Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative, transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of middle school teachers in the United States implementing the flipped classroom model (FCM) when students are not coming to class prepared. The FCM is a framework in which students engage in passive learning activities at home by watching videos uploaded by their teachers so that they can engage in active learning activities in the classroom. The theory guiding this study is Vygotsky’s social-constructivism theory as it promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills through collaboration, which are very important skills required of today’s 21st century learners. The following questions were researched in this study: (a) What are the experiences of middle school teachers in the United States implementing the FCM with student completion of homework?, (b) What are the experiences of middle school teachers in the United States implementing the FCM with student engagement in the active learning process when homework has not been completed?, and (c) What are the experiences of middle school teachers in the United States implementing the FCM with social collaboration among students during the learning process when homework has not been completed? Data collection included interviews, document analysis, and letter writing from 10 participants who have used the FCM for at least two years. Participants were selected from a flipped learning site on social media by completing a questionnaire. Data analysis included epoché, phenomenological reduction, and imaginative variation and then synthesized to determine the essence of the lived experience of the participants. Three themes that emerged from the data analysis were: homework completion improved and builds confidence, noncompletion of homework leads to delayed engagement, and noncompletion of homework causes insufficient collaboration within the classroom. Two outliers were identified in the area of homework completion

The purpose of this study was to analyze the experiences of both teachers and supervisors on the implementation of the flipped classroom method within the New York City public school system. The studyreviews specific teacher practices on their use of technology to appeal to students different learning styles and interests, and te supports they provide to students to increase the level of understanding within the content area. The study also reviews the role of supervisors in supporting teachers using the flipped classroom method, and its impact on overall teacher pedagogy and student engagement. The study analyzes how the implementation of the flipped classroom method depicts a change in how teachers teach, how students learn, methods that teachers use to assess student learning, and the support that teachers and supervisors provide to each other to ensure the success of the instructional strategy. Sixteen participants were interviewed which included ten teachers, four assistant principals, and two principals in Title 1 and non-Title 1 schools in New York City. The findings of the study show that 100% of the teacher participants required technology support at school and at home for the flipped classroom method to be successful. 100% of the supervisors referenced technical and non-technical support for teachers. All supervisors observed a change in the overall learning environment for both students and teachers. This study also found how implementing the instructional strategy increased the overall level of engagement for both students and parents. A correlation between the Danielson Framework for Teaching and the principals of the flipped classroom method is also mentioned as a finding of the study, depicting a change in the observation ratings for teachers who implemented the flipped classroom method.

The flipped classroom is defined by the Flipped Learning Network (2014) as an instructional method that moves direct instruction outside of the classroom in order to make room in the classroom for a more interactive learning environment where students can actively engage in the content. The flipped classroom strategy theoretically allows teachers the time to develop mathematical ideas and the ability to facilitate that development. For the Common Core State Standards initiative to be effective, teachers need to engage students in new learning experiences that support college and career readiness. By implementing a technology based instructional approach, like the flipped classroom strategy, teachers are able to blend twenty-first century skills with the development of the essential habits of mind of mathematically proficient students (Brunsell & Horejsi, 2013). This study seeks to understand how the flipped method of classroom instruction can lead to improved student achievement in mathematics courses and improve student perceptions about math in order to encourage course consumption in the future (Zollman, 2011). A modified explanatory sequential mixed methods design was used, and it involved collecting quantitative data and then explaining the quantitative results with in-depth qualitative data. In the quantitative phases of the study, NWEA Mathematics MAP Assessment data were collected from middle school students and course common final assessment scores were collected from middle school and high school students in a large Midwestern suburban school district to determine how student math achievement was impacted for students in a flipped classroom as compared to a traditionally instructed classroom. The frequency of active learning incidents was also collected during classroom observations. The qualitative phase was conducted as a follow up to the quantitative results to help explain the quantitative results. In this exploratory follow-up, student and teacher perceptions of mathematics achievement as a result of the flipped classroom approach to instruction with middle and high school math students and how those perceptions might be different than those of students and teachers in traditionally taught classrooms along with descriptions of observable active learning incidents in the school district were explored.
