Book excerpt: Le Traité théologico-politique (Tractatus theologicopoliticus) ou Traité des autorités théologique et politique est l'un des deux seuls ouvrages que Spinoza publia de son vivant (1670), le second étant Principes de la philosophie de Descartes en 1663. Contrairement à ce dernier, il le publia sans nom d'auteur et avec une fausse adresse d'éditeur, par crainte de poursuites politiques et religieuses, même si le livre lui fut vite attribué. L'ouvrage fut interdit aux Provinces-Unies en 1674.Dans ce texte, théologie et politique entretiennent un rapport particulier à la raison : c'est à partir d'elle et pour elle que sa pose la question des limites de pouvoir des théologiens et de l'État. Pour Spinoza, la raison se doit d'être indépendante de toute loi. Car le Néerlandais entend ici démontrer que la liberté de philosopher pour tout un chacun est utile mais avant tout nécessaire tant à la piété qu'à la sécurité de l'État.

Spinoza y défend ardemment la liberté de philosopher et d'interpréter les Écritures, s'opposant à l'emprise des autorités religieuses sur les esprits. Par une analyse historico-critique de l'Ancien Testament, il montre que la Bible est avant tout un récit des mœurs et de l'histoire du peuple hébreu, dont les préceptes peuvent être déduits par la seule lumière naturelle de la raison. Mais le "Traité théologico-politique" va plus loin encore, en posant les jalons d'une séparation claire entre foi et raison, théologie et philosophie. Salué par les Lumières mais violemment attaqué par les autorités religieuses, le "Traité théologico-politique" reste un ouvrage sulfureux et puissant. Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677) est un philosophe néerlandais d'origine portugaise, figure majeure du rationalisme et précurseur des Lumières. Né à Amsterdam dans une famille juive, il reçoit une éducation religieuse traditionnelle mais s'en détache progressivement, attiré par la philosophie et les sciences. En 1656, il est frappé d'excommunication (herem) par la communauté juive pour ses idées jugées hérétiques. Spinoza mène dès lors une vie simple et indépendante, gagnant sa vie comme tailleur de lentilles optiques. Son œuvre, d'une rigueur géométrique, développe une métaphysique moniste et déterministe : Dieu et la Nature ne font qu'un, tout découle nécessairement de la substance divine infinie. L'"Éthique", son ouvrage majeur, expose ce système et la voie d'une liberté et d'une béatitude par la connaissance. Mais c'est avec le "Traité théologico-politique" que Spinoza déclenche une véritable tempête. Défendant la liberté de philosopher et une lecture rationnelle de la Bible, il s'attire les foudres des autorités religieuses. Le livre sera interdit et son auteur surveillé.
