Book excerpt: Under No Child Left Behind, school comparison accountability reports do not indicate how schools contribute to student achievement outcomes over time based on their contexts, student composition, quality of academic processes, and parent involvement levels. This has made it difficult for schools that fail to achieve academic benchmarks to assemble relevant information to help devise strategies for improving practices. This study's purposes were to describe possible (a) value-added effects of parent involvement on ending student achievement levels, and (b) effects of changes in parent involvement over time on student reading and math growth rates. The research design consisted of multilevel repeated-measures analysis of student achievement data, parent involvement and academic indicators assembled over a three-year period. The proposed longitudinal theoretical model was tested with a sample of 14,091 students nested in 197 elementary schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature overwhelmingly supports the benefits of education. Nevertheless, the reality of the modern education system is that all students do not have an equal chance of attaining the education that has so much transformative power. A significant achievement gap between minority and low-income students and their European-American and more affluent peers continues to produce inequalities in the educational and life course outcomes for minority and low-income students throughout the United States. In an effort to address these inequities, federal initiatives have emphasized the role of parents in the education of their children and have included parents in nearly every policy initiative aimed at improving academic achievement for the past 50 years. Even though parent involvement has received tremendous support, there is limited evidence on the specific dimensions of parent involvement that impact academic achievement, the impact of parent involvement on diverse groups, and the impact of parent involvement on the achievement gap. This study utilized the ecological systems theory and Epstein's Theory of Overlapping Spheres to examine the relationship between parent involvement and academic achievement on racially diverse kindergarteners (N=13,655). This study utilized hierarchical linear modeling and data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class (ECLS-K). The dataset was selected because it collects information on parent involvement and academic achievement variables, while the overwhelming majority of datasets focus exclusively on one set of variables. This study found that parent involvement has a tremendous positive impact on both reading and math achievement, but fell short of supporting the notion that all forms of parent involvement are beneficial. Furthermore, this study found significant differences in the relationship between parent involvement and academic achievement by race. After more than a half-century recognizing the importance of parent involvement, we are still at the beginning stages of truly understanding how to unlock the full potential of parent involvement on academic achievement for all learners. This dissertation is a call to all educators, policymakers, and researchers to unlock the full potential of parent involvement to raise academic achievement for all students, with a special emphasis on mitigating the inequities throughout the education system.

Book excerpt: This volume takes an international and multidisciplinary approach to understanding students’ academic achievement. It does so by integrating educational literature with developmental psychology and family studies perspectives. Each of the nine chapters focuses on a particular country: China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, or the United States. It describes the country as a cultural context, examines the current school system and parenting in light of the school system, and provides empirical evidence from that country regarding links between parenting and students’ academic achievement. The book highlights similarities and differences in education and parenting across these nine countries - all varying widely in socioeconomic and cultural factors that affect schools and families. The volume contributes to greater understanding of links between parenting and academic performance in different cultural groups. It sheds light on how school systems and parenting are embedded in larger cultural settings that have implications for students’ educational experiences and academic achievement. As two of the most important contexts in which children and adolescents spend time, understanding how schools and families jointly contribute to academic achievement holds promise for advancing the international agenda of promoting quality education for all.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore principal perceptions regarding parental involvement opportunities and the potential impact these opportunities have on student academic achievement at the middle school level. Data were collected from 82 principals/assistant principals across the state of Pennsylvania utilizing a survey instrument and personal interviews from 10 respondents. As self-reported, participants were divided into two groups: those from middle schools that made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) based upon the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) scores for the 2011-2012 school year (n=47) and those from middle schools that did not meet the requirements for Adequate Yearly Progress (n=35). Participant responses concluded that a variety of parental involvement opportunities are afforded to the parents within the middle schools represented in this study. Further results of this study indicated that more middle school principals/assistant principals from schools that did not make AYP perceived parental involvement to be "Extremely Important" as compared to those participants from schools that made AYP. Vast majority of the participants from both groups perceived parental involvement as having a positive benefit to student academic achievement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a report on the positive impact of parental involvement on their child's academics and on the school at large. Building Parent Engagement in Schools is an introduction to educators, particularly in lower-income and urban schools, who want to promote increased parental engagement in both the classroom and at home—an effort required by provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. It is both an authoritative review of research that confirms the positive impact of parental involvement on student achievement and a guide for implementing proven strategies for increasing that involvement. With Building Parent Engagement in Schools, educators can start to develop a hybrid culture between home and school, so that school can serve as a cultural bridge for the students. Filled with the voices of real educators, students, and parents, the book documents a number of parent-involved efforts to improve low-income communities, gain greater resources for schools, and improve academic achievement. Coverage includes details of real initiatives in action, including programs for home visits, innovative uses of technology, joint enterprises like school/community gardens, and community organization efforts.

Research reviewed all confirm positive correlation and reject the opposite. The key elements include parent involvement, responsibility, and participation in their children's education; collaboration between teacher, parent, student, and school; home learning environment support. Parental involvement is a mixture of dedication and active participation on the part of the parent to the school and to the student. There are many problems concerned with involvement. Many schools simply do not know how to deal with the nontraditional family and the areas of concern that it represents. The number of solutions that can be used to improve parental involvement are extensive. The most important of these, however, is for the school to be totally devoted. When these solutions are implemented the effects are great, especially for the student."--leaf 4.

Book excerpt: "This research study examined the correlation between student achievement and parent's [sic] perceptions of their involvement in their child's schooling. Parent participants completed the Parent Involvement Project Parent Questionnaire. Results slightly indicated parents of students with higher level of achievement perceived less demand or invitations from their child and that students with higher levels of academic achievement had parents who felt they had the time, energy, or skills to assist with school related activities. The results strongly indicate that students with higher levels of achievement had parents who reported higher levels of involvement in school related activities."--Page 4

They are faced with the dilemma of addressing these issues and, in addition, surviving with declining state and district funding. Schools ponder what strategies and practices are effective to increase student achievement. What should be the focus and what practices have the strongest impact on student achievement? This study examined the relationship of the use of parent involvement strategies and school performance and how contextual factors affected this relationship. A principal inventory was sent to 110 schools to assess their parent involvement practices. The analyses specified the parent involvement strategies and contextual factors that improved student achievement. Conclusions, implications for schools and universities, and future research are discussed. This book is an essential tool for school administrators, school boards, teachers, parents, universities, researchers, community members and all those interested in school reform.
