Book excerpt: Black & white print. American Government 3e aligns with the topics and objectives of many government courses. Faculty involved in the project have endeavored to make government workings, issues, debates, and impacts meaningful and memorable to students while maintaining the conceptual coverage and rigor inherent in the subject. With this objective in mind, the content of this textbook has been developed and arranged to provide a logical progression from the fundamental principles of institutional design at the founding, to avenues of political participation, to thorough coverage of the political structures that constitute American government. The book builds upon what students have already learned and emphasizes connections between topics as well as between theory and applications. The goal of each section is to enable students not just to recognize concepts, but to work with them in ways that will be useful in later courses, future careers, and as engaged citizens. In order to help students understand the ways that government, society, and individuals interconnect, the revision includes more examples and details regarding the lived experiences of diverse groups and communities within the United States. The authors and reviewers sought to strike a balance between confronting the negative and harmful elements of American government, history, and current events, while demonstrating progress in overcoming them. In doing so, the approach seeks to provide instructors with ample opportunities to open discussions, extend and update concepts, and drive deeper engagement.

Download or read book George W. Bush and the War on Women written by Barbara Finlay and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 2006-09 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a devastating look at the actions and policies of the George W. Bush administration in terms of their impact on women in the United States and abroad. A largely ignored aspect of his presidency, Bush's policies and actions have in many ways reversed or inhibited women's progress over the past three decades. While the media have focused on his opposition to abortion, Bush's less-publicized anti-feminist agenda has in fact been much more extensive. From shutting down women's offices in the government to de-funding programs that assist women, from opposing global women's rights treaties to supporting anti-feminist organizations. the author argues that Bush has opposed women's interests in multiple ways.

Download or read book Public appointments written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Public Administration Select Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-10-19 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report forms the Committee's response to Sir David Normington's consultation on reforming the regulation of public appointments, and looks at further issues relating to the recruitment and pay of public appointees. The Committee welcomes the broad thrust of Sir David Normington's proposed reforms, including the proposal to streamline the existing Code for Public Appointments and to adopt a lighter touch in regulating the public appointments process. It particularly supports his commitment to broadening genuine diversity in public appointments. The Public Appointments Commissioner, however, should be given a new remit to review Departmental appraisal systems, to ensure that underperformance by appointees is consistently addressed and that appointees who are not up to the mark are not reappointed. The Committee also supports the establishment of a government Centre of Excellence for public appointments, which would have the expertise to widen the pool of candidates applying for vacancies. Given their cost to the taxpayer, the Government should reduce the use of recruitment consultants for appointments to public bodies. Substantial savings could be made through utilising and developing the capabilities of existing human resources units in Government Departments and through the establishment of a Centre of Excellence. There is concern that the post of manager of top talent in Whitehall (Director General for Civil Service Capability) has effectively been abolished and its functions dispersed. This post should be re-established.

Book Synopsis Appointment of John Griffith-Jones as Chair-designate of the Financial Conduct Authority by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Treasury Committee
Download or read book Appointment of John Griffith-Jones as Chair-designate of the Financial Conduct Authority written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Treasury Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-01-18 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Griffith-Jones is to chair the new Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Although the FCA is a successor body to the Financial Services Authority (FSA), his is not a continuity role. The Committee believes that the FCA can be radically different from its predecessor under the new chair in at least four respects: He must restore the credibility of the conduct regulator. Although a great deal of time and effort was put into conduct matters, the FSA left consumers exposed to some of the worst scandals in UK financial history. The Committee expects Mr Griffith-Jones and his board to ensure that the new organisation adopts a radically different approach. It is noted that the PRA, which has assumed responsibility for most prudential aspects of the FSA's work, has done this, with its adoption of a move to judgement-based regulation. The FCA has different objectives from the old FSA: as well as having to ensure that markets work well, it has objectives with regard to consumer protection, the integrity of the UK financial system, and competition. The Committee has criticised the complexity of the objectives set out for the FCA in the Financial Services Bill; but Mr Griffith-Jones and the FCA's senior leadership will need to think about the inter-relationship of the FCA's objectives and how meaningfully to fulfil them. The Treasury Committee will engage in an oversight role of the governance at the FCA and with the commitments that Mr Griffith-Jones has made to the Committee, Parliament will expect the new FCA to respond to Treasury Committee requests for information promptly and thoroughly.

Download or read book Triumphs and Tragedies of the Modern Presidency written by Maxmillian Angerholzer III and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applying the lessons of presidential history, this anthology of case studies—written by leading political scientists, historians, and subject matter experts—delves into the many facets of the presidency and promotes a greater understanding of the presidency for policymakers, academics, students, and general readers alike. Abraham Lincoln once said, "Fellow citizens, we cannot escape history." One hundred and fifty years later, this statement remains true: the lessons of history are increasingly important at a time of political deadlock and growing skepticism of leadership among the American public. An established classic in its field, Triumphs and Tragedies of the Modern Presidency underscores the importance of looking back to set an intelligent course for the future and promotes a better understanding of the U.S. presidency. This updated and revised second edition offers rare insights on presidential leadership since 2001 and adds considerable new information related to inter-term transitions. The case studies in this single-volume work cover an unparalleled scope of "modern presidential history" and related topics, beginning with the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt and continuing to the presidency of Barack Obama. Examples of the events and subject matter of the case studies include the interstate transport system, the building of the social safety net, the civil rights movement, the space program, environmental protection, education reform, the IT revolution, energy policy, the budget, economic policy, foreign policy, national security, defense policy, and presidential scandals. Each case study highlights a historical lesson and is authored by a different political scientist, historian, or subject matter expert, offering readers a multidisciplinary examination of the presidency.
