Book excerpt: "The construction industry is a vibrant and active industry. The building sector is responsible for creating, modifying and improving the living environment of humanity. On the other hand, construction and buildings have considerable environmental impacts, consuming a significant proportion of limited resources of the planet including energy, raw material, water and land. Therefore, the sustainability of the built environment, the construction industry and the related activities is a pressing issue facing all stakeholders in order to promote Sustainable Development. The new millennium is challenging practitioners and researchers with the sustainability of the built environment and the construction industry. Hence, the main purpose of this publication is to discuss these challenges and present solutions that actively facilitate and promote the adoption of policies, methods and tools to accelerate the movement towards a global sustainable built environment. The issues presented include: Building sustainability assessment tools; Indoor environment quality and benchmarks; Sustainable resources and materials use; Use of non-conventional materials; Use of industrial waste; Eco-materials and technologies; Sustainable management of existing building stock; Innovative sustainable construction systems; and Design."
Book Synopsis The Fans Have Their Say #5 Metallica: Exit, Light, Enter, Night... by : Ian Carroll
Download or read book The Fans Have Their Say #5 Metallica: Exit, Light, Enter, Night... written by Ian Carroll and published by Fans Have Their Say. This book was released on 2019-03-09 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For me Rock Music was where it was 'at'. I grew up in Plymouth (in the UK) listening to KISS, Rainbow, Magnum, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Queen, Saxon, Judas Priest, Motörhead and the like - usually on a large 'ghetto blaster' in our local park or at our nearest railway station. And then it all changed when my friend bought the first album by a new American band and that band was Metallica. Neither of us had heard anything like it before, nor had most of the World... The music had the pure raw energy and speed of punk, added to the grinding riffs of heavy metal. The songs were unlike anything before and it wasn't long until the music was referred to in Kerrang! and Sounds as 'Thrash Metal' and Metallica were the leaders of the new movement, head and shoulders above the rest. It was a few later before I saw them live at Donington Monsters of Rock Festival in 1985, where they were squeezed onto a line-up between the classic British Prog Rock of Magnum and LA's new 'Bad Boys' Ratt. I didn't pay that much attention to them at the time, as I was otherwise occupied on a sunny day in the Midlands... A year later though, having listened to both 'Ride the Lightning' and 'Master of Puppets' I headed to London to see them at Hammersmith Odeon (as it was at the time) on their final UK date of the 'Damage Inc.' tour with Cliff Burton, who was killed in a coach accident in Sweden five days later. It was after catching them at this show that my love of the band grew. I saw all the other members of the 'Big Four' - Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth and many more thrash bands including Exodus, Flotsam and Jetsam, Kreator, Overkill, Testament, Metal Church - but none could match the talent and excitement of a new Metallica album or show. I have had the pleasure of seeing Metallica at Donington five times (both Monsters of Rock and Download Festivlas), four times at Reading Festival, two of their appearances at Sonisphere in the UK, the afore mentioned Hammersmith Odeon show and once at Wembley Stadium, the home of football and they never fail to entertain - if anything, the last time I saw them at Reading was probably one of the best times I've seen them. So now we come to this book, covering my thoughts on one of the greatest bands ever, along with the thoughts, memories and recollections from Metallica fans from all over the world!!! We're off to never-never land...
Book Synopsis Handbook on Synchrotron Radiation by : G.V. Marr
Download or read book Handbook on Synchrotron Radiation written by G.V. Marr and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 of this series concentrates on the use of synchrotron radiation which covers that region of the electromagnetic spectrum which extends from about 10eV to 3keV in photon energy and is essentially the region where the radiation is strongly absorbed by atmospheric gases. It therefore has to make extensive use of a high vacuum to transport the radiation to the workstation where the presence of hard X-rays can cause extensive damage to both the optics and the targets used in the experimental rigs. The topics chosen for this volume have been limited to the disciplines of physics and chemistry.

Written by one of the foremost authorities in the field, Principles of Colour and Appearance Measurement is a major two-volume work addressing the key topics required to understand the issues and manage colour effectively. The book addresses how objects appear to viewers, how viewers perceive colour, and the major types of instrumentation used to measure colour. Chapters detail the characteristics of light sources and object colour and appearance attributes. They encompass the complexities of human visual perception, including the various causes and types of colour blindness, and other unusual visual phenomena. The book also covers colour measurement instruments and methods, as well as fluorescence and whiteness. Principles of Colour Appearance and Measurement is a comprehensive resource for designers, colour technologists, colour quality inspectors, product developers, and anyone who uses colour in their work. Addresses the key topics required to understand the issues of colour measure and management Examines how viewers perceive colour and how objects appear to them Reviews the major types of instrumentation used to measure colour

Book Synopsis Gas Chromatography of Organometallic Compounds by : T. R. Crompton
Download or read book Gas Chromatography of Organometallic Compounds written by T. R. Crompton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its introduction into the armoury of the analytical chemist approximately two decades ago the technique of gas chroma tography has found very extensive applications in the analysis of most types of organic compounds. One of the few remaining limitations of the technique when applied to such compounds, namely the analysis of very highly boiling and or thermally unstable substances, has been overcome in many instances by the introduction of techniques such as silation for the conversion of sample components to lower boiling or more stable substances which can be gas chromatographed at reasonably low temperatures. All of this has been extensively dealt with in many books published during recent years dealing with the theory and practice of applying gas chromatography to the analysis and preparative separation of organic compounds. In parallel with these developments there has occurred, particu larly over the past decade, a growing interest in the application of gas chromatography to the analysis of organometallic compounds. Indeed, for many types of organometallic compounds, gas chromatography is the analytical method of choice particularly, as so often happens, when the sample is a mixture. To the author's knowledge no complete review exists of the published work in this very interesting new field; a situation it is hoped the present volume will rectify.
