This book was released on 2022-10-22 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mechanics of Threaded Fasteners and Bolted Joints outlines how threaded fasteners and bolted joints fail, how these failures can be remedied, and ultimately how to avoid them altogether through tightening methods, material strength, and avoiding loosening. The book demonstrates how to select the appropriate tightening method and determine the optimal tightening procedure for varying nominal diameters. Using the finite element method, it discusses characteristics of stress concentration and fatigue strength and covers bolt force variation due to elastic interaction. The separation of the plate interface via increased external force as the primary cause of fatigue failure in threaded fasteners is discussed, with effective countermeasures provided. Empirical equations of thermal contact coefficient and apparent thermal contact coefficient in simple form are included as well.?? Outlines various tightening methods such as torque control, angle control, direct tension, and thermal expansion Demonstrates methods for preventing fatigue failure Discusses the effect of high and low temperature thermal loads on the strength of bolted joints by looking at thermal contact resistance at the interface
Book Synopsis Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences by : Wade H. Shafer
Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Bolts are commonly used in many structures to transfer loads from one component to another. When the structural components are fabricated using heterogeneous, fiber-reinforced composite materials and the magnitudes of the load transferred directly through the bolt vary, concerns regarding structural integrity arise. A change in the failure mode due to a change in the bolt load could be detrimental to the strength of the bolted joint. Results are available in the literature for the extreme cases where the bolt load is zero (unloaded hole) and where the total applied load is resisted by a bolt. This paper summarizes the results from an experimental-analytical program that investigated the effect of transferring an arbitrary fraction of the applied load through the bolt. In the analytical part of the program, a two-dimensional finite-element analysis was carried out, using NASTRAN, to predict the stress state around the bolted joint and the average stress failure criterion used to predict the joint strength and failure modes. The experimental program was conducted under room temperature dry and wet (1.2 percent moisture by weight) conditions. Experiments were conducted on AS/3501-6 graphite/epoxy specimens in test fixtures designed to transfer variable loads through the bolt. Identical specimens were subjected to static tensile and compressive loads, and to two lifetimes of tension and compression-dominated F-5 fatigue spectrum load conditions. Design curves were generated for the different test cases.

Book Synopsis Stress Analysis Method for Clearance-Fit Joints with Bearing-Bypass Loads by : National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Download or read book Stress Analysis Method for Clearance-Fit Joints with Bearing-Bypass Loads written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within a multi-fastener joint, fastener holes may be subjected to the combined effects of bearing loads and loads that bypass the hole to be reacted elsewhere in the joint. The analysis of a joint subjected to search combined bearing and bypass loads is complicated by the usual clearance between the hole and the fastener. A simple analysis method for such clearance-fit joints subjected to bearing-bypass loading has been developed in the present study. It uses an inverse formulation with a linear elastic finite-element analysis. Conditions along the bolt-hole contact arc are specified by displacement constraint equations. The present method is simple to apply and can be implemented with most general purpose finite-element programs since it does not use complicated iterative-incremental procedures. The method was used to study the effects of bearing-bypass loading on bolt-hole contact angles and local stresses. In this study, a rigid, frictionless bolt was used with a plate having the properties of a quasi-isotropic graphite/epoxy laminate. Results showed that the contact angle as well as the peak stresses around the hole and their locations were strongly influenced by the ratio of bearing and bypass loads. For single contact, tension and compression bearing-bypass loading had opposite effects on the contact angle. For some compressive bearing-bypass loads, the hole tended to close on the fastener leading to dual contact. It was shown that dual contact reduces the stress concentration at the fastener and would, therefore, increase joint strength in compression. The results illustrate the general importance of accounting for bolt-hole clearance and contact to accurately compute local bolt-hole stresses for combined bearings and bypass loading. Naik, R.
