Download or read book The Fraud written by Brad Parks and published by Minotaur Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Fraud, the most thrilling entry yet in Brad Parks's award-winning series, investigative reporter Carter Ross must chose who gets to live: him or his unborn child. A rash of carjackings terrorizing Newark become newsworthy when one such theft ends in the murder of a wealthy banking executive. The affable, wisecracking Ross is assigned the story, but he's weary of only writing about victims of crime who happen to be rich and white. To balance his reporting, he finds a Nigerian immigrant of more modest means who was also killed during a recent carjacking. When it turns out the two victims knew each other, sharing an unexplained round of golf at a tony country club shortly before their deaths, Carter is plunged onto the trail of a deadly band of car thieves that includes a sociopathic ex-convict. When his unborn child is put in harm's way, it becomes more than just a story for Carter. And he'll stop at nothing to rescue the baby-even if it costs him his own life. Parks, a rising star on the crime fiction scene known for his mix of wit and grit, delivers his most emotionally resonant book yet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential collection of career-spanning writings by the political satirist and #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Parliament of Whores. From his early pieces for the National Lampoon, through his classic reporting as Rolling Stone’s International Affairs editor in the 1980s and 1990s, and his brilliant, inimitable political journalism and analysis, P. J. O’Rourke has been entertaining and provoking readers with high octane prose, a gonzo Republican attitude, and a rare ability to make you laugh out loud. Christopher Buckley once described his work as “S. J. Perelman on acid.” Thrown Under the Omnibus brings together his funniest, most outrageous, most controversial, and most loved pieces in the definitive O’Rourke reader. Handpicked and introduced by the humorist himself, Thrown Under the Omnibus is the essential O’Rourke anthology. “The funniest writer in America.” —The Wall Street Journal
Download or read book The Cove Diary 2 written by Andrew Carne and published by ShieldCrest. This book was released on 2015-07-25 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been four years since The Cove Diary was published, well almost. Since the enclosed pages herein describe two years this rather means it has taken an entire two years to bring this monument of literature into being. Believe me, that is not a long time. On the face of it this time, the book looks like an edifice, a mighty volume, an insurmountable peak, unclimbable by normal common folk. Ordinarily I would agree with you but let us face it, we are talking about The Cove Diary here, not some intellectual, academic or historical masterpiece - you know, proper books. This is a book so vacuous that I am sure it is but a featherweight in your hands and anyway it is also available through the miracle of modern electronics as an e-book which weighs nothing at all. It would be unfair of me to suggest that this is a great work of note or that it is a work of note or even a work. Therefore I will not. It is however full of words, bigger than the last book, thus enabling higher shelves to be reached if you stand on it, and heavier, lending itself to greater impact if thrown. You may well ask, why so big? Why indeed when so many of the world’s great works are slim volumes: Wuthering Heights, 260 pages; To the Lighthouse, 320 pages (Barrett, hard of hearing edition); Noddy goes to Toyland, 32 pages. What they lack in volume they make up with talent in spades; I had to compensate. Additionally many of the copies of the first book ended up in holiday lets in The Cove. Holiday makers told me that they read the book during their two week stays – for free. A book twice the size, then, should deter even the most avid reader from completing it inside an average holiday stay and therefore they would have to buy a copy to finish it. Up top for dancing, I say. So, having established why size matters (in this case, at least) we should proceed to why you should buy it; why your life would be incomplete without a copy in your possession. If you have never heard of The Cove Diary before nor have you been drawn to witness the grievous stain on the Internet that is the daily witterings-on of a dangerously unstable (fear not, I mean in literary terms only) shopkeeper plying his trade in the Far West of Cornwall, I heartily commend this volume to you as a toe in the water of light – very light - entertainment. After all you know no better, do you? If on the other hand you are a seasoned reader of the online issues and, perhaps, the previous book there is no more wool to be pulled over your eyes. Should you purchase a copy of this lump and are thereafter disappointed, you should surely have know better.

Download or read book Smooth written by Edward Landers and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered just how those steely-eyed stalwart Naval Aviators got to be like that? Do you think they were all born that way? As a matter of fact most of them were just like the kid who grew up next door. This story is about a typical bumbling kid who had to overcome what would seem to be insurmountable obstacles in order to become one of the Navy's elite aviators. It's a tale of how an overweight, out of shape, naive young man with a definite goal for the first time in his life managed to beat the odds in order to fly the Navy's planes. It's a tale of the evolution of a young man from a carefree, non-thinking kid to one of the Navy's more accomplished aviators. The story will take you from the young man's first ideas about flying all the way through to the Navy's School of Preflight where the Marine Gunnery Sergeants who are tasked to do so try to whip young minds and bodies into shape. It will continue on to flight training culminating into the three separate squadrons that Ed Kruger served in. Throughout the story the reader is treated to an irreverent, humorous point of view as it relates to the aspiring young pilot who strives to become the polished aviator of his dreams. It's a novel about real people who make real mistakes and errors of judgment, about people who evolve to something better, about solving problems that seem unsolvable, about laughter, tears and the sweat of real life. It's about the urge to excel, to be better tomorrow than you were today. Ed Kruger is a pilot who reacts to things. He is not proactive. He makes mistakes, gets into trouble, weathers adversity and always comes out swinging. Above all, he is human. He's the kid next door and he's a success story. Although this is a novel and is classified as fiction it is taken from the real life experiences of the author. Everything in this book actually happened within the time period encompassed in the book. The reader will not only be treated to a very realistic view of Navy pilots who flew in the 1960-1970 era but will enjoy the humor that runs throughout the story. The book will not only amuse and enlighten readers and will give them hours of enjoyment.

Book Synopsis Examining Identity in Sports Media by : Heather L. Hundley
Download or read book Examining Identity in Sports Media written by Heather L. Hundley and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2009-05-12 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Including the work of top sports communication researchers, Examining Identity in Sports Media explores identity issues, including gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and (dis)ability, as well as the intersections within these various identity issues. This co-edited, twelve-chapter book investigates how various identity groups are framed, treated, affected, and shaped by a ubiquitous sports media, including television, magazines, film, the Internet, and newspapers. While other books may devote a chapter or section to issues of identity in sports media, this book offers a complete examination of identity from cover to cover, allowing identity variables to be both isolated and intermingled to capture how identity is negotiated within sports media platforms. Far more than a series of case studies, this book surveys the current state of the field while providing insight on future directions for identity scholarship in sports communication. Examining Identity in Sports Media is ideal for undergraduate or graduate-level courses in Sports Communication, Sports Media, Media Criticism, Sports Sociology, Gender Communication, and Identity Politics.
