Book excerpt: Plasma electron oscillations were excited in experiments in which the essential conditions of the Bohm and Gross two-beam theory were reasonably fulfilled. Independent interpenetrating electron beams were passed through a plasma of much higher charge density; in traveling through the plasma the beam electrons ionized neutral atoms and thereby produced sufficient positive ions to compensate their own charge to a reasonably high degree. With boundary electrodes present, standing waves of longitudinal plasma electron oscillations were produced. It was established that, in agreement with theory, no velocity modulation of the beam electrons prior to their entering the plasma was needed in order to cause the buildup of large amplitude oscillations. Tests were made with apparatus designed specifically to avoid such modulation. (Author).

Book excerpt: The velocity distribution of the electrons within a plasma shock front is investigated by methods of the kinetic theory arranged in a manner to account for heavy deviations from thermodynamic equilibrium. The distribution function exhibits two peaks and becomes unstable with respect to electron oscillations, the shock wave being sufficiently strong (Mach number greater than approximately 6.5). The second peak is formed by runaway electrons, i.e. those fast electrons which transgress the shock front from the hot region. The frequencies, wave numbers, growth rates, phase and group velocities of the excited oscillations, and the influence of the Ohmic damping are calculated approximatively. The results are applied to non-thermal radiofrequency radiation of the sun. (Author).

Anomalous resistance results when collective action by electrons causes randomization of the growing oscillations in the two-stream instability. This sequence of events leading to dissipation of energy was predicted several years ago by Buneman. It is believed that this objective was achieved (i.e., that anomalous resistance is evidenced by observations to be reported here), on a high density plasma subjected to r-f fields by a cavity resonant at a frequency well below the plasma frequency. With sufficient r-f power and density, the two-stream instability should be excited to turbulence level during each halfcycle, causing irreversible power loss. Calculations enumerating the necessary conditions for observing the phenomena were made, showing that the resistance can easily be seen above the intrinsic cavity loss using very moderate amounts of power. Laboratory studies of the plasma instabilities generated in microwave-plasma interactions have helped to understand the geophysical experiments. Microwave-plasma research has also been useful in modeling the interaction of lasers and plasmas, particularly in relation to efforts using pulsed lasers to compress and heat plasma to thermonuclear conditions. An experiment is described which investigates the evolution of the parametric instability which occurs with near resonant matching of the microwave frequency and plasma frequency. Near threshold, a finely detailed spectrum of satelite electron plasma waves is observed. These waves break down into a turbulent plasma condition with a marked change in power absorbed by the plasma. The plasma passes through several distinctive regimes of turbulent plasma conditions. At the highest power levels used, there are plasma waves hundreds of megacycles from the driving frequency. The plasma is found to absorb a significant amount of power and heat electrons to high energies. (Author).
