Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to measure the levels of vicarious trauma and its impact on social workers resilience. This study examined the relationship between the vicarious trauma experienced by these individuals in their capacity as child welfare workers and their resiliency to vicarious trauma. The researchers' hypothesis was that a positive relationship between vicarious trauma and resilience exists because vicarious trauma can lead to resilience. The researchers distributed two surveys to child welfare social workers employed by a child protective service organization in a large metropolitan area. The objectives of the two surveys were to assess the level of vicarious trauma by using the secondary traumatic stress and assess the levels of resilience. The two surveys were necessary to be able to assess the level of vicarious trauma they have experienced by using the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale and the level of resiliency using the Connor Davidson Brief Resiliency Scale. The results of the surveys showed that there is a correlation between avoidance, intrusion and resilience; the higher the intrusion and avoidance, the lower the resilience.

The purpose of this project was to examine the perceptions of social workers on vicarious trauma among child welfare social workers in Sacramento and Solano counties. Thirty-five participants voluntarily agreed to complete an online questionnaire on the topic. Study findings indicate that stress and symptoms of vicarious trauma are perceived by professional social workers to be highly prevalent among child welfare workers. Social workers reported observing specific symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, headaches, irritability, decreased work performance and having learned of symptoms such as insomnia, digestive issues, nightmares and aggression. An important finding was the abysmal lack of training and resources for managing vicarious traumatization among social workers. Trauma-specific education may diminish the potential of vicarious trauma and reduce worker turn-over thus preventing drain of well trained child worker professionals. This is particularly relevant in the resource constraint environment such as the currently prevailing circumstances in California where the Child Protection System has lost many social workers' positions due to budget cuts.

Book excerpt: This quantitative correlational study explored if and to what extent pre-existing health conditions, resilience and coping mechanisms moderated the relationship between job-related stress reactions and mental health outcomes in child protective services social workers. The most challenging clients are victims of trauma, and professionals who work with trauma survivors are at risk of experiencing job-related stress reactions which can be harmful to their overall health. Ann Masten’s variable-focused model of resilience theory guided this study, which involved ninety-six child protective services social workers, supervisors, managers, and directors in North Carolina. Data was collected through a survey which involved demographic questionnaire with a screening for pre-existing health conditions and five instruments: The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Medical Outcomes Scale, Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale, Vicarious Trauma Scale, and Brief Resilient Coping Scale. Hayes PROCESS macro was used to analyze data to determine the moderation between variables. Results of the analysis found resilience to correlate with mental health outcomes and resilient coping to correlate with job-related stress reactions; however, no moderators were statistically significant. Future research may consider obtaining information on the effects of adversity by exploring secondary trauma in child protective services social workers and how these professionals persevere through the trauma.

This study tested 11 hypotheses regarding the relationship between empathy and the level of VT, and nine hypotheses were confirmed. Implications, limitations, and future direction are also discussed.

Measures used were the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL) and the Secondary Trauma Stress Scale (STSS); scores obtained were compared with results of other professional groups reported in external studies. Significant evidence of trauma was found for the workers in this study: secondary traumatic stress subscores (ProQOL) were significantly higher than those reported for a sample of certified professionals in other social service fields. Also, 28.6% of study subjects were in the "Severe STS" category (STSS), and the total score was significantly higher than that reported for an external sample of professionals working with adult victims of family violence or sexual assault. Though burnout subscores (ProQOL) were related to years in current position, the correlation was only of borderline statistical significance. Workers' reported strategies for coping with the negative effects of this work included self-care, debriefing with colleagues and supervisors and limiting caseloads. It is recommended that agencies focus more on sensitizing workers to vicarious traumatization and educating them on methods of self-care. New strategies (e.g., a meditation zone, yoga, group therapy, team support) might also be helpful in dealing with this problem." --

This study reviewed different protective factors for children and how these factors positively impacts a child's resiliency. There have been a number of studies that will be discussed in this literature review that have shown that if early intervention is put into place and protective factors are placed into a child's life the end result will be much better compared to children who do not receive interventions. The literature that was reviewed proved that children who had at least one stable and nurturing adult would be more resilient then a child who did not. The studies also stated that children who participated in extracurricular activities and were active in the community would be more resilient regardless of the trauma they experience. In this literature review several articles were reviewed that examined how a child living in foster home views the child welfare agency and how they feel about foster homes. Another article discussed the necessity of having all child-serving agencies be trained in a trauma-informed approach. This article gave insight to social workers in the field on the importance of working collaboratively with other child-serving agencies. The ultimate goal is to protect the child from having to relive the trauma and to minimize the long term effects as much as possible. The research studies reviewed in this paper support the theory that children can be resilient regardless of the trauma they have experienced. This study provides reason on why social workers should never give up on a child regardless of their past and that although it may seem difficult at the time, to always remember that one person can make a lifetime impact on a child.
