Book excerpt: Quality has been around for years-why would it need to be unleashed? The truth is, the power of quality comes from actions that stem from behaviors-behaviors that apply to every department within a company. In other words, a company's culture. For years, these behaviors have been restrained. Quality has been focused in segments of a company's population, rather than applied to every department from top to bottom. This is where most companies fail in their deployment of quality-by not treating it as a cultural imperative. The aim of this book is to provide guidance on how to correct that in your organization. Inside, you'll find what you need to implement a cultural transformation that will drive long-term sustainable growth and improvement to your organization's bottom line. You'll start by learning the aspects of a behavior-based quality culture and how to unleash an organization's potential by adopting and promoting the behaviors and actions associated with compliance, prevention and improvement. Once this is unleashed, real sustainable profit generation begins. You'll then move into how to implement a behavior-based quality culture at your organization. This will include: Recommendations on strategy development. Considerations for organizational structure. How to build metrics by department that drive change. How to maintain a behavior-based culture of quality. Who should read this book? There is truly something in here for everyone. Executives: This book provides foundational knowledge and a how-to approach to unleash quality to achieve bottom-line results. Quality professionals: Use this book as instructional material for staff and managers about the power of quality. Managers: Apply the knowledge from this book to set the pace for a behavior-based quality culture at your organization.

Book excerpt: This book is the result of communications between the world of spirit and the world of matter. These communications reveal that the cellular metamorphosis of Adam, meaning all mankind, is the effect of the transgression of divine law in the Garden of Eden, a garden of spiritual growth. It encompasses all human forms as original sin and causes man to exist within a dual consciousness. This does indeed explain the deviation from harmony, a broken pattern of the monotype energy force, which reversed the thinking process of our consciousness pertaining to the right and left side of the physical brain. It is identified as the primary impulse that set in motion an endless chain reaction. Our supreme consciousness became partly expressed--or, let us say, veiled in the manifestation, which acknowledged thought only pertaining to personal embodiment, the five physical senses. Medical science does acknowledge the fact that man uses only a portion of the physical brain. the unused portion of the brain deals with the portion of our consciousness that is controlled by spiritual energy and left dormant. the uncontrolled vagaries of energy which were the five physical senses divided and separated the consciousness.

A book full of courage, dedication, hope and faith—not just in mankind, but in mankind’s best friend.” —Denis Leary Dog Heroes of September 11th: A Tribute to America’s Search and Rescue Dogs, now in its Tenth Anniversary second edition, is the first and only major publication to salute the canines that served our nation in the recovery missions following the terrorists’ strikes on America. A testament to man’s best friend and his most critical role in American history, this special book pays tribute to seventy-nine canine heroes and their handlers, retelling their heart-stirring stories, and photographically capturing many defining moments of the days that followed September 11, 2001. Award-winning author Nona Kilgore Bauer interviewed each of the handlers who participated in the recovery efforts at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, Shanksville, Penn., and the Fresh Kills landfill, and lovingly retells their stories of heroism and bravery. Recently updated and expanded with over one hundred new pages and more than one hundred fifty new full-color photographs, this book also includes chapters on military working dogs in Iraq and Afghanistan, the therapy dogs who worked at Ground Zero, the SDF’s new National Training Center, and post-9/11 rescue missions at home and abroad. A special section, written by selected 9/11 handlers, pays tributes to their canine partners who passed away after their recovery missions. This book supports the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) in its mission to produce certified search and rescue teams to protect our whole nation, and a portion of the proceeds of Dog Heroes of September 11th benefit the SDF. “This book will touch the soul; highly recommended.” —Library Journal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive exploration of ancient and modern tyranny in the history of political thought. Waller R. Newell argues that modern tyranny and statecraft differ fundamentally from the classical understanding. Newell demonstrates a historical shift in emphasis from the classical thinkers' stress on the virtuous character of rulers and the need for civic education to the modern emphasis on impersonal institutions and cold-blooded political method. By diagnosing the varieties of tyranny from erotic voluptuaries like Nero, the steely determination of reforming conquerors like Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar and modernizing despots such as Napoleon and Ataturk to the collectivist revolutions of the Jacobins, Bolsheviks, Nazis and Khmer Rouge, Newell shows how tyranny is every bit as dangerous to free democratic societies today as it was in the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A growing number of people are enraged about the quality and direction of public life, despise politicians, and are desperate for real political change. How can the contemporary neoliberal global political order be challenged and rebuilt in an egalitarian and humanitarian manner? What type of political agency and new political institutions are needed for this? In order to answer these questions, Confrontational Citizenship draws on a broad base of perspectives to articulate the concept of confrontational citizenship. William W. Sokoloff defends extra-institutional and confrontational modes of political activity along with new ways of conceiving political institutions as a way to create political orders accountable to the people. In contrast to many forms of democratic theory, Sokoloff argues that confrontational modes of citizenship (e.g., protest) are good because they increase the accountability of a regime to the people, increase the legitimacy of regimes, lead to improvements in a political order, and serve as a means to vent frustration. The goal is to make the word citizen relevant and dangerous to the settled and closed practices that structure our political world and to provide a hopeful vision of what it means to be politically progressive today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ours is a post-political society that cannot imagine radical change; a ‘one dimensional’ society in which politics is reduced to economic concerns. Paradoxically, however, everybody today is subjected to the imperative of regular radical change. Populations have grown accustomed to the idea that one constantly needs to adapt to radical transformations, modify one’s life strategy in tune with the demands of the market on the one hand and the politics of security on the other. Indeed, the idea that there are unquestionable authorities, the idea of ‘despotism’, no longer refers to exceptional circumstances in which politics is suspended but rather seems to have become normalized as part of daily life. This book aims to articulate the genealogy of the despotism-economy-voluntary servitude nexus focusing on their different constellations in the prism of social theory and political philosophy. As it traces the genealogy of this nexus its concern is the field of formation, intervention and intelligibility that arises when and as the three concepts encounter one another.

The contributors to this volume address this fundamental issue by engaging with the history of ideas regarding democracy, diversity and human nature, from the political thought of Xenophon in ancient Greece to practices of Zapatista governance in modern-day Mexico. Drawn from papers originally presented at the first two meetings of the London Graduate Conference in the History of Political Thought, this volume brings together the innovative contributions of graduate students in the history of political thought and political theory with commentary provided by the fields’ leading scholars to consider this essential question.
