Based on evidentiary studies, major depression in either parent can interfere with parenting quality and increase the risk of children developing mental, behavioral and social problems. Depression in Parents, Parenting, and Children highlights disparities in the prevalence, identification, treatment, and prevention of parental depression among different sociodemographic populations. It also outlines strategies for effective intervention and identifies the need for a more interdisciplinary approach that takes biological, psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and social contexts into consideration. A major challenge to the effective management of parental depression is developing a treatment and prevention strategy that can be introduced within a two-generation framework, conducive for parents and their children. Thus far, both the federal and state response to the problem has been fragmented, poorly funded, and lacking proper oversight. This study examines options for widespread implementation of best practices as well as strategies that can be effective in diverse service settings for diverse populations of children and their families. The delivery of adequate screening and successful detection and treatment of a depressive illness and prevention of its effects on parenting and the health of children is a formidable challenge to modern health care systems. This study offers seven solid recommendations designed to increase awareness about and remove barriers to care for both the depressed adult and prevention of effects in the child. The report will be of particular interest to federal health officers, mental and behavioral health providers in diverse parts of health care delivery systems, health policy staff, state legislators, and the general public.

Book excerpt: Although there is evidence that children of depressed parents are far more likely to suffer from depression than other children (Hammen & Brennan, 2003), the majority of research examining links between parents' depression and adolescent depression has focused on maternal depression, minimizing or ignoring the potential influence of paternal depression. Thus, the goals of the proposed study were 1) to examine both maternal and paternal depressive symptoms in relation to adolescents' depressive symptoms over time, 2) to explore possible gender differences in how teens are affected by maternal versus paternal depressive symptoms, and 3) to investigate the role of parent-teen relationship quality. This study used data from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, which includes measures of each parents' depressive symptoms, taken when children were in 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 10th grades, and adolescent depressive symptoms measured at grades 5, 6, and 10. Results of path analyses using a cross-lagged panel design revealed that paternal depressive symptoms significantly predicted changes in adolescent depressive symptoms from grade 5 to 6 and 6 to grade 10. Although maternal depressive symptoms were not significantly associated with female adolescents' depressive symptoms, mothers' depressive symptoms predicted male adolescents' depressive symptoms at grade 5. Models revealed a reciprocal influence of female adolescents' depressive symptoms and paternal depressive symptoms. Furthermore, models of indirect effects suggest that the relationship of maternal depressive symptoms at grade 3 and male teens' depressive symptoms had an enduring effect on males' depressive symptoms through grades 6 and 10. This was also found for the association of paternal depressive symptoms and subsequent female teens' symptoms. Finally, moderation analyses revealed a significant interaction of maternal depressive symptoms and mother-teen relationship quality predicting female teens' subsequent depressive symptoms such that females who had high-quality relationships with highly depressed mothers were more likely to be depressed themselves, whereas female teens' depressive symptoms were lowest if they had high quality relationships with mothers who reported low levels of depressive symptoms. The present study highlights the need for systems-based approaches to working with families in which one or more family members experience depressive symptoms.

There may be fits of defiance or rage and sometimes withdrawal into a numb, sullen silence. A child in this state tries the patience of parents and siblings. Remedies of every sort are tried, including gifts, punishments, bribes, lectures, pleading, and a host of others. Such efforts occasionally provide temporary relief, but more often they seem to make matters worse. Commonly, there is an emotional wall of anger and frustration between a depressed child and other fumily members that may inevitably lead to further isolation and withdrawal. If too much time passes without their being helped, many depressed children and adolescents come to believe that suicide offers the only real relief for their pain. Currently, there is a Depression Awareness Week that includes free screening at participating health and mental health settings around the United States and is designed to identify depression in adults, suggesting that society's awareness of depression and psychiatric disorders is focused to a large extent on adults.

Book excerpt: Adolescent depression is a serious mental health problem, because it is both an externalizing and internalizing disorder. Understanding the etiology of depression is important when examining which causal variables are applicable to adolescents. The models of adolescent depression for which there is the most empirical support are: genetic, biological, stress, and the impact of puberty (Garber, 2000; Lewinsohn & Essau, 2002). However, results have been mixed with which variables are more causal, except for female gender showing higher indices o f depression than male gender. Few studies have explored variables of race and ethnicity, such as acculturation and racial identity, as indices for higher rates of depression among adolescents. The purpose of the present study is to examine clinical depression in African American and Latino American adolescents. The research design of this study is Quasi-Experimental. The study will utilize the Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition (DSM-IV), Childhood version (KID-SCID) and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), as well as the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM), the Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire-Revised version (ATQ-R), and the Children's Somatization Inventory (CSI), for the purpose of highlighting similarities and differences across gender and racial/ethnic variables. This study will explore the potential value of the descriptive measures o f depression, by utilizing the SCID and BDI, to examine depressive symptomatology among these populations. This present study will further assess other variables that may be significant contributors to depression among these populations by utilizing the MEIM, ATQ-R, and the CSI, to assess racial and ethnic positive identity, cognitive patterns, and somatization of distress. The intended contribution of this study is to help future psychologists continue to develop treatment methods that are culturally and racially sensitive in therapy specialized to meet the diverse needs o f all adolescents. Funding for this study will be sought from the Center for Mental Health Services' Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services for Children and Their Families Program, which offers a grant through the National Institute of Mental Health at 50,000 direct costs per year, limited to two years total.
