Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the Telecommunications Policy Research Conference which reports on research into telecommunications policy issues. While the conference is now a respectable 23 years old, this is only the second printed edition of selected papers. A new law, the Telecommunications Act of 1996, accelerated the process of integration in the communication industry and made major revisions to the Communications Act of 1934 that increase the incentive for integration within the industry. Although the papers in this volume were written prior to the passage of the new law, their importance is merely enhanced by it. They deal with fundamental, complex policy problems that arise when previously separate segments of the telecommunications industry are integrated, rather than specific regulatory rules that are likely to be changed under the new law. With the passage of this law, the timeframe for developing appropriate policies for an integrated industry has been shortened. Changes expected to occur over a period of several years will now likely occur much more rapidly. These papers provide insights to help guide the transition in the industry. Divided into five parts, this volume: * deals with problems of transforming local exchange telephone service from a monopoly in each geographical area to an interconnected competitive network of networks, * considers the pricing problems that arise in an integrated network carrying traffic of different types across multiple service providers, * examines the problem of achieving interoperability in complex networks, * considers issues of intellectual property that arise in expected integrated networks of the future, and * discusses electronic publication of scholarly journals, copyright protection, and the applicability of copyright law in the digital age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinguished authorship characterizes Antitrust Analysis: Problems, Text, and Cases, first written by Phil Areeda, the leading antitrust commentator of the 20th century. The text continues to be revised by three of the leading lawyer economists of the early 21st century. This traditional casebook is also known for its pedagogy (cases, explanatory text, and problems) and insightful text that conveys essential background information along with necessary economic principles. Recognizing that the most important development in antitrust doctrine over the past fifty years is the increasingly central role of economic analysis, the authors take great care to convey economic learning to students in plain language with a minimum of technical apparatus, resulting in a powerful volume adopted by experienced instructors and first-time teachers alike. Helpful appendices include Selected Statutes, such as the Sherman Act, the Clayton Act, and the Federal Trade Commission Act. New to the Eighth Edition: The addition of C. Scott Hemphill as a co-author, adding to the already distinguished author team. Since the last edition, antitrust enforcers and courts have struggled to grapple with the rising importance of platforms in our increasingly digital economy. The new edition gives extensive attention to these developments, including: The Supreme Court’s decision in Ohio v. American Express Major enforcement actions against Apple, Facebook, and Google New Vertical Merger Guidelines Completely rewritten and streamlined introductory material in Chapter 1. Professors and student will benefit from: Distinguished authorship: Original author Areeda was the leading antitrust commentator of the 20th century; Kaplow, Edlin, and Hemphill are leading lawyer-economists of the early 21st century. Pedagogy: Traditional casebook with cases, explanatory text, and problems. Insightful textual explanations convey essential background information and necessary economic principles. Adopted by experienced instructors and first-time teachers alike. Appendix includes selected statutes and the Sherman Act, the Clayton Act, and the Federal Trade Commission Act. Teaching materials Include: Teacher’s Manual

Book excerpt: A focus on memory has come to prominence across a wide range of disciplines. History, literature, philosophy, anthropology, and cultural studies have placed memory at the heart of their interrogations of subjectivity, narrative, time and imagination. At the same time, memory has emerged as a central theme and preoccupation in popular literature, film and television, and the emergence of memory as an academic theme cannot be separated from its prominence in the wider culture. This volume represents, explores and interrogates the current developments, engaging directly with the place of memory in culture, and with memory's meaning's and history.

Game Theory has developed greatly in the last decade, and today it is an essential tool in much of economic theory. The three volumes will cover the fundamental theoretical aspects, a wide range of applications to economics, several chapters on applications to political science, and individual chapters on relations with other disciplines. The topics covered in the present volume include chess-playing computers, an introduction to the non-cooperative theory, repeated games, bargaining theory, auctions, location, entry deterrence, patents, the cooperative theory and its applications, and the relation between Game Theory and ethics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper characterizes and evaluates what has been called variously the new, new-view, strategic or industrial organization approach to international trade and trade policy. This approach analyzes trade in strategic environments, ' those in which small numbers of large, self-consciously independent agents interact, and in which their activities themselves are interdependently (strategically) linked. The new view's perspectives have been controversial but often because they have been misunderstood. Many of its subtler strengths have remained hidden. The misunderstandings and subtler strengths of the approach are the main themes of the paper. Its secondary emphasis is on applied and empirical work in the new tradition and its policy implications, with special regard to Pacific trade and investment.
