Book excerpt: Exclusive processes provide a window into the bound state structure of hadrons in QCD as well as the fundamental processes which control hadron dynamics at the amplitude level. The natural calculus for describing bound state structure of relativistic composite systems needed for describing exclusive amplitudes is the light-cone Fock expansion which encodes the multi-quark, gluonic, and color correlations of a hadron in terms of frame-independent wavefunctions. In hard exclusive processes in which hadrons receive a large momentum transfer, perturbative QCD leads to factorization theorems which separate the physics of bound state structure from that of the relevant quark and gluonic hard-scattering reactions which underlie these reactions. At leading twist, the bound state physics is encoded in terms of universal ''distribution amplitudes, '' the fundamental theoretical quantities which describe the valence quark substructure of hadrons as well as nuclei. The combination of discretized light-cone quantization and transverse lattice methods are now providing nonperturbative predictions for the pion distribution amplitude. A basic feature of the gauge theory formalism is ''color transparency, '' the absence of initial and final state interactions of rapidly-moving compact color-singlet states. Other applications of the factorization formalism are briefly discussed, including semileptonic B decays, deeply virtual Compton scattering, and dynamical higher twist effects in inclusive reactions. A new type of jet production reaction, ''self-resolving diffractive interactions'' provide empirical constraints on the light-cone wavefunctions of hadrons in terms of their quark and gluon degrees of freedom as well as the composition of nuclei in terms of their nucleon and mesonic degrees of freedom.

Book excerpt: The application of QCD to hadron dynamics at short distances, where asymptotic freedom allows a systematic perturbative approach, is addressed. The main theme of the approach is to incorporate systematically the effects of the hadronic wave function in large momentum transfer exclusive and inclusive reactions. Although it is conventional to treat the hadron as a classical source of on-shell quarks, there are important dynamical effects due to hadronic constituent structure which lead to a broader testing ground for QCD. QCD predictions are discussed for exclusive processes and form factors at large momentum transfer in which the short-distance behavior and the finite compositeness of the hadronic wave functions play crucial roles. Many of the standard tests of QCD are reviewed including the predictions for R = sigma/sub ee−.-->.had/[sigma]sub e+e−.--> mu./sup +/.mu.−/, the structure functions of hadrons and photons, jet phenomena, and the QCD corrections to deep inelastic processes. The exclusive-inclusive connection in QCD, the effects of power-law scale-breaking contributions, and the important role of the available energy in controlling logarithmic scale violations are also discussed. 150 references, 44 figures. Measures of the hadronic wavefunction (form factors, magnetic moments, etc.), and the QCD analysis of high momentum transfer exclusive processes are discussed. It is also shown how meson distribution amplitudes can be measured in .gamma gamma. .-->. M anti M reactions. The connection of the Fock state basis to leading and higher twist contributions to deep inelastic scattering is given. How many different QCD processes are interelated through the hadronic Fock states is discussed, and a novel type of QCD subprocess - direct coupled hadron-induced reactions is considered. A new prediction for the proton form factor is also given. Also, a simple phenomenology of hadron wavefunctions is introduced, and present constraints on the form and normalization of the valence meson and nucleon Fock states are discussed. An important conclusion is that the valence Fock state as defined at equal time or the light cone appears to have a significantly smaller radius than that of the physical hadron; higher Fock states thus play an essential role in low momentum transfer phenomenology. Applications to quark jet diffraction excitation and the hidden heavy quark Fock state structure of hadrons are also discussed. 83 references. (WHK).
