Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The space and time dependence of decaying resonant oscillations excited in a collisionless plasma by an infinitesimally small pulsed dipole is determined, first in the absence and then in the presence of an external magnetic field. In the presence of a magnetic field only the 'quasi-electrostatic' resonances are treated. These occur at the plasma frequency, the electron cyclotron frequency F, the upper hybrid frequency, the lower hybrid resonant frequencies and at the frequencies nF where n is a positive integer. The quasi-electrostatic approximation is used in the treatment of these resonances; the limits of its validity are examined in some detail for the upper hybrid frequency resonance. No similar approximations are made for plasma oscillations in the absence of a magnetic field; the more accurate results so obtained differ little from those derived with the aid of the quasi-electrostatic approximation, within the region of interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive theoretical study of the electromagnetic eigenwaves propagating perpendicular to the axis of symmetry in various cylindrical waveguide-structures filled with magneto-active plasma. It is the second, updated and significantly expanded edition of our book “Surface Flute Waves in Plasmas. Theory and Applications”, published in 2014 in the “Springer Series on Atomic, Optical, and Plasma Physics”. First, the text is complemented by a study of the wave energy rotation around the axis of the waveguides. Second, excitation of these waves by an electron beam gyrating around the axis is investigated in detail. “Surface waves” means that these waves only propagate along plasma surfaces and not in uniform infinite plasmas. Their wave amplitudes decrease with going away from the plasma boundary into the plasma depth. “Flute” means that the axial wavenumbers kz of the waves in plasma cylinders are assumed to be zero, and the waves only propagate in azimuthal direction. In this case, the surfaces of constant density resemble fluted Greek columns. However, the presence of a small but finite kz can be taken into account by the method of successive approximations, using the theory of surface flute waves as zeroth approach. A variety of present applications of surface waves and possible future applications are also included. The book applies to both professionals dealing with physical and technological problems of confined plasmas and to graduate and post-graduate students specializing in the fíelds of electrodynamics, plasma physics and related applications.

Book excerpt: Parametric electrostatic instabilities in a non-relativistic, stationary plasma excited by a monoenergetic, relativistic electron beam with density sinusoidally modulated along the direction of the beam flow have been theoretically investigated using multiple-time-scale perturbation expansion method. The instability occurs due to resonant energy transfer from the negative energy carrying beam-synchronous mode into the positive energy plasma oscillation mode of a uniform beam-plasma system. The resonant coupling occurs in the presence of the density modulation. The linear growth rate and the width of of the unstable spectrum have been determined. It has been found that, for a given beam to plasma density ratio, there exists an upper limit to the initial beam energy for which the instabilities can be excited.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deliberate, controlled excitation of a special class of electrostatic waves was achieved in a pulsed electron-beam-generated hydrogen plasma. Microwave drive signals near the electron gyro frequency were applied to the electron beam in the form of transverse electric fields. With a change in the magnetic field, the beam plasma system could be made stable or unstable with respect to the emission of narrow-band, cyclotron-harmonic radiation. In the stable mode, the r-f drive fields, applied with a bifilar helix coupler, excited cyclotron harmonic waves propagating across the magnetic field inducing narrow-band radiation. For the radiation to be observable, the Doppler frequency shift condition had to be satisfied by appropriate values of beam voltage, drive coupler pitch, magnetic field, and drive frequency. With the system in the unstable mode, the rate of plasma generation was increased, using cyclotron frequency drive fields which resulted in radiation appearing earlier (at a given receiver sensitivity) in the beam voltage pulse. Under the same conditions, the frequency of the self-excited noise was shifted by enlargement of the plasma electron orbit caused by sufficiently strong drive fields. Whether the system was in the stable or unstable mode, noise could only be measured when the density was sufficiently high that the receiving frequency was less than the upper hybrid frequency. These stimulated noise emissions are closely related to the high-harmonic, nonthermal radiation at microwave frequencies reported in recent years. (Author).

Book excerpt: The field of high-power laser-plasma interaction has grown in the last few decades, with applications ranging from laser-driven fusion and laser acceleration of charged particles to laser ablation of materials. This comprehensive text covers fundamental concepts including electromagnetics and electrostatic waves, parameter instabilities, laser driven fusion, charged particle acceleration and gamma rays. Two important techniques of laser proton interactions including target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA) and radiation pressure acceleration (RPA) are discussed in detail, along with their applications in the field of medicine. An analytical framework is developed for laser beat-wave and wakefield excitation of plasma waves and subsequent acceleration of electrons. The book covers parametric oscillator model and studies the coupling of laser light with collective modes.

Book excerpt: TO THE SECOND EDITION In the nine years since this book was first written, rapid progress has been made scientifically in nuclear fusion, space physics, and nonlinear plasma theory. At the same time, the energy shortage on the one hand and the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn on the other have increased the national awareness of the important applications of plasma physics to energy production and to the understanding of our space environment. In magnetic confinement fusion, this period has seen the attainment 13 of a Lawson number nTE of 2 x 10 cm -3 sec in the Alcator tokamaks at MIT; neutral-beam heating of the PL T tokamak at Princeton to KTi = 6. 5 keV; increase of average ß to 3%-5% in tokamaks at Oak Ridge and General Atomic; and the stabilization of mirror-confined plasmas at Livermore, together with injection of ion current to near field-reversal conditions in the 2XIIß device. Invention of the tandem mirror has given magnetic confinement a new and exciting dimension. New ideas have emerged, such as the compact torus, surface-field devices, and the EßT mirror-torus hybrid, and some old ideas, such as the stellarator and the reversed-field pinch, have been revived. Radiofrequency heat ing has become a new star with its promise of dc current drive. Perhaps most importantly, great progress has been made in the understanding of the MHD behavior of toroidal plasmas: tearing modes, magnetic Vll Vlll islands, and disruptions.

Book excerpt: The radiation characteristics of a line source of magnetic current embedded in a homogeneous electron plasma of infinite extent are investigated for the case in which a uniform magnetic field is impressed externally throughout the medium in the dir ction of h source. The singlefluid theory of magnetohydrodynamics is employed. A very simple model is assumed for the plasma. Under this assumption, it is found that there are two modes of propagation of waves of mall amplitude. By examining the behavior of these modes in the limiting cases of vanishing external magnetic field or infinite source frequency, they are identifiable as the modified forms of the usual plasma and optical modes which exist in an isotropic electron plasma. The dispersion rela io for t e o odes are discus H POWER RADIATED IN EACH OF THE TWO MODES IS ALSO EVALUATED. It is found that the power radiated in the optical mode is always lower than that due to the line source in free space, hereas the power radiated in the plasma mode is higher than that value for certain ranges of the source frequency.
