Previous research has demonstrated strong relationships between disciplinary events and academic performance, as well as between academic performance and academic motivation. However, there is limited understanding of the relationship between academic motivation and disciplinary events, or how academic motivation, academic performance, and disciplinary events are related. The purpose of this study was to examine student self-ratings of their academic motivation in grades 9-12 in a public high school, and to investigate the associations and interactive relationships between these three variables. Participants (N=78) completed the Academic Resilience Scale School (Cassidy, 2016) and school records were accessed for data on disciplinary events and academic performance. Using linear regression, the relationships between disciplinary events and academic performance, academic motivation and academic performance, and disciplinary events and academic motivation were analyzed. It was shown that disciplinary events were significantly associated with lower ratings of academic motivation and lower academic performance. Higher academic motivation was significantly associated with higher academic performance. Additionally, academic motivation was found to be a significant partial mediator on the relationship between disciplinary events and academic performance. Students who had disciplinary events, but reported high academic motivation, were found to have higher academic performance than students who reported lower academic motivation. Limitations of the study, implications for the field, and future directions will also be discussed.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The present study sought to examine the relationship between victimization by peers in middle school and academic outcomes. it was expected that an association between the experience of victimization and diminished academic performance would be mediated by poor psychological outcomes, as measured by moodiness, depression, anxiety, and anger. additionally, it was hypothesized that academic outcomes could be divided into two distinct constructs, motivation and achievement, with motivation and academic goal-orientation variables preceding the adequate attainment of school grades and standardized test scores. therefore, the present mediated model was tested using a structural equation modeling technique: victimization-psychological functioning-academic motivation-academic achievement. additionally, it was hypothesized that certain factors (friendship, prosocial activities and influences, school climate, aggression, and teacher-reported difficulties) would moderate the victimization-psychological functioning pathway. victimized middle school boys and girls were expected to have varying psychological and emotional outcomes depending on proposed risk and protective factors. approximately equal numbers of males and females (n=145 and 181, respectively) were randomly selected from classrooms in 11 middle schools across 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Students completed questionnaires that assessed hypothesized mediator and moderator variables. In addition, teachers of the selected classrooms completed a brief rating scale on each of the students, which assessed student moodiness, behavioral difficulties, and learning problems. Achievement and discipline records data were obtained. Results revealed that Psychological Functioning mediated the relationship between Victimization and Academic Motivation, which was then related directly to Academic Achievement. Only the Aggression and Climate constructs moderated the Victimization-Psychological Functioning pathway, with Climate factors additionally significant for boys. These results suggest that victimization is associated with poor motivation to achieve if victimized students also experience psychological difficulties. Limited motivation is then associated with poorer academic performance. Contrary to hypothesized associations, endorsing aggressive beliefs and behaviors and experiencing low levels of intervention and support at school against bullying, particularly for boys, were related to better emotional outcomes for students who are highly victimized. While statistically significant, these findings have limited effect sizes. Implications for future research and the development of school-based programming are discussed.

Book excerpt: Students who have experienced early childhood adversity, such as maltreatment or witnessing violence, tend to have lower academic achievement compared to their peers (Bethell et al., 2014; Crozier & Barth, 2005). However, the underlying mechanisms driving these differential outcomes are largely unexplored. Academic engagement, a multidimensional construct that is associated with positive academic outcomes (Fredricks et al., 2004), maybe one such mechanism. Academic engagement is thought to be malleable and to develop through student-context interactions (Fredricks et al., 2004; Skinner et al., 2009). The purpose of the present study is to examine the potential mediation effect of academic engagement on the relationship between experiencing childhood adversity and academic outcomes for adolescents. The present study also explored the potential effects of parent-child and teacher-student relationship quality on the development of academic engagement. Results indicated that academic engagement did not mediate the relationship between experiencing adversity and reading achievement and that parent-child relationship quality and teacher-student relationship quality did not moderate the effect of adversity on academic engagement. However, teacher-student relationship quality did significantly predict academic engagement. These results suggest that teacher-student relationships are especially important in the development of engagement for students who have experienced early childhood adversity. Previous research on engagement in this population focuses largely on engagement as an outcome. The present study contributes to the literature because it examined engagement as a process, offering future researchers an opportunity to better understand the antecedents and consequences of these students engagement. This understanding could further inform the development of effective interventions for these students.

The study also examined differences in these impacts among various student subgroups. Using discipline referral data entered into the West Virginia Education Information System for the 2012-2013 school year and employing cross tabulations and binary logistic regression procedures, the odds of scoring below proficiency on WESTEST 2 based on disciplinary involvement and student characteristics were determined. Findings were essentially the same for math and reading/language arts, so results focus only on math. Of 160,480 students in the analysis, about 29.6% had one or more referrals for inappropriate behaviors. Overall about 12% had only a single referral, 10.4% had 2 to 4 referrals, and 6.7% had 5 or more. Results include the following: (1) Students with one or more discipline referrals were 2.4 times more likely to score below proficiency in math than those with no discipline referrals; math proficiency among these students exhibited a 40 percentage point deficit (29.7% vs. 70.3%); (2) As the number of discipline referrals increased so did the odds of poor academic performance. Students with 2 to 4 referrals were 2.7 more likely to score below proficiency; students with 5 or more were 4.6 more likely. Students with a single discipline referral saw a 25 percentage point proficiency gap, while 2 to 4 referrals added another 20 points and 5 or more referrals added yet another 20 points; (3) When the disciplinary consequences take the form of in-school or out-of-school suspension, the risk of scoring below proficiency increases and proficiency gaps widen; (4) Students with disabilities who had a single discipline referral were no more likely to score below proficiency than students with disabilities without discipline referrals. However, when they received 2 to 4 referrals they were 3.7 more likely to score below proficiency; with 5 or more discipline referrals they were 12 times more likely; (5) Low income students with a single discipline referral were 1.48 times more likely to score below proficiency than low income students with no referrals; those with 5 or more were 3.25 more likely; and (6) While previous studies showed Black students to be at greater risk of receiving discipline referrals and suspensions, no interaction was found between disciplinary involvement and race relative to academic performance. Recommendations include: (1) encourage diligence in accurately reporting discipline behaviors as required by Policy 4373; (2) provide training/technical assistance specific to positive discipline approaches and alternatives to suspension; (3) build district and school staff capacity to provide appropriate behavioral interventions via the Support for Personalized Learning three-tiered framework; and (4) further investigate subgroup disparities and deliver professional development and technical assistance to minimize them.

