Book Synopsis Andrew Carnegie Speaks to the 1% by : Andrew Carnegie
Download or read book Andrew Carnegie Speaks to the 1% written by Andrew Carnegie and published by Gray Rabbit Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the 99% occupied Wall Street... Before the concept of social justice had impinged on the social conscience... Before the social safety net had even been conceived... By the turn of the 20th Century, the era of the robber barons, Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) had already accumulated a staggeringly large fortune; he was one of the wealthiest people on the globe. He guaranteed his position as one of the wealthiest men ever when he sold his steel business to create the United States Steel Corporation. Following that sale, he spent his last 18 years, he gave away nearly 90% of his fortune to charities, foundations, and universities. His charitable efforts actually started far earlier. At the age of 33, he wrote a memo to himself, noting ..".The amassing of wealth is one of the worse species of idolatry. No idol more debasing than the worship of money." In 1881, he gave a library to his hometown of Dunfermline, Scotland. In 1889, he spelled out his belief that the rich should use their wealth to help enrich society, in an article called "The Gospel of Wealth" this book. Carnegie writes that the best way of dealing with wealth inequality is for the wealthy to redistribute their surplus means in a responsible and thoughtful manner, arguing that surplus wealth produces the greatest net benefit to society when it is administered carefully by the wealthy. He also argues against extravagance, irresponsible spending, or self-indulgence, instead promoting the administration of capital during one's lifetime toward the cause of reducing the stratification between the rich and poor. Though written more than a century ago, Carnegie's words still ring true today, urging a better, more equitable world through greater social consciousness.

Book Synopsis 3 Dimensional Wealth by : Roey Diefendorf
Download or read book 3 Dimensional Wealth written by Roey Diefendorf and published by Greenleaf Book Group. This book was released on 2005-06 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By today's standards, wealth is generally measured by one's financial status. In 3 Dimensional Wealth, veteran financial advisors Monroe M. Diefendorf, Jr and Robert Sterling Madden offer a radically sane perspective on wealth that reveals how tangible assets such as money, property, and possessions are only one aspect of wealth. The 3 Dimensional Wealth premise is simple: replace preconceived notions of wealth with a more encompassing perspective that includes personal (who you are), financial (what you have), and social (how you make a difference) dimensions for a total measurement of your life. The authors reveal how to transition your life from a traditional one-dimensional approach concerning wealth to a three dimensional life that has greater significance. This self-discovery journey will challenge you to strive for a more meaningful existence.
Book Synopsis Poverty and Wealth in East Africa by : Rhiannon Stephens
Download or read book Poverty and Wealth in East Africa written by Rhiannon Stephens and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Poverty and Wealth in East Africa Rhiannon Stephens offers a conceptual history of how people living in eastern Uganda have sustained and changed their ways of thinking about wealth and poverty over the past two thousand years. This history serves as a powerful reminder that colonialism and capitalism did not introduce economic thought to this region and demonstrates that even in contexts of relative material equality between households, people invested intellectual energy in creating new ways to talk about the poor and the rich. Stephens uses an interdisciplinary approach to write this history for societies without written records before the nineteenth century. She reconstructs the words people spoke in different eras using the methods of comparative historical linguistics, overlaid with evidence from archaeology, climate science, oral traditions, and ethnography. Demonstrating the dynamism of people’s thinking about poverty and wealth in East Africa long before colonial conquest, Stephens challenges much of the received wisdom about the nature and existence of economic and social inequality in the region’s deeper past.
Book Synopsis Rethinking Wealth and Taxes by : Geoffrey Poitras
Download or read book Rethinking Wealth and Taxes written by Geoffrey Poitras and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-28 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taxes on the wealthy are a topic sure to incite venomous rants from both right-wing and left-wing ideologues. The topic attracts conflicting interpretations and policy recommendations, and generates proposals for tax reform that consume political debate. All this activity takes place against an opaque backdrop of empirical evidence dealing with the distribution of wealth and income, and tax avoidance and tax evasion by corporations and wealthy individuals. Rethinking Wealth and Taxes explores these problems and considers the possibilities for increasing taxes on wealth to address the increasingly unequal distribution of wealth and income.
