas como residentes, comparten una percepción muy similar sobre esta ciudad ya que asocian a ella indicadores como: ambiente, calidad de vida y clima frío. En relación a la imagen inducida, las diferencias entre ambos públicos objetivo son más apreciables, ya que por una parte los turistas focalizaron más su interés en las imágenes de los folletos y, los residentes, lo hicieron más en el texto que éstos presentaban. Esto puede deberse a qu elos residentes conocen la imagen de los recursos culturales y gastronómicos de Leó n,dada su proximidad y, sin embargo, les interesa aprender más sobre ellos. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo principal profundizar en los conceptos anteriormente señalados así como analizar la situación de León como destino turístico inteligente desde una triple perspectiva: Administración pública local, residentes y turistas. Para ello se llevan a cabo entrevistas estructuradas a diferentes cargos del Ayuntamiento de León, con el fin de conocer los proyectos que se están ejecutando en este ámbito y una encuesta personal a residentes y visitantes con el objetivo de analizar su percepción a este respecto. Or is it a smokescreen that hides the vestiges of ethnocentric ideologies, which ultimately create a hegemonic relationship? This book takes a critical look at revival exercises of special historical and geopolitical significance, and argues that a critical and cautious approach to revival movements is necessary. The cases of Sinhala, Kazakh, Mongolian, Catalan, and even Hong Kong Cantonese show that it is not through linguistic revival, but rather through political representation and economic development, that the peoples in question achieve competitiveness and equality amongst their neighbors. On the other hand, linguistic revival in these and other contexts can, and has been, used to support nationalist or ethnocentric agendas, to the detriment of other groups, recreating the same dynamics that generated the argument for revival in the first place. This book argues that respect for linguistic and other diversity, multilingualism and multiculturalism, is not compatible with linguistic revival that mirrors nation-building and essentializing identity construction.

Book excerpt: What does the music of Madagascar or Trinidad tell us about the islands themselves and their inhabitants? Is there something unique about island musics? How does island music differ from its mainland counterparts? Drawing on a range of diverse examples from around the globe, this book examines the culture of island music and offers insight into local identities. Case studies look at how music, tradition, popular culture and islander life are linked in modern maritime societies. The islands covered include Crete, Ibiza, Zanzibar, Trinidad, Cuba, Madagascar and Papua New Guinea. In revealing the current practice behind modern island musics, the book considers the role of world music, exotica, global tourism, novels and travel writing in constructing fanciful images of islanders and island life. Island Musics throws into question some of our most basic notions and assumptions about island societies. There are a number of problems common to all island societies that vary in significance depending on an islands size, demographics and its proximity to the mainland. Problems include remoteness and insularity, peripherality to centralized sites of decision-making, a limited range of natural resources, specialization of economics, small markets, a narrow skills base, poor infrastructure and environmental fragility. These issues are discussed in relation to the creation of music in the construction of an islander identity. Of particular interest is the way in which islanders discuss their music and how it articulates the idea of the other and diaspora. Finally, Island Musics considers the musical industry, music education and the preservation of musical cultural heritage.
