Book excerpt: Abstract: With the majority of Latina/o students entering higher education through the community college, and Latino males lagging in degree attainment rates, there is a need to focus on the Latino male population and their success. This study examines the transfer aspirations of Latino males in pre-baccalaureate education in the California Community College system. Findings from t -tests, factor analyses, and a logistic regression model suggest that there are differences between non-pre-baccalaureate and pre-baccalaureate Latino males related to financial aid, social interaction, and institutional commitment and fit. In addition to these differences, the logistic regression model demonstrated age, source of tuition, satisfaction with credit assistance, and satisfaction with the computer lab as being significant factors contributing toward transfer aspirations. Recommendations were made to streamline and improve policies and practices to better serve the pre-baccalaureate Latino male population.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This quantitative study examined the transfer and degree aspirations of African-American and Latino males enrolled in California community colleges. Carter's (2002) theoretical and conceptual framework on the degree aspirations of African-American and Latino students was utilized to frame this study. Using secondary data from CCSSE, t-tests, factor analyses and logistic regression analyses were completed to compare the experiences of African American and Latino males and predict their transfer and degree aspirations. Findings include that self-reported data on GPA, obtaining or updating job skills, changing careers, and institutional size were predictors of associate degree aspirations. For the outcome transfer aspirations, predictors were race, sources used to pay for their tuition, and experiences that contributed to their academic, cognitive, and technical skills at the community college. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.

Book excerpt: The majority of California's students seeking higher education are enrolled in a community college and approximately a third are Latino. Yet as the number of Latinos in community colleges has risen, their degree completion and transfer rates lag in comparison to other major ethnic groups. To investigate the academic aspirations and barriers of community college students, this mixed-methods case study focused on Latinos in a specialized learning community for students entering their first year. This research employed pre and post surveys among approximately 280 students enrolled in a first year learning community at a large urban community college in Southern California. Interviews were conducted with thirty-one students who were enrolled and successfully completed courses in the first year learning community. Additional students were interviewed who had previously been affiliated with the learning community but did not successfully complete their courses and were no longer enrolled. Interviews were also conducted with students who had successfully completed their second year at the community college and were employed in the specialized learning community as a Peer Assistant. Findings demonstrate that students held greater aspirations to transfer than to complete an Associate or Vocational degree. The majority of participants from all student cohorts expressed aspirations to transfer to a public university. Although the surveys and interviews provided insight into students' aspirations, the cohort of first year students appeared to lack specific knowledge about which academic pathway led to their desired degree or career. These students all reported complex barriers in balancing financial and personal responsibilities with their academic workload. Students who had participated in the matriculation process and received early academic planning through the learning community programming held more realistic perceived timelines to transfer, highlighting the importance of early access to counselors and academic planning to help students' overcome institutional barriers. The majority of participants struggled to reach college transferable "gatekeeper" courses, where most students were placed in developmental English and Mathematics courses in their first semester. The study concludes with recommendations for future research and improved practices to address the high aspirations towards transfer and barriers that students face at community colleges.

This study strives to offer insights concerning the questions: (a) what behavioral patterns of current family, peers, and conditions in school have influenced the educational decisions of these Mexican American males? and (b) what social conditions motivate these Mexican American males to seek and achieve higher education despite adversity? This qualitative research was also aimed at establishing and understanding how a selected number of Mexican American males have achieved academic success. The researcher chose 10 men with either an associate of arts or an associate of science degrees for an in-depth interview and used a semi-structured interview guide in an effort to prompt oral discourse. The interviewer posed questions concerning academic conditions, family impact, college environment, and financial issues. The responses to the questions led to similar themes involved in these students' course completion and graduation. The researcher used a theoretical framework using Bandura's Social Learning Theory (1977) in which he suggests that not only environmental factors, but motivational factors along with self-regulatory mechanisms affect an individual's behavior. This research illustrated the conditions that facilitated reaching the participant's educational goal and mission, which was to complete a two-year degree at the community college. The inquiry examined the behavioral patterns that have been an influence on the educational decisions of these Mexican American males, and what social conditions have motivated them to seek and achieve higher education despite adversity.

