Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents recent research on probabilistic methods in economics, from machine learning to statistical analysis. Economics is a very important – and at the same a very difficult discipline. It is not easy to predict how an economy will evolve or to identify the measures needed to make an economy prosper. One of the main reasons for this is the high level of uncertainty: different difficult-to-predict events can influence the future economic behavior. To make good predictions and reasonable recommendations, this uncertainty has to be taken into account. In the past, most related research results were based on using traditional techniques from probability and statistics, such as p-value-based hypothesis testing. These techniques led to numerous successful applications, but in the last decades, several examples have emerged showing that these techniques often lead to unreliable and inaccurate predictions. It is therefore necessary to come up with new techniques for processing the corresponding uncertainty that go beyond the traditional probabilistic techniques. This book focuses on such techniques, their economic applications and the remaining challenges, presenting both related theoretical developments and their practical applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1986, Vietnam initiated its extensive economic reform program, known as Doi Moi, which saved the country - then in a devastating economic crisis - from a collapse. The introduction of market system has brought back substantial changes in both people's life and the national economy. Market mechanism, commercial institutions, private properties and capital goods ownership, free trade... have since come into existence. Gradually, financial markets have grown up to be a critically component of Vietnam's economic transition. This book provides some in-depth introduction and analysis of Vietnam's financial markets with emphasis on corporate debts and equity, gold and foreign exchange. It may be regarded as one of the most important contributions to the literature of Vietnam's financial economics, thus far. It contains original research results, which should benefit readers with interest in understanding the contemporary issues of Vietnam's economy, for either business or academic purposes. In addition, policy makers and international donors could also find its insights and implications useful; many of which are original and supported by empirical evidences.

Vietnam is no exception. Beside the opportunities for growth and exports there are many risk factors that developing economies have to face, for example, the volatility of the exchange rate or unfamiliar trade barriers. Understanding the degree of pass-through of exchange rate and antidumping duties into tradable goods' prices was really necessary for policy makers as well as enterprises in pricing, particularly in inflation targeting countries. With the empirical studies for Vietnam and some countries using both micro and macro data, this book provieds a comprehensive view of exchange rate pass-through in Vietnam and some experiences of business to limit impacts of antidumping duties."--Page 4 of cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English-language scholarship all too often dismisses South Vietnam as an American creation, a product of US imperialism. Republican Vietnam, 1963–1975 boldly upends this depiction, exposing a diverse and dynamic portrait of the Second Republic. In twelve essays, each based on original archival research, the volume brings to life the Second Republic in all its complexities, displaying how politicians, students, educators, publishers, journalists, musicians, religious leaders, businessmen, and ordinary citizens built a highly intricate society—with dazzling entrepreneurial zeal, an outspoken press, globally engaged religions, a vibrant intellectual and associational culture, and a level of artistic production that remains unmatched since the Vietnam War. That inspired and frenzied age, though short lived, held a resilient spirit that Vietnamese refugees have kept alive. The trove of vernacular music and print media, not to mention the many associations the Vietnamese diaspora founded, exemplify the republican values that once energized South Vietnamese culture. But this nuanced society has appeared in popular media and American scholarship as a hopelessly dependent nation, led by corrupt dictators beholden to US interests. In contrast to such negative stereotypes, this account situates South Vietnamese front and center as agents of their own histories. Republican Vietnam is the first collection of scholarly essays on the Second Republic since the end of the Vietnam War. It is also among the first to use republicanism as a lens to re-examine twentieth-century Vietnamese history, the Vietnam War, and the diaspora. The twelve essays together show how war, in tandem with external intervention, shaped South Vietnam’s economy, culture, and the life of every individual and family. By featuring works from Vietnamese and Vietnamese diasporic studies, this text takes the important step of bridging the two fields, laying the foundation for cross-disciplinary projects in the future.

Book excerpt: Successful containment of COVID-19 and strong policy support have helped contain the health and economic fallout, and a strong recovery is underway. Growth in 2020 reached 2.9 percent, among the highest in the world. However, labor market conditions remain weak. Corporate balance sheets have worsened, potentially hampering private investment and job prospects. Banks entered the crisis in a stronger position than in previous years, but weaknesses remain. Vietnam’s economy remains heavily reliant on external trade and is vulnerable to trade tensions.

Book excerpt: With the rise of China, India and the re-emergence of East Asia from the financial crisis of 1997–98, monetary issues in Asia have acquired great significance as the region holds the largest reserves in the world and consequently plays a major role in the global macro-economy. In addition, there are also a great variety of monetary policy regimes at play in the region – reflecting each country's needs and policy preferences. This volume explores monetary, exchange rate and macroeconomic policies in Asia. A particular question that is analysed is Asia's experience since the crisis with the use of monetary policy to manage the resurgence in capital inflows. It also examines the theoretical and policy issues associated with international capital flows, the increasing degree of integration of financial markets and exchange rates for emerging Asian economies. The book is unique in focussing on China, India and Southeast Asia, rather than just having a sub-regional or country-specific focus. Rigorous empirical analysis is applied to important practical policy issues. The book also provides accessible overviews of recent research relevant to the questions that are explored and is written throughout in a manner that is accessible to policy makers, students and business/financial journalists.

Book excerpt: This publication provides updated statistics on a comprehensive set of economic, financial, social, and environmental measures as well as select indicators for the Sustainable Development Goals. The report covers the 49 regional members of ADB. It discusses trends in development progress and the challenges to inclusive and sustainable development that are likely to be amplified by the effects of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. To put into practice the "leave no one behind" principle of the SDGs, the availability of more detailed and informative data is crucial. The report is accompanied by a special supplement, Mapping Poverty through Data Integration and Artificial Intelligence. This explores how poverty estimates can be enhanced by integrating household surveys and censuses with data extracted from satellite imagery to provide more detailed guidance for policy makers.
