Book excerpt: The purposes of this study were to (a) examine the relationship of physical activity with global self-esteem (GSE), physical self-worth (PSW), physical self-perceptions, and health related quality of life (HRQOL), and to (b) evaluate the effects of a 16 week exercise intervention on self-perception and quality of life related outcomes in sedentary youth. A sample, N = 40, of sedentary children 8-11 (M = 9.55) years of age, including 22 males and 18 females, 23 obese and 17 healthy weight participants, were assessed using the Children and Youth Physical Self-Perception Profile (CY-PSPP), Children's Attraction to Physical Activity scale and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL 4.0), pre- and post test. Accelerometers measured PA level pre- and post-test as well. Participants were randomly assigned to an exercise intervention (n = 26) and control (n = 14) condition. Exercise participants were required to exercise for one hour, supervised, at least 3 days/week over a 16-week period. Children exercised one-on-one or in small groups. Participants were required to average> 140 bpm per activity bout as measured by heart rate monitors. Activity options were limited to equipment and space available. The control group consisted of a no treatment condition. Pearson's Correlation demonstrated no significant association between physical activity and any of the psychological variables. Independent samples T-tests demonstrated similarity between the groups for most variables at baseline, and for all variables at follow-up; obese children were found to have impaired perceived body attractiveness and HRQOL physical functioning when compared to healthy weight participants. 2 x 2 Repeated Measures ANOVAs demonstrated no effect of the exercise intervention on any of the outcome variables for healthy weight or obese participants. Overall, the current investigation implies that moderate to vigorous physical activity level may lack association with global self-esteem, physical self-worth, physical self-perceptions and HRQOL among inactive 8-11 year olds. Additionally, basic exercise interventions may be insufficient to increase moderate to vigorous physical activity level, and improve global self-esteem, physical self-worth, physical self-perceptions, and HRQOL among inactive healthy weight or obese children.

The benefits of physical activity and dangers of a sedentary lifestyle to health outcomes, e.g. cardio-vascular disease, obesity, diabetes and psychological well-being are well documented children. Due to methodological and measurement problems, research addressing the relationship between psychological well-being and physical activity are inconsistent and weak. This series of studies aimed to overcome the problems of previous research and investigated the relationship between children's psychological well-being and habitual physical activity. Previous research has highlighted an association between children's physical activity and individual psychological well-being constructs. However, Masse et al. (1998) argued that psychological well-being should contain the measurement of both positive (e.g. self-esteem) and negative (e.g. depression) psychological states. Subsequently, Parfitt and Eston (2005) identified an association between children's total physical activity and psychological well-being (anxiety, depression, self-esteem). Limitations of previous studies include the type of physical activity measures used and the measurement of only global self-esteem, which itself is multidimensional. The purpose of this research was to extend and expand on the limitations of the Parfitt and Eston's (2005) study. Psychological measures included both global, domain and sub-domain measurements of self-esteem, with accelerometry providing estimates of total daily physical activity and time spent in sedentary through to vigorous intensity activity. Study One assessed relationships between psychological well-being and physical activity using the same psychological constructs as Parfitt and Eston (2005), but with physical activity intensity included. Results highlighted an association between self-esteem and time spent in very light activity. Study Two assessed the current data's applicability with the proposed models and theories related to self-esteem. It was concluded that the current data provided an adequate fit with the proposed models and theories of self-esteem. Study Three introduced the domain and sub-domain constructs of self-esteem and a more valid measure of physical activity. Results highlighted associations at the global, domain and sub-domain levels with predominately time spent in very light and vigorous intensity activity. Very light intensity activity was associated with negative effects while vigorous intensity activity was associated with positive effects. It was hypothesised that if these cross-sectional relationships also existed longitudinally, then an intervention study changing the time children spend in very light and vigorous intensity activity may be beneficial to children's psychological health. With the relationship between children's psychological well-being and physical activity clearly highlighted, Study Four assessed the direction of this relationship and aimed to inform a potential intervention study. Longitudinal data were collected over a 12-month period and multi-level modelling was used to analyse the direction of the relationship. Results highlighted a potential indirect effect of time accumulated in very light and vigorous intensity activity on psychological well-being, which reinforced the previous cross-sectional studies. Furthermore, a reciprocal effect was identified between physical activity and the physical self-worth domain. It was concluded that interventions decreasing time spent in very light and increasing vigorous intensity activity may be beneficial to children's psychological well-being. Study Five aimed to have an impact on children's psychological well-being, by reducing the time children spent in very light intensity activity, through an increase in daily step counts. Although the intervention decreased the time children spent in sedentary behaviour, there was no influence on psychological well-being. However, there were several methodological limitations that affected the intervention, limiting the conclusions that can be drawn from this study, including a small sample size providing available data for analysis. The results of this thesis show a relationship between children's psychological well-being and habitual physical activity intensity exists. Further research manipulating the time children accumulate in very light (reduction) and vigorous (increase) intensity activity, can potentially impact positively on the psychological well-being of a normal population of children.

