Book excerpt: Crinoids have graced the oceans for more than 500 million years. Among the most attractive fossils, crinoids had a key role in the ecology of marine communities through much of the fossil record, and their remains are prominent rock forming constituents of many limestones. This is the first comprehensive volume to bring together their form and function, classification, evolutionary history, occurrence, preservation and ecology. The main part of the book is devoted to assemblages of intact fossil crinoids, which are described in their geological setting in twenty-three chapters ranging from the Ordovician to the Tertiary. The final chapter deals with living sea lilies and feather stars. The volume is exquisitely illustrated with abundant photographs and line drawings of crinoids from sites around the world. This authoritative account recreates a fascinating picture of fossil crinoids for paleontologists, geologists, evolutionary and marine biologists, ecologists and amateur fossil collectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Organic molecules have been extracted directly from Paleozoic (Mississippian) crinoids that have retained some color differentiation as fossilized remains. The skeletal structure of crinoids is responsible for the preservation of ancient organic molecules and this structure is shared among other echinoderms. Further, color differentiation may also occur among other fossil echinoderm classes, such as the Asteroidea, Blastoidea, Diplopora, Echinoidea, and Edrioasteroidea. Preliminary analyses indicate that biomarker molecules are also preserved in specimens representing these classes. Biomarkers and other ancient preserved molecules are rapidly being discovered and used to study the evolution of life on Earth. Taxon-specific organic molecules from different Lower Mississippian (ca. 340 Ma) crinoids are demonstrated from the same sedimentary bed. These are organic molecules unknown previously from fossil organisms and are the oldest taxon-specific organic molecules known. These biomarker molecules have been classified as quinones using ultra-violet visible light spectroscopy (UV-Vis), excitation emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (EEMs), and electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF-MS). Further, parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) was applied to extracts to investigate the composition of components of the extracts, and six components were found, including quinones. These results suggest that the preservation of diagnostic organic molecules is much more common that previously known and that preserved organic molecules may provide an independent method to unravel phylogenetic relationships among echinoderms and, perhaps, other fossil organisms.

Book excerpt: Mississippian Age crinoids from Crawfordsville, Indiana, are known worldwide for their completeness, abundance, comparatively large size, and extraordinary aesthetic appeal. With over 100 detailed photos and drawings and incisive text, this book describes the locality, focusing on its exceptional value from both scientific and lay perspectives. The geologic region is explored, along with the factors believed to have led to the unusual preservation of these crinoids. Detailed descriptions of the morphology, geological history, and classification of stemmed Paleozoic age crinoids follows. Diagrams and photos of real specimens aid in understanding crinoid terminology and identifying and classifying these crinoids to the genus and species level. This book is written for both the new and advanced collector. It is also valuable to the new student of invertebrate paleontology. It provides updated insight into the morphology, classification, and identification of crinoid fossils collected at the Crawfordsville localities.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Devonian Crinoids of the State of New York York and sent him out among the Devonian rocks of the State specially to collect these crinoids with whose mode of occurrence he was already SO well acquainted. When a scientific collector goes out to get a certain class of objects he is or Should be blind to all else. Doctor White could see naught but crinoids and his explorations had not continued long before he uncovered, on the land of a Mr Sisson in the northern part of the town of Bristol, Ontario county, on a ravine slope at the village of Muttonville (now more euphoniously denominated Vincent), a colony of crinoids in the Hamilton (middle Devonian) shales which proved to be the most extraordinary assemblage of these ancient stone lilies which the rocks of New York or of the Devonian system have ever afforded. Doctor White had for his assistant in the actual work of uncovering this extraordinary bed, the late Christian Van Deloo, a very successful collector of invertebrate fossils. Together the two removed the hillside and left barely a trace behind. They had, however, located a distinct crinoidal horizon now well known through out the Finger Lakes region Of western New York as the Crinoid Layer lying directly above the T ichenor limestone at about the middle of the Hamilton beds and recognized as the base of the Moscow shales. Doctor White continued his investigations and collections in this region during the season of 1860, and with that very successful campaign among the crinoids the special collecting of them was for many years abandoned. A few years later Doctor White became the State Geologist of Iowa and eventually United States Paleontologist. This book was released on 2003 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six new primitive genera from the Early Ordovician of western Utah significantly advance our understanding of early crinoid history. Two of the new genera are the oldest crinoids (early Ibexian, early Tremadoc) and represent a previously unknown protocrinoid evolutionary grade, differing from other crinoids in having a nonstandardized dorsal cup and arms bearing ambulacral floor plates. Titanocrinus sumralli, new genus and species, has hundreds of unorganized mid-cup and interbrachial plates separating the cup-base basal circlet and the ray plates. Glenocrinus globularis, new genus and species, has similar plating with a more compact globular cup and fewer mid-cup plates, and is near the origin of diplobathrid camerates. A third taxon, Eknomocrinus wahwahensis, new genus and species, from the same lower stratigraphic interval, is a stem-group monocyclic camerate crinoid with standardized but irregular cup plating and other emergent crinoid traits shared with protocrinoids. Three new camerates from higher in the section are more derived. Cnemecrinus fillmorensis, new genus and species, and Habrotecrinus ibexensis, new genus and species, both latest Ibexian (middle Arenig), are monocyclic camerates. The latter taxon has unique accessory plates and major cup plate shapes. The fossil record indicates rapid diversification of disparid, cladid, and camerate crinoids by the end of the middle Ibexian (late Tremadoc), each arising independently from the protocrinoid stem group. Evidence from ontogeny, cup-stem and radial orientation, and now, early morphologic transitions necessitates revision of long used skeletal terminology. Dual ray and cup-base references for plate homologies, rather than the traditional ray-only model, are consistent with this evidence. Consequently, infrabasals are redefined as the cup-base circlet of both dicyclic and monocyclic crinoids. The use of basals is restricted to plates between infrabasals and radials of dicyclic (and tricyclic) crinoids. Traditional classifications emphasizing cup plate circlet number is unreliable early in the crinoid record; instead, posterior and interray cup morphology provides the most consistent phylogenetic information.
