Avonia is a medieval world similar to earth's eleventh and twelfth centuries. Many things are the same as our own past, but many things are much different. The powerful wizard Oberon discovers that the portal between the two worlds ceases to exist in the very near future. Oberon and Bill hurry back to Bill's old home to evacuate all the Locksley Longbowmen and their families on a harrowing escape to Avonia. The archers face new dangers in their fight for survival. Noble knights and evil warriors, powerful wizards, and a black-hearted sorceress and a magnificent dragon await Bill and his refugees on their exodus to Avonia.

Book excerpt: The Day of the Longbow is the tale of Bill Sherwood and his friends who encounter Oberon, a wise and powerful wizard from the parallel universe of Avonia. Avonia is a medieval world similar to earth’s eleventh and twelfth centuries. Many things are the same as our own past, but many are different. The bow and arrow were never invented in the Avonia universe. These are the adventures of Bill Sherwood and his fellow archers, sought out by Oberon to take their longbows to Avonia and help stave off the attacks from the savage Nordics. Bill and his men go back with Oberon to his medieval world to help King Stephen and the realm of Avonia fight the Nordic invasion. Theirs is not merely a fight to win but a battle for their survival. Knights of the realm, castles, magic, time travel, evil warriors, and true love...Bill and his band of archers will find it all in Avonia and be forever changed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1 Corinthians 5:5 is a curious passage which has been variously interpreted by scholars. For some, it denotes a magical curse which is designed to cause the physical death of the sinner. Others have found such an interpretation unpersuasive. Instead, they maintain that Paul's words at verse five are to be understood as a metaphor for exclusion from the Corinthian community. So, the errant Corinthian is not to die by a curse, but is to be excluded. This work argues for the former interpretation by marshalling a range of the most recent-specialised-magical material, which has not been considered by other works in relation to 1 Corinthians 5. It fully acknowledges the weaknesses of previous magical interpretations, and metaphorical approaches to the passage. Instead, it presents a fresh magical reading of not only 1 Corinthians 5:5, but the whole of 1 Corinthians 5-within its wider context of the apostle Paul's letter to the Corinthians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indo-Europeans, speakers of the prehistoric parent language from which most European and some Asiatic languages are descended, most probably lived on the Eurasian steppes some five or six thousand years ago. Martin West investigates their traditional mythologies, religions, and poetries, and points to elements of common heritage. In The East Face of Helicon (1997), West showed the extent to which Homeric and other early Greek poetry was influenced by Near Eastern traditions, mainly non-Indo-European. His new book presents a foil to that work by identifying elements of more ancient, Indo-European heritage in the Greek material. Topics covered include the status of poets and poetry in Indo-European societies; metre, style, and diction; gods and other supernatural beings, from Father Sky and Mother Earth to the Sun-god and his beautiful daughter, the Thunder-god and other elemental deities, and earthly orders such as Nymphs and Elves; the forms of hymns, prayers, and incantations; conceptions about the world, its origin, mankind, death, and fate; the ideology of fame and of immortalization through poetry; the typology of the king and the hero; the hero as warrior, and the conventions of battle narrative.
