Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Theology of Evolution Most persons who are disposed to be religious find it an easy thing to see the hand of God in the works of nature. To them it is pleasant and profitable to contemplate the world as Gods handiwork, and they are disposed to offer the marks of design which it shows as a convincing proof of His existence. The attempt to present this proof in a clear and orderly way has given rise to Natural Theology, a study which, until quite recently, was in high repute and esteem. It attained, perhaps, to its maximum of influence with the publication of Paley's Natural Theology, a remarkable work which put the argument from design in the plainest and clearest terms, and which was everywhere accepted as conclusive. It was accompanied and followed by many other works from which we may learn how highly Natural Theology was esteemed and how widely it was studied; of these the Bridgwater Treatises are, perhaps, the most famous. But this era of exceptional triumph and brilliancy did not last long. It may be said to have come to an end with the publication on the 24th of November, 1859, of Darwin's Origin of Species. As that book became well known the influence of Natural Theology declined. It was felt that the whole argument had lost its force, and that the appearance of plan and contrivance in Nature was fully and satisfactorily accounted for without any necessity for attributing it to conscious design. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Natural Theology: Based Upon the Doctrine of Evolution Dear Dr. Sanday, My attention to the subject of Natural Theology has been chiefly due to the encouragement I received from you, when many years ago, after a sermon preached in the Chapel of Bishop Hatfield's Hall, you expressed a desire to hear more from me on the subject of Darwinism in relation to Theology. And the unfailing sympathy and kindness you have shown towards me throughout the years in which, amid many distractions, this work has slowly grown and reached completion - in how imperfect a form I am only too conscious - moves me to ask you to permit your name to be associated with it, and to accept it from me as an expression of my gratitude. I have also to thank you, and Dr. Robertson, your successor at Durham, for the cheerful readiness with which, under the pressure of other engagements, you undertook to read the proof sheets; and for the many valuable suggestions which you and Dr. Robertson have made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Immanent God: An Essay on the Natural Theology of Evolution Science and Religion, or rather, Science and Theology, have, since the time of the German Reformation, when for the first time such a conflict became possible, been continually ar rayed, the one against the other. Indeed, before that time, although their activity was by definition restricted to differ ent and separate spheres, Theology having to do with the higher sphere - the Kingdom of Grace - as distinguished from the lower sphere, the Kingdom of Nature - the proper domain of Science, they frequently came into collision, and Theology often felt constrained to invoke the aid of the Church's anathemas to hinder the circulation and acceptance of teachings of Science which seemed to it to imperil the integrity of the current dog matic system. But the new scientific doctrine, so far as it can be said to have established itself in the creed of Naturalists of highest repute, has the effect, I am persuaded, to fortify rather than to weaken the argument of design. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Natural Theology The Theory of the Evolution of Living Beings, more familiarly known as the Theory of the Origin of Species, has continued to attract an increasing amount of public attention, ever since 1859, when Darwin published his great work on the subject. Although the principle of Evolution was not new, yet the crude and unscientific speculations of the earlier Evolutionists had failed to produce any deep or permanent impression on either the scientific or the popular mind; and it was left for Darwin and Wallace to promulgate a theory which could be seen to be both scientifically probable, and easily intelligible, and capable of accounting for a great number of familiar facts which had previously been regarded as lying almost beyond the domain of science, and therefore as incapable of explanation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Theology in the Nineteenth Century Mr. Darwin, not on account of his views as to evolution, but because of the valuable additions which, in the course of his labours on that subject, he has made to our know ledge of Natural History, and in deference to the position which he holds in the scientific world. But any one acquainted with the University of Cambridge forty years ago, will be aware that, at that time, a far greater claim than that which Mr. Darwin now has for the distinction, would have utterly failed to obtain it for him, if coupled with the views which he holds as to evolution. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1915, The Natural Theology of Evolution looks at the concept of natural theology, examining the argument for the existence of God based on reason and ordinary experiences of nature. The book looks at natural theology in light of Darwin's theory of evolution, and how this important discovery affected belief in intelligent design. The book argues that the discovery of evolution, far from diminishing the existence of God, provides stronger proof for an intelligently designed earth and therefore the existence of God. This book provides a unique and interesting take on the debates surrounding evolution in the late 19th and early 20th century. It will be of interest to philosophers, historians of religion and natural historians alike.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theology of Evolution: A Lecture Then it includes, secondly, the operations of the human heart; the affairs of the heart, matters of faith, questions of feeling, our hopes and fears, anxieties and wishes with regard to one or more supernatural beings, including all of that peculiar instinct which belongs to man everywhere and all over the world, which makes him look upwards, as well as downwards, towards what we call the unknown, or what some have been pleased to call the unknowable. All of this falls within the metaphysical department of the affections or of the emotions. The third department is that of ethics - the practical question of conduct between man and man; of good conduct and of bad conduct. As such, this belongs, not to the department of science, but to the department of applied science in a large sense, or that to which arts pertain.