These gaps exist across higher education. They are undeniable and unacceptable. Men of color have high aspirations when they begin higher education. Why are these aspirations not matched by similarly high outcomes? Until higher education institutions fully embrace the charge of eliminating this disparity, we cannot effectively serve our students, our communities, our national economy, or our democracy. There are two reasons that community colleges can--and should--take the lead in this work. Book excerpt: Brief Literature Review: The Latino population is the fastest growing group in the nation, demands further consideration in academic research as well as a place in higher education (Brown, Santiago, & Lopez, 2003). The number of Latino students earning a bachelor's degree increased by 105% from 1990 to 2000 (NCES, 2003). But only 18.6% of these students achieved their goal of receiving a bachelor's degree within 8 years compared to 37.5% of Caucasian students (Swail, Cabrera, & Lee, 2004). This statistic becomes even more alarming when gender is considered; Latino males are more underrepresented in colleges compared to their Latina counterparts (NCES, 2003; Bailey, Jeong & Cho, 2010). Statement of the Problem: This research explores how family members, higher education personnel and peers supported Latino males transferring from a community college into a four year university. Using the following questions this study aims to understand the barriers, achievements and persistence of Latino male students who have historically been underrepresented in higher education, and are now becoming part of the rising number of ethnically diverse groups at colleges and universities. 1. What role does family play in supporting Latino male transfer students' in succeeding in higher education? 2. What role do higher education programs and the institution play in supporting Latino male transfer students' persistence in higher education? 3. What role do peers play in supporting Latino male transfer students' persistence in higher education? Methodology: This qualitative study attend to the ways in which academic, family and social factors impact Latino male students' success through the lived experiences of six Latino male transfer students. The author proceeded to analyze the data in order to determine common themes and experiences of Latino male students in higher education. Conclusion and Recommendations: This study concluded that Latino males who successfully transferred to Northern California University shared certain characteristics and experiences. Although Latino males experienced obstacles and challenges in academia, the support of family and the development of a sense of belonging in college appear to key to their academic success. It is the intention of this study for the result to be used by administrators and policy makers in order to create and maintain initiatives that speak to the needs of minority students and with special attention to the missing Latino male in higher education.

Hidden Hills College (HHC; pseudonym) is a large California community college located in an urban setting in Southern California. HHC is primarily a commuter campus and a Hispanic serving institution, regionally accredited by Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). This qualitative study included 22 interviews of currently enrolled students at HHC. The participants, selected based on the sampling criteria, consist of Latino males who had completed at least 24 units and were seeking an AA/AS or transfer to a 4-year institution (California State University, University of California, private). The students were between the ages of 18- 4. Additionally, through the literature review, aspirations, familial support, persistence, and challenges were summarized and analyzed, which provided an opportunity to learn about the different contributing factors that support or hinder the transfer or degree attainment of Latino males. The major findings showed that in relation to challenges experienced by LMS in the pursuit for an associate degree or transfer to a 4-year institution are cultural expectations, parents lack of understanding, financial hardship, lack of time, and lack of academic preparation. The study also revealed that in relation to strategies used by LMS in their efforts to pursue an associate degree or transfer to a 4-year institution are aspirations for a better future, family support, motivation, and campus resources. Recommendation for policy and practice focused on improving and promoting higher education for Latino males, as well as recommendations for further studies are presented.

Book excerpt: This project uses a mixed-methods approach to examine the postsecondary pathways of Mexican-origin and Latino/a youth. First, I conducted three waves of interviews with 50 Latino/a youth over a period of two years. Findings from interview data indicate that my respondents followed the "college-for-all" ethos in formulating their educational aspirations. However, these mostly low-income respondents also managed their aspirations and expectations in reaction to anticipated constraints of family and limited financial resources, leading them to vary in their level of commitment to college attainment (Morgan 2005). Findings further suggest that the influences of family and culture result in a gendered familism and a double-edged role of family among Latino/a youth, in which girls express an enhanced sense of duty to family through their greater propensity to enroll in four-year colleges and focus on lucrative careers. Boys also report that their families expect college attendance, but acknowledge a greater variety of pathways through which they might express family support. These qualitative findings informed the development of a model of the transition to college among students of Mexican descent using the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS). While females of all racial/ethnic groups are increasingly more likely than similar males to complete four-year degrees, the gender gap differs across groups, suggesting that different causal factors may be at work. I find that the amount and type of resources available to students, as well as the constraints they face, vary by gender and ethnic/racial group, via cultural influences that affect students' and families' interpretation of risk and reward in the educational decision-making process. These variations result in gender differences in postsecondary outcomes by racial/ethnic group.

