Book excerpt: Developmental science has established the influence of the parent-child relationship on the development of social behavior, autonomy, and mental health across the lifespan. However, there have been few attempts to investigate the characteristics and the developmental outcomes associated with the parent-child relationship in families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). To address this clinically significant gap in the literature, the current dissertation used an observational coding method, commonly used in family research in typically developing populations, to characterize the parent-child relationship in families of children with ASD in preadolescence and in young adulthood. Study one compared the parent-child interaction characteristics between families of children with ASD and families of typically developing children aged 8 to 12 years old. It also examined the associations between the interaction characteristics and child mental health and autism symptoms. The levels of parent and child positivity and parent control were coded from interactions during a structured discussion task, and parents reported on temperament and mental health symptoms in their children. Study two examined the characteristics of the parent-young adult relationship in families of individuals with ASD. It also examined the degree to which relationship characteristics were associated with improvements in adaptive behavior and mental health symptoms resulting from an intervention targeting coping skills relevant to independent living. Eleven young adults with ASD and their parent participated in a structured discussion about the young adult's autonomy and living situation and were given standardized questionnaires before and after the intervention. The discussions were coded for levels of positivity and control in parents and children. The findings of this dissertation advance our understanding of the features of parent-child interactions that help support individuals with autism during the critical transitions to adolescence and adulthood.

Book excerpt: The current study drew on the Double ABCX model of stress to explore the relationship between parenting stress in parents of children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and factors contributing to heightened levels of stress. Specifically child characteristics, pile-up demands, external resources and parent perception were examined in cross-sectional samples of parents of children 2 (Time 1), 4 (Time 2) and 8 (Time 3) years of age. Additionally a comparison sample of parents of 2 year olds with a developmental delay (DD), and two longitudinal subsamples (2-4 and 4-8) were utilized. Prior to the childâ€™s diagnosis (Time 1), parenting stress was associated with the parentâ€™s perceptions, specifically concerns about the childâ€™s development. In the comparison DD sample, parenting stress was most related to social support. Changes in parenting stress over time were found to be associated with changes in adaptive skills, specifically parent-reported daily living and social skills. Contrary to hypotheses, social support was not found to be related to parenting stress at any time point in the ASD groups. Potential explanations for the varied contributors to parenting stress, as well as clinical implications are addressed.

It is critical to demystify the relationships of parents with adult children with ASD, and what their communication on a daily basis looks like. In a planned study, participants will be recruited through social media organizations or service providers. Once participants consent to partake in the study, investigators will provide a demographic survey that will be completed by each participant. Upon completion of the demographic questionnaires, using ecological momentary interventions/assessments, or daily diaries, the study will survey a minimum of 20 parents (maximum of 60) regarding the daily interactions with their adult child with ASD. For the duration of 14 days, the participants will receive and email or text each morning to complete the electronic survey, at the place and time of their convenience, concerning the interaction(s) they had with their child that day. Each survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes or less each and will be asked two or three times throughout the study to complete an interview with principal investigators (PI) over the phone or on Skype/Google Hangout. The current study will present pilot data collected to test the electronic surveys on Qualtrics, a research software, as well as to test the data collection process and the method by which the data should be gathered. One individual, a middle-aged woman, was requested to complete daily diaries over the course of three days. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the methodology to provide critical feedback prior to initiating the full study.