Book Synopsis How to Tax Wealth by : Mr. Shafik Hebous
Download or read book How to Tax Wealth written by Mr. Shafik Hebous and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2024-03-08 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tackling income and wealth inequality is at the top of the policy agenda in many countries. This note discusses three approaches of wealth taxation, based on (1) returns with a capital income tax, (2) stocks with a wealth tax, and (3) transfers of wealth through an inheritance (or estate) tax. Taxing actual returns is generally less distortive and more equitable than a wealth tax. Hence, rather than introducing wealth taxes, reform priorities should focus on strengthening the design of capital income taxes (notably capital gains) and closing existing loopholes, while harnessing technological advances in tax administration—including cross-border information sharing—to foster tax compliance. The inheritance tax is important to address the buildup of dynastic wealth.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Sovereign Wealth Funds by : Douglas J. Cumming
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Sovereign Wealth Funds written by Douglas J. Cumming and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs) represent both an increasingly important - and potentially dominant - category of alternative investor, and a novel form for governments to project their interests both home and abroad. As such, they represent both economic actors and embody power vested in the financial and diplomatic resources they can leverage. Although at times they have acted in concert with other alternative investors, their intergenerational savings function should, in theory at least, promote more long-termist thinking. However, they may be impelled in towards greater short termism, in response to popular pressures, demands from predatory elites and/or unforeseen external shocks. Of all the categories of alternative investment, SWFs perhaps embody the most contradictory pressures, making for diverse and complex outcomes. The aim of this volume is to consolidate the present state of the art, and advance the field through new applied, conceptual and theoretical insights. The volume is ordered into chapters that explore thematic issues and country studies, incorporating novel insights in on the most recent developments in the SWF ecosystem. This handbook is organized into four sections and 23 chapters. The four sections are: Governance of SWFs, Political and Legal Aspects of SWFs, Investment Choices and Structures of SWFs, Country and Regional Analyses of SWFs.

Book Synopsis The Palgrave Handbook of Sovereign Wealth Funds by : Harold Kent Baker
Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Sovereign Wealth Funds written by Harold Kent Baker and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 677 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Palgrave Handbook of Sovereign Wealth Funds provides a comprehensive, detailed analysis of these funds from a multidimensional perspective consisting of 33 chapters divided into seven sections. Section I provides background material about SWFs, providing a foundation for the remainder of the handbook. Section II examines various controversies, governance, and accountability topics involving SWFs. Section III discusses the political, legal, and tax aspects of SWFs. Section IV reviews numerous topics involving SWF management. Section V deals with SWFs' policies, preferences, and performance. Section VI provides descriptive analyses of SWFs based on country or region. It also offers a comparison of SWF similarities and differences across countries. Section VII concludes by examining special issues and the future of SWFs. This handbook spans the gamut from theoretical to practical while offering the right balance of detailed and user-friendly coverage. Discussion of relevant research permeates the handbook. Although other books are available on SWFs, few are as comprehensive or provide a multidimensional perspective from academics and practitioners. This handbook fills a gap by showing how SWFs are a growing and dynamic force in international finance.
Book Synopsis Sovereign Wealth Funds by : Christopher Balding
Download or read book Sovereign Wealth Funds written by Christopher Balding and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-08 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sovereign wealth funds are a growing and dynamic force in international finance. The shifting international economic relations from capital rich states gives them new power in influencing the global agenda. Despite controlling trillions of dollars in the biggest companies in the world, little is known about the opaque funds of oil rich and non-democratic governments. This is the first book to compile a history of sovereign wealth funds recounting the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority's involvement with the scandal-plagued BCCI bank and Chinese arms exports to Iran. By constructing a history within the proper context of oil driven surpluses and large inflationary pressures with no international investment framework, this book explains the development and growth of sovereign wealth funds. The economics of capital surplus countries and investment strategies are examined in order to better understand sovereign wealth fund creation and growth. In a straightforward and accessible style, the author examines the complex and amazing growth of an unknown group of investors controlling trillions of dollars worldwide.
Download or read book The Wealth Paradox written by Frank Mols and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The West is currently in the grip of a perfect storm: a lingering economic recession, a global refugee crisis, declining faith in multiculturalism, and the rise of populist anti-immigration parties. These developments seem to confirm the widely held view that hardship and poverty lead to social unrest and, more specifically, scapegoating of minorities. Yet in this provocative new book, Mols and Jetten present compelling evidence to show that prejudice and intergroup hostility can be equally prevalent in times of economic prosperity, and among more affluent sections of the population. Integrating theory and research from social psychology, political science, sociology, and history, the authors systematically investigate why positive factors such as gratification, economic prosperity, and success may also fuel negative attitudes and behaviours. The Wealth Paradox provides a timely and important re-evaluation of the role that economic forces play in shaping prejudice.