Lastly, the second interview explored what these Latino males believe should be done to further advance the academic success of future Latino students and what they believed their role was in assisting. The study examined three (3) research questions: 1. What factors influenced the educational trajectory and professional success of Latino male educational leaders in Yolo County? 2. How did social capital (i.e. their involvement in specific networks or their relationships with individuals) contribute to their academic attainment and professional career? 3. How do these educational leaders view their role in advancing the success of Latino males? Nine themes emerged from this study: a) Having high expectations from parents and family. b) Receiving support and guidance from key educational figures. c) Seeing education as a way to improve the quality of life for themselves and future Latino students. d) Having the passion to learn as well as to educate others. e) Mentoring for attaining goals. f) Access to networks and connections. g) Developing knowledge and capabilities of Latinos through quality education. h) Being a role model to the Latino males. i) Ensuring the availability of a network and support system. The overarching research question of the study asks: what are the educational and counseling experiences of low-income, first-generation Latino/a community college students? Additionally, four sub-questions are explored through the perspectives of student participants and community college counselor participants. First, the study examines the academic aspirations and achievements of these students. Second, it explores the value they place on a community college education. Third, it explores the influence community college counselors exert over student-stated academic aspirations and achievements. Fourth, it explores the conditions students and counselors identify as attributing to the academic success and failure of low-income, first-generation, Latino/a community college students. A mixed-methods explanatory sequential approach was utilized to execute, inform, and guide the study. One hundred and five student participants completed a researcher-developed survey and 22 students were interviewed. Twenty-seven counselors completed a researcher-developed survey and 20 were interviewed. Fifteen salient themes with 35 descriptors emerged. Policy and practitioner recommendations are suggested. The study responds to the literature documenting chronic and persistent educational underachievement found within low-income, first-generation, Latino/a community college student populations. The research is of particular interest because over the past 100 years the community college system has played a central role in educating members of historically marginalized student populations, and it is commonly perceived that the community college system is an open-access, unfettered portal of entry to postsecondary opportunities. The general belief is that anyone is able to obtain a college education; therefore, failure at the community college on the behalf of a student is often interpreted as a personal student failing rather than the result of an inequitable educational structure (Rhoades, 2012). The study informs and contributes to the understanding of what lies at the crossroads of aspiration and achievement for low-income, first-generation, Latino/a community college students. The study findings have implications for future developments of policies and student-counselor strategies that can mitigate the educational marginalization of the growing low-income, first-generation, Latino/a community college student population.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to understand how 13 Latino male students acquire and make sense of gang and college knowledge in one alternative/continuation schools in Rock County School District. Less than 45 percent of Latino males graduate from public schools in that state of the study (Schott Foundation for Public Education, 2015). Using Bourdieu's (1980, 1990) cultural capital and habitus and Coleman's (1988, 1990) social capital theories serves as a combined lens to consider how Latino males are taught how to perform in an appropriate or expected fashion in their communities, accrue benefits in their various social networks, and understand how these individuals' social histories and experiences influences aspirations and expectations for their future. Findings suggest that 10 of the 13 students are more aware of gang membership requirements than college admission criteria. Ten of the 13 students want to attend a technical or vocational college and four-year universities. Most students believe their only college financing options are working full-time and/or student loans. Only two students mentioned a teacher, counselors, or school administrator trying to actively help them prepare or share college information. The results of the study can help high school college counselors, college outreach professionals, and social services practitioners to develop better prevention strategies to alter or create earlier interventions that promote college-going cultures.
