Book Synopsis The Concept of Self by : Richard L. Allen
Download or read book The Concept of Self written by Richard L. Allen and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Institutional racism has had a major impact on the development of African American self-esteem and group identity. Through the years, African Americans have developed strong, tenacious concepts of self partially based on African cultural and philosophical retentions and as a reaction to historical injustices. The Concept of Self examines the historical basis for the widely misunderstood ideas of how African Americans think of themselves individually, and how they relate to being part of a group that has been subjected to challenges of their very humanity. Richard Allen examines past scholarship on African American identity to explore a wide range of issues leading to the formation of an individual and collective sense of self. Allen traces the significance of social forces that have impinged on the lives of African Americans and points to the uniqueness of their position in American society. He then focuses on the results from the National Survey of Black Americans-a national survey of African Americans on a wide range of political, social, and psychological issues-to develop a model of African self. Allen explores the idea of double-consciousness as put forth by W.E.B. DuBois against the more recent debates of Afrocentricity or an African-centered consciousness. He proposes a set of interrelated hypotheses regarding how African Americans might use an African worldview for the upliftment of Africans in the Diaspora. The Concept of Self will interest students and scholars of African American studies, sociology and population studies.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars within the field of African/Black Psychology argue that racial oppression negatively impacts African American psychological well-being. A large body of research exists supporting the claim that race-related stress is associated with poor mental health outcomes. Some Black psychologists contend that African self-consciousness is central to healthy psychological functioning suggesting that disordered Black personality results from the impact of racism on African Americans’ African self-consciousness. Lastly, when examining the psychosocial development of African American college students’ researchers often make comparisons between student experiences based on Academic Institution. The current study utilized Pearson’s correlations, hierarchical multiple regressions, and an independent samples T-test to investigate the roles that race-related stress, African self-consciousness and Academic Institution have on depression among African American collegians. The sample consisted of 167 Black college students (117 women and 50 males) recruited from a Predominately White institution (PWI) (111 participants) and a Historically Black College/Institution (HBCU) (56 participants). Results revealed total race-related stress and cultural racism significantly predicted depression. Additionally, African self-consciousness (ASCS) moderated the relationship between individual racism and depression such that, higher levels of ASCS eliminated the relationship between individual racism and depression for this sample. These findings suggest the need to further examine the unique impact of cultural, individual and institutional racism on mental health outcomes of African American collegians, along with various factors that influence these relationships. Implications of these findings for university personnel and mental health professionals are identified.

Book excerpt: Studying the self-esteem of African American college students attending Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) helps us understand how African American students function in situations when their minority status is pronounced. A small number of African Americans enroll in colleges and universities, with a smaller, yet rising percentage attending PWIs (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). This study examines the self-esteem of the small population of African American students who attend a PWI. Tinto's Theory of Student Departure and Uncertainty Reduction Theory provided a framework for the study. A survey was distributed to identify levels of self-esteem of these students, examine group membership and its relation to self-esteem, and analyze positive and negative experiences while attending a PWI. A total of 68 African American students across 22 universities participated in the study. The findings indicate self-esteem was slightly higher than normal and esteem did not significantly differ by group membership. A content analysis of responses identified 14 themes present in the experiences that update and add to our understanding of the African American experience in a PWI.

Paradoxically, the collection presents measurable and qualitative research, in order to flush out a global Pan–Africanist consciousness.
