Download or read book Germans as Minorities during the First World War written by Panikos Panayi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a global comparative perspective on the relationship between German minorities and the majority populations amongst which they found themselves during the First World War, this collection addresses how ’public opinion’ (the press, parliament and ordinary citizens) reacted towards Germans in their midst. The volume uses the experience of Germans to explore whether the War can be regarded as a turning point in the mistreatment of minorities, one that would lead to worse manifestations of racism, nationalism and xenophobia later in the twentieth century.

Book Synopsis The Prison Experience by : Pieter Spierenburg
Download or read book The Prison Experience written by Pieter Spierenburg and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the prison is central to the penal system of most modern nations, many believe that imprisonment did not become a major judicial sanction until the nineteenth century. In this readable history, Pieter Spierenburg traces the evolution of the prison during the early modern period and illustrates the important role it has played as both disciplinary institution and penal option from the late sixteenth century onward. Placing particular emphasis on the prisons of the Netherlands, Germany, and France, The Prison Experience examines not only the long-term nature of prisons and the historical conceptions of their prisoners but also looks at the daily lives of inmates—supplementing our understanding of social change and day-to-day life in early modern Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the day-to-day record of an American sociologist imprisoned for three years in a Japanese concentration camp in the seaport town of Bacolod, Negros Island, Philippines, this book deals with the relations between people in a situation of stress. An interracial group made up of many nationalities, varied economic statuses, religions, and professions gave Mrs. Vaughan ample material for her study. What is the basis of leadership in a crisis situation? What are the critical tensions? The patterns of survival and adjustment? What effect does previous cultural background have on reaction to calamity? These questions, among many others significant for social psychologists, psychiatrists, and all those concerned with human relationships, find answers here. Originally published in 1949. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Download or read book The War Behind the Wire written by John Lewis-Stempel and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last untold story of the First World War: the fortunes and fates of 170,000 British soldiers captured by the enemy. On capture, British officers and men were routinely told by the Germans 'For you the war is over'. Nothing could be further from the truth. British Prisoners of War merely exchanged one barbed-wire battleground for another. In the camps the war was eternal. There was the war against the German military, fought with everything from taunting humour to outright sabotage, with a literal spanner put in the works of the factories and salt mines prisoners were forced to slave in. British PoWs also fought a valiant war against the conditions in which they were mired. They battled starvation, disease, Prussian cruelties, boredom, and their own inner demons. And, of course, they escaped. Then escaped again. No less than 29 officers at Holzminden camp in 1918 burrowed their way out via a tunnel (dug with a chisel and trowel) in the Great Escape of the Great War. It was war with heart-breaking consequences: more than 12,000 PoWs died, many of them murdered, to be buried in shallow unmarked graves. Using contemporary records - from prisoners' diaries to letters home to poetry - John Lewis-Stempel reveals the death, life and, above all, the glory of Britain's warriors behind the wire. For it was in the PoW camps, far from the blasted trenches, that the true spirit of the Tommy was exemplified.
