Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Functional Exercise Prescription, Eyal Lederman presents a revolutionary new approach for exercise prescription that uses the individual's own movement repertoire. The book demonstrates how daily activities (the life gym) can be amplified to provide the necessary movement challenges to support movement rehabilitation in many musculoskeletal and pain conditions. Hence, all activities can become remedial without the need to prescribe unfamiliar exercise; in other words, 'how to exercise without exercise' or 'how to rehabilitate without exercise'. People recover from most musculoskeletal and pain conditions through three key processes: repair, adaptation, and alleviation of symptoms. The author explains how to identify the individual's recovery process and how to select the appropriate daily or sporting activities, and, how they can be modified to support recovery. Functional Exercise Prescription is a dramatic departure from the traditional strength and conditioning models that have been used for rehabilitation. The book explores the limitation of these models and explains how they can be replaced by functional daily activities ('functioncise'). It provides the practitioner with practical tools to construct a tailor-made plan for each individual to help expedite and optimize their recovery. Most rehabilitation can be constructed from a small familiar set of daily or sports activities. All human physical activity is exercise. Life is your gym.

Book excerpt: Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Seventh Edition With Online Video, provides a comprehensive approach to physical fitness appraisal and exercise prescription. The text bridges the gap between research and practice and synthesizes concepts and theories from exercise physiology, kinesiology, measurement, psychology, and nutrition to provide a clearly defined approach to physical fitness testing and the design of individualized exercise programs. The accompanying online videos enhance the learning experience and teach the techniques necessary for conducting fitness testing and program design. More than 40 clips featuring common exercise assessments will help users learn essentials of fitness testing, such as calibration of blood pressure cuffs, functional movement assessment, and push-up and pull-up testing. Unlike introductory texts, which typically focus on field testing for evaluating physical fitness, this text includes both field and laboratory assessment techniques. Readers will find the latest information on maximal and submaximal graded exercise testing in healthy populations, muscular fitness testing protocols and norms for children and adults, and field tests and norms for evaluating cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular fitness, body composition, flexibility, and balance. The seventh edition of Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription reflects current guidelines and recommendations, including new physical activity recommendations from the U.S. government, American Heart Association, and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), as well as the latest ACSM guidelines for medical exam and exercise testing requirements before beginning exercise programs. Additional updates to the seventh edition include the following: • New research substantiating the link between physical activity and disease risk • Expanded information on prediabetes, metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis, and overweight and obesity, including updated statistics on the global prevalence of obesity • New dietary guidelines for Americans, including information on MyPlate • Inclusion of SCORE system to estimate 10-year risk of fatal cardiac event due to atherosclerosis • Expanded information on the use of technology to monitor physical activity • Updated information on the use of exergaming and social networking to promote physical activity and exercise • Additional OMNI pictorial scales for ratings of perceived exertion during exercise • Latest ACSM FITT-VP principle for designing aerobic exercise programs • Whole-body vibration as an adjunct to resistance training and flexibility training Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Seventh Edition, is organized around physical fitness components, providing information on assessment followed by guidelines for designing exercise programs to improve each fitness component. The text begins with an overview of physical activity, health, and chronic disease, followed by discussion of preliminary health screening and risk classification, including the principles of fitness assessment, exercise prescription, and exercise program design. The remainder of the text provides in-depth coverage of assessment and exercise prescription for each of five physical fitness components: cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular fitness (strength, endurance, and power), body composition, flexibility, and balance. In each chapter, key questions help readers focus on essential information. Key points, review questions, and key terms reinforce concepts and summarize chapter content. An instructor guide, test package, chapter quizzes, and presentation package plus image bank provide tools for lecture preparation, creative content delivery, and class assessment. New to the seventh edition are online video clips for both students and instructors to further aid comprehension of the text and provide an additional tool for classroom demonstration. By integrating the latest research, recommendations, and information into guidelines for application, Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Seventh Edition, bridges the gap between research and practice for fitness professionals. Its unique scope, depth of coverage, and clearly outlined approach make it a valuable resource for students and exercise science professionals who want to increase their knowledge, skill, and competence in assessing clients’ fitness and designing individualized exercise programs.

Book excerpt: "Practitioners should always develop exercise prescription with consideration for an individual's health history, but this is especially true for individuals with a history of chronic disease. Exercise Prescription for Special Populations delves into how practitioners should prescribe exercise for those with conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension, as well as for those who are pregnant, wheelchair-dependent, or adolescents. Exercise Prescription for Special Populations utilizes a hybrid approach, combining elements of a traditional textbook and a "field guide" reference, with summative tables at the end of each chapter fulfilling the latter function. This reference aspect makes this text an ideal fit not just for upper-level undergraduate and graduate-level Exercise Science students, but also for exercise physiologists and personal fitness trainers working in fitness centers, hospitals, and in-/out-patient cardiac rehabilitation programs"--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of this study indicated that people with NSCLBP have a range of environmental and exercise preferences that are important to consider in exercise prescription. Enablers for exercise participation included shared decision making, effective communication, a history of exercise ability and participation, familiarity with exercise environments and the fitness culture, the option of individualised or supervised programs, use of preferred environments, family support, variety and fun, motivating strategies and education. Barriers included time constraints, cost, boring programs, symptom aggravation, consequences of stigma, dissatisfaction with formal exercises and distaste of gym "culture". The qualitative research results informed the development of a questionnaire that clinicians can use to explore participant exercise preferences and inform exercise prescription. Monash University SCERH granted approval for an RCT that compares an exercise rehabilitation program informed by a participant preferences questionnaire compared to a program without this guideline for patients with NSCLBP (CF08/2015 - 2008000990). The protocol has been registered and published and pilot work to refine the trial methods is underway. The qualitative study will evaluate clinician and participant experience. In the final phase of this research, focus groups were conducted to explore the views and practices of physiotherapists who prescribe exercise for people with NSCLBP, how they determine exercise prescription, and what they perceive as enablers and barriers to participation in prescribed exercise programs. Clinicians described a dilemma created by diagnostic uncertainty and problems gaining patient confidence in the therapeutic encounter. Ongoing research addresses the potential advantages associated with improving clinician skills in non-judgemental and reflective listening, and providing effective support in the face of resistance to lifestyle changes.