Book excerpt: This dissertation utilizes data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) to investigate the relationship between school discipline (specifically, suspension and expulsion) and the academic achievement of non-punished students. Previous sociological research has identified negative outcomes for students who face direct punishment in schools. Recent studies have also shown a similar relationship between school discipline and non-punished students. Scholars suggest that this association may be attributed to the broader social environment created by the use of punishment, leading to the establishment of a "punitive environment" within schools. Consequently, punitive environments could extend the detrimental effects of school discipline to all students. However, the dimensions of this relationship and the theory of punitive environments require further exploration.This study aims to address this research gap by examining various measures that can better identify punitive environments and track the association between punishment and the educational outcomes of non-punished students. To achieve this goal, a combination of multilevel and social network analysis is employed, considering measures at the individual, school, and network levels. The analysis reveals that school-level measures reflecting actual disciplinary practices are more effective in describing punitive environments than measures based on disciplinary policies. Additionally, measures considering the relative exposure to punishment through peer networks offer valuable insights into punitive environments beyond school-level measures. Recommendations for future research includes replication with a more representative sample as well as further examination of network measures as they moderate the relationship between punishment and educational outcomes of all students.

However, some students find it hard to make choices about courses and some even question why they are still at school. Developing and maintaining motivation and engagement appear to be the central tasks that can improve chances of future success. Teachers, parents and students themselves need a better understanding of the nature of motivation and how it can facilitate engagement over the final years of secondary education. The main purpose of the current thesis was to investigate the nature of and changes in motivation and how they are associated with engagement in learning in the college years. This study followed students from Years 10 to 11 and 12 and asked them to report on multiple facets of motivation and engagement in each year. In the first aspect of the study, factor analyses demonstrated that 11 factors described by Martin (2007), in his Student Motivation and Engagement Scale (SMES-HS), offer an adequate model to understand student motivation and engagement for each gender and in each year. This enabled a detailed study of the relationships between various motivational facets of engagement or disengagement in each year. The concurrent associations showed coherent patterns of adaptive cognitions and behaviours at all times, whereas the patterns of maladaptive cognitions and behaviours were less coherent. The associations between cognitions and behaviours were lower than the associations between cognitions or between behaviours. The second aspect of this study examined the longitudinal relationships between all 11 aspects of motivation and engagement. Results showed moderate to strong stability of motivational facets over the three years. Adaptive cognitions appeared more stable than other facets in boys; anxiety and self-handicapping in girls. Finally, the third aspect of the study examined how high or low the motivation was that students reported. Interestingly, the levels of adaptive cognitions were consistently high across the final three years of school, levels of adaptive behaviours moderately high and levels of maladaptive motivation and behaviours consistently low. Boys' reports showed high levels of disengagement while girls' reports showed high levels of anxiety. The present study demonstrates that the SMES-HS is an adequate tool to examine student motivation and engagement of college students over time. It has given insight into the complex motivational experiences of more engaged students. Further research is required to pursue this initial understanding of motivational orientations of college students by including students with both high and very low levels of motivation over time. Knowing the overall patterns of relationships between the motivational facets can assist students, teachers and parents in early identification of students at risk in the process of learning. Educators and parents can design specific intervention programs targeting individual facets of motivation to promote students' motivation and engagement in the college years. Limitations of the current study are discussed and recommendations for future research are presented.

This study expanded on these studies by examining the relationship of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation within the context of lower and upper primary school classrooms. One issue that has received minimal attention is the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and academic achievement in young students. In order to examine this relationship, students completed a motivation questionnaire (Academic Motivation Scale), as well as a Standardised Academic Test (State-wide Government Year 3 & 7 Tests). Correlational analysis identified the relationship between these constructs and was used to examine the connection between students' gender and motivational orientation. It was hypothesised that students operating from the intrinsic motivation perspective, are more likely to be high achievers within their year level. It was furthermore hypothesised that students in the lower year level would show higher levels of intrinsic motivation and as students progressed through primary school intrinsic motivation levels would decline while extrinsic motivation would increase. The results of this research study concluded that high academic achievers operated with high levels of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The study also discovered that there is a decline in both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation as students progress through their primary education.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore connections among student perceptions of specific school climate-factors, self-determined academic motivation, and academic outcomes in a sample of middle and high school students (sixth through eleventh grade). Structural equation modeling techniques were used to identify meaningful grade specific associations within a sample of 2,463 students. The school climate factors of perceived teacher support, peer support, and school bullying emerged as the most salient school climate-based predictors of academic motivation factors. Perceived teacher support positively predicted academic competence and relatedness, whereas school bullying negatively predicted relatedness. Student academic competence, in turn, was found to negatively predict amotivation and to positively predict of GPA, after controlling for previous standardized test scores. Results were found to be consistent across grades. The implications of these findings in regards to school stakeholder practices and future research directions within the school climate and academic motivation literature bases are discussed.
