Book Synopsis Carbon-Carbon ?-Bond Formation by : G. Pattenden
Download or read book Carbon-Carbon ?-Bond Formation written by G. Pattenden and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-09-08 with total page 1209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 3 covers carbon-to-carbon single bond forming reactions involving sp3, sp2 and sp carbon centers, but only those which do not involve additions to C-X &pgr;-bonds. The volume first compares and contrasts the alkylation reactions of all types of sp3 carbon nucleophiles and also covers vinyl and alkynyl carbanions. Following on from Volume 2, a separate section covers Friedel-Crafts alkylation reactions, which is complemented by discussions of polyene cyclizations and electrophilic transannular cyclizations in synthesis. Coupling reactions leading to &agr;-bond formation, and involving all types of combinations ofsp3, sp2 and sp carbon centers are next covered, including those reactions based on pinacol, acyloin and phenol oxidative coupling reactions, and also the Kolbe reaction. Rearrangement reactions, leading to carbon-to-carbon &agr;-bond formation, are often used in a clever manner in synthesis. The volume includes all those rearrangement reactions based on intermediate carbonium ions and carbanions, and also includes the benzil-benzilic acid and the Wolff rearrangements. The volume closes with coverage of carbonylation reactions, and the use of carbene insertion reactions into the C-H bond in synthesis.

Book Synopsis The Chemoselective Catalytic Oxidation of Alcohols, Diols, and Polyols to Ketones and Hydroxyketones by : Ronald Michael Painter
Download or read book The Chemoselective Catalytic Oxidation of Alcohols, Diols, and Polyols to Ketones and Hydroxyketones written by Ronald Michael Painter and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chemoselective oxidation of vicinal diols to α-hydroxyketones is a challenge in organic syntheses because not only does the diol need to be oxidized selectively to a monocarbonyl compound, but diols are also prone to overoxidation and oxidative cleavage. Employing a cationic palladium complex, [(neocuproine)Pd(OAc)]2(OTf)2, we were able to demonstrate the selective oxidation of glycerol to dihydroxyacetone mediated by either benzoquinone or O2 as the terminal oxidant, an accomplishment that has little precedent in homogeneous catalysis. Mechanistic studies were undertaken to uncover the nature of this remarkable chemoselectivity. Kinetic and deuterium-labeling studies implicate reversible β-hydride elimination from isomeric Pd alkoxides and turnover-limiting displacement of the dihydroxyacetone product by benzoquinone. We successfully extended this methodology to other terminal 1,2-diols and symmetric vicinal 1,2-diols and have carried out aerobic oxidation of these substrates catalyzed by 1. Examination of the reactivity of 1 with conformationally-restricted 1,2-cyclohexanediols suggests that the diol must chelate to the Pd center for effective oxidation to the hydroxyketone product. In a separate project, we have also investigated the electrocatalytic reduction of dioxygen by several dinuclear copper complexes, an important reaction for fuel cell applications.
Book Synopsis Applied Cross-Coupling Reactions by : Yasushi Nishihara
Download or read book Applied Cross-Coupling Reactions written by Yasushi Nishihara and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-14 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Applied Cross-Coupling Reactions” provides students and teachers of advanced organic chemistry with an overview of the history, mechanisms and applications of cross-coupling reactions. Since the discovery of the transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions in 1972, numerous synthetic uses and industrial applications have been developed. The mechanistic studies of the cross-coupling reactions have disclosed that three fundamental reactions: oxidative addition, transmetalation, and reductive elimination, are involved in a catalytic cycle. Cross-coupling reactions have allowed us to produce a variety of compounds for industrial purposes, such as natural products, pharmaceuticals, liquid crystals and conjugate polymers for use in electronic devices. Indeed, the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2010 was awarded for work on cross-coupling reactions. In this book, the recent trends in cross-coupling reactions are also introduced from the point of view of synthesis design and catalytic activities of transition-metal catalysts.