Current public health recommendations call for at least 60 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity for children. Many children do not meet these recommendations. Objective/hypothesis . To examine the relationship between coordination and physical activity in 8-10 year-old children living in Erie County, New York. The relative reinforcing value of physical and sedentary activity will also be assessed. Previous findings . Previous research has suggested the amount of physical activity children engage in may be influenced by their degree of coordination/motor proficiency. Further, reduced coordination may contribute to childhood obesity, particularly in children where there is increasing evidence of a link between obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. Research conducted in our lab previously found that coordination as measured by the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (BOTMP) was a predictor of self-reported physical activity in children. Research design/material methods . Seventy-two children (39 girls and 33 boys) met the eligibility for this study and completed all components. Children's physical activity was assessed by activity monitored data (accelerometry), and their coordination was determined by the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (BOTMP). Additionally, a computerized behavioral choice task program was utilized to determine the relative reinforcing value of physical and sedentary activity. The Children's Self-Perceptions of Adequacy in and Predilection for Physical Activity Scale (CSAPPA) was used to measure children's self-perceptions of their adequacy in performing, and their desire to participate in, physical activities. This study was approved by the Child and Youth Institutional Review Board at the Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo. The Child and Youth Institutional Review Board reviews research proposals received from University at Buffalo researchers involving the health and well being of minors. Results . Positive associations were found between motor proficiency and physical activity in children, while percent time in sedentary activity was negatively associated with motor proficiency. Motor proficiency was independently associated with physical activity after controlling for the variables in step one, explaining an additional 7.5% of the variance. Children who scored higher on the CSAPPA scale were more likely to have significantly greater motor proficiency compared to children who scored lower on the CSAPPA. The relationship between the relative reinforcing value for activity and physical activity was significant for girls but not boys. Potential Significance . This research has the potential benefit of helping understand the role of coordination and the relative reinforcing value of physical activity in physical activity participation. Perhaps because of this increase in sedentary lifestyles, obesity has become one of the biggest public health threats in the 21st century. Furthermore, both obesity and physical inactivity are closely related to psychological health, and may play an important role in shaping self-perceptions and feeling of general well-being. '...' In the first study, physical status, physical activity levels, and social physique anxiety measures were obtained from an adolescent sample of 259 participants. Partial correlation analyses revealed that physical activity involvement was not directly linked with physical status; however, both factors were significantly associated with social physique anxiety, which suggested evidence of an indirect link between the two constructs. That is, analyses showed that poor physical status was associated with higher levels of physique anxiety, which in turn linked to low engagement in physical activity. In addition, age and gender effects emerged, revealing unique differences in the ways in which these three variables may be related. To cross-validate and further examine these relationships STUDY 2 extended the range of self-perception measures to include a multidimensional assessment of physical self-concept and a global self-esteem measure along with physique anxiety. These variables were assessed in a German adult sample (N = 229), again alongside measures of physical status and physical activity involvement. Consistent with STUDY 1, no direct link was found between physical status and levels of physical activity involvement. However, evidence of an indirect link did emerge as both variables were related to multiple dimensions of physical self-concept, thereby reinforcing and extending the findings from STUDY 1. Furthermore, age effects emerged for physical self-concept, which had not been confirmed in previous research on physical self-concept. STUDY 3 employed a longitudinal design and investigated changes in physical self-concept, global self-esteem and social physique anxiety before, during, and after participation in a 12-week weight management programme. Participants (N = 63) were assigned to one of three conditions: (1) cognitive-behavioural treatment only, (2) cognitive-behavioural treatment and exercise, and (3) non-treatment control. Statistical analyses revealed a small, but significant reduction in weight for members of both treatment groups. Relative to controls, both treatment groups also improved on a variety of physical self-concept dimensions. At the same time, however, significant group main effects suggested that a weight-loss program incorporating exercise involvement may provide physical self-concept benefits that go beyond those obtained with standard CBT regimes. Collectively, these studies add to the growing body of literature on the connections between physical activity, self-perceptions and physical status. They also highlight the importance of involvement in habitual physical activity throughout the lifespan. Findings are discussed with regards to their contribution to the extant literature, and applied implications, limitations, and future directions are considered.

Book excerpt: Abstract: There is epidemiological evidence for a strong association between obesity and insufficient leisure-time physical activity and low levels of occupational activity in industrialized societies. Women are more likely to be physically inactive and overweight, and thus, we need an effective approach using behavioral theories to help sedentary overweight/obese women adopt and maintain regular exercise. Project CHANGE (to being a Confident, Healthy, And Goal--directed Exerciser) is an 8-week intervention with 4-week follow-up that targeted constructs from Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and addressed both behavioral strategies and physical skills. A total of 25 eligible participants were enrolled in Project CHANGE and were randomized to two treatment conditions: Self-Determination Theory-based exercise training plus behavioral intervention (SD group) or standard care (SC group) with traditional supervised exercise training. The final sample size was 21 (NSD = 11; NSC = 10). There were 2 dropouts from each group. Participants completed fitness assessments and questionnaires to measure physical activity, quality of life, depressive symptoms, SDT constructs, and other established psychological mediators of exercise, such as self-efficacy and goal setting. The results showed that the weekly energy expenditure did not differ significantly between the groups at post-intervention when baseline PA was controlled. However, the majority of the participants in the SD group remained active at the 4-week follow-up assessment and met the public health PA recommendation. The treatment effects on the psychological variables were limited when controlling for baseline values. For both groups, integrated regulation, perceived autonomy support, and exercise goal-setting significantly increased over time. Exercise planning had a tendency to increase, but not significantly. Scheduling self-efficacy was significantly higher in the SD group than the SC group, regardless of time. In the follow-up analysis, we categorized all the participants into two groups based upon exercise adherence, defined as exercising>= 150 min/week at the 4-week follow-up (i.e., adherent group and non-adherent group). Participants in the adherent group had significantly greater autonomous motivation (i.e., intrinsic motivation, integrated regulation, and identified regulation), scheduling and coping self-efficacies, and self-regulatory techniques (i.e., goal-setting and planning) compared to the non-adherent group. Confidence and ability to self-regulate were important for exercise adherence. Goal-setting was the most influential predictor among these variables. The results show promise and warrant additional testing of Project CHANGE as a method to help overweight or obese women start and further maintain exercise behavior. A higher fidelity SDT intervention with larger sample size is necessary to examine the treatment effect and the proposed SDT causal pathways.
