It is found that there are no waves below a minimum wave velocity; anharmonic waves develop above the critical velocity, but only up to a maximum amplitude, depending on the wave velocity; frequency amplitude relations indicate that small amplitude linearized theory is not a good approximation, except for large wave velocities; and in the limit of zero amplitude, twice the frequency of oscillation given by linearized theory for any wave velocity is obtained. The frequencies of spherical and cylindicl plsma oscillations, however, do depend upon the amplitude of the oscillation. AsA RESULT, ANY PHASE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ELECTRONS EVENTUALLY WILL BE DESTROYED AND THE ELECTRON VELOCIY BECOMES MULTIVALUED. The first of these is the derivative-expansion technique, '' applied to the Lagrangian-variable formalism. The second is a canonical-transformation procedure based on a hamiltonian description. Both procedures lead to the same formula for the dominant (four-wave) interaction process. If the spectrum is one-dimensional, the wave interaction vanishes. In general, the effect of wave interactions may be divided into coherent'' and incoherent'' contributions. The former leads to a frequency displacement that may be characterized by a dispersion relation. This is evaluated for a test wave in a thermally excited plasma and found to be of the standard form.
