Download or read book Uremic Toxins written by Severin Ringoir and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book contains the Proceedings of a two day Symposium on Uremic Toxins organized at the University of Ghent in Belgium. A series of guest lectures, free communications and posters have been presented. An international audience of 163 scientists from 16 nationalities listened to and discussed extensively a spectrum of topics brought forward by colleagues and researchers who worked for many years in the field of Uremic Toxins. There is a striking contrast between all the new dialysis strategies available in the work to "clean" the uremic patients and the almost non-progression of our knowledge on uremic toxins in the past decade. In this sense the symposium was felt by all participants as a new start for the research in the biochemical field of the definition of uremia. If the present volume would stimulate new work in this field in order to define uremia, or identify the uremic toxins, the purpose of the organizers would be maximally fulfilled.

Book Synopsis Understanding Kidney Diseases by : Hugh C. Rayner
Download or read book Understanding Kidney Diseases written by Hugh C. Rayner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text aids medical students and trainee doctors in developing their knowledge of the conditions covered and improving their ability to clinically assess patients and formulate a management plan. Once doctors are comfortable in interpreting these graphs, they can use them in consultations with patients about their kidney condition and so support self-management by patients, an increasingly important aspect of healthcare. Kidney diseases and the speciality of nephrology have traditionally been regarded as difficult to understand. This is compounded by the use of complex definitions and terminology. These complex definitions result from a need to categorise kidney diseases according to the way kidney function changes over time, and then to express this in numbers and words. Central to the assessment of patients is the measurement of kidney function. In our teaching of medical students and trainee doctors, as well as in our clinical practice and interaction with GPs and consultant colleagues, we have found that viewing graphs of patients’ kidney function (estimated glomerular filtration rate, or eGFR) against time is a much easier way of understanding kidney diseases. It provides the patient’s ‘kidney history’ and leads into a description of the natural history and management of their condition. We were surprised to find that this graphical approach is not used routinely in teaching or in daily clinical practice. We therefore believe there is a need for a book that uses this approach and we thus sought to compile a collection of illustrative case studies covering an array of disease categories, together with patients’ eGFR readings.

Book Synopsis Kidney Diseases: A Case-Based Approach by : Alice Foster
Download or read book Kidney Diseases: A Case-Based Approach written by Alice Foster and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kidney disease or renal disease refers to a disease of the kidney characterized by a loss of kidney function to varying degrees. It can lead to kidney failure or the complete loss of kidney function, if unresolved. Nephritis, nephrosis, chronic kidney disease and acute kidney disease are common kidney diseases. They may be caused by a deposition of immunoglobulin A antibodies in the glomerulus, xanthine oxidase deficiency, long-term exposure to lead or its salts, and administration of analgesics. A review of medical history, urine test, physical examination and renal ultrasound are required to establish a diagnosis of a kidney disease. Mostly, the management of kidney disease requires dialysis or a kidney transplant. This usually happens when the disease is at its end stage. The objective of this book is to give a general view of the different kinds of kidney diseases, and their diagnosis and treatment. The various studies that are constantly contributing towards advancing technologies and evolution of nephrology are examined in detail. In this book, using case studies and examples, constant effort has been made to make the understanding of the difficult concepts as easy and informative as possible, for the readers.

Book Synopsis Chronic Kidney Disease by : Junwei Yang
Download or read book Chronic Kidney Disease written by Junwei Yang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and systematic review of the latest findings in a wide spectrum of clinically important aspects of chronic kidney disease (CKD), focusing on clinical diagnosis and therapeutics. CKD is a global health problem with a rising morbidity and mortality. The last decade has seen significant improvements in determining the incidence, prevalence, and complications of CKD, mainly thanks to the definitions of CKD developed by the National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (K/DOQI). However, increased recognition of CKD has led to awareness of the limitations of its clinical diagnosis and treatment, which are essential to patients’ wellbeing. This book is of particular value not only to nephrologists, but also to general practitioners and residents with an interest in CKD. It offers a well-organized exposition of the current knowledge base. Compared with previously published books on kidney disease and CKD, it has a smaller number of more concise chapters. As a result, readers can easily obtain an overview of the most important topics in CKD. We hope that practitioners will gain as much from reading this practical guide to clinical management of CKD as we have from editing it.
