Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a measurement of \ssWW production in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider using the ATLAS detector. The $W$ bosons are required to decay leptonically, giving a signature of two leptons of the same electric charge, two jets, and missing transverse energy. The analysis is performed on the entire 8 TeV dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$. The cross section is measured in two fiducial regions, and an excess over the background-only prediction is observed with a significance of 4.5$\sigma$ for inclusive \ssWW production and 3.6$\sigma$ for electroweak \ssWW production. The measured cross sections are in agreement with Standard Model predictions, and limits are set on anomalous quartic gauge couplings.

A dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 22.3 /fb recorded by the ATLAS experiment in the year 2012 is used. The W bosons are identified by their decay products of exactly two leptons with opposite electrical charge, electrons or muons, and missing transverse momentum induced by their corresponding neutrinos. First, a measurement restricted to final states without hadronic jets is presented and differential fiducial cross sections, total cross sections and limits on anomalous triple gauge boson couplings are obtained. A second measurement of the fiducial cross section in association with exactly one hadronic jet is presented. The ratio of fiducial cross sections for different jet multiplicities is reported and the combined fiducial cross section is extrapolated to the total phase space.

Book excerpt: We present a measurement of the production cross section for ZW and ZZ boson pairs in final states with a pair of charged leptons, from the decay of a Z boson, and at least two jets, from the decay of a W or Z boson, using the full sample of proton-antiproton collisions recorded with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to 8.9 fb(̂-1) of integrated luminosity. We increase the sensitivity to vector boson decays into pairs of quarks using a neural network discriminant that exploits the differences between the spatial spread of energy depositions and charged-particle momenta contained within the jet of particles originating from quarks and gluons. Additionally, we employ new jet energy corrections to Monte Carlo simulations that account for differences in the observed energy scales for quark and gluon jets. The number of signal events is extracted through a simultaneous fit to the dijet mass spectrum in three classes of events: events likely to contain jets with a heavy-quark decay, events likely to contain jets originating from light quarks, and events that fail these identification criteria. We determine the production cross section to be 2.5 +2.0 -1.0 pb (

Differential cross sections are measured with data collected by the CMS experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.8 inverse femtobarns. Z bosons are reconstructed through their decays to electrons and muons. Cross sections are measured as a function of observables characterizing the kinematics of the b jet and the Z boson. Ratios of differential cross sections for the associated production with at least one b jet to the associated production with any jet are also presented. The production of a Z boson with two b jets is investigated, and differential cross sections are measured for the dijet system. Results are compared to theoretical predictions, testing two different flavour schemes for the choice of initial-state partons.

Book excerpt: In this study, we present a measurement of the W-boson-pair production cross section in pp¯ collisions at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy and the first measurement of the differential cross section as a function of jet multiplicity and leading-jet energy. The W+W– cross section is measured in the final state comprising two charged leptons and neutrinos, where either charged lepton can be an electron or a muon. Using data collected by the CDF experiment corresponding to 9.7 fb–1 of integrated luminosity, a total of 3027 collision events consistent with W+W– production are observed with an estimated background contribution of 1790±190 events. The measured total cross section is ?(pp¯→W+W–) = 14.0 ± 0.6(stat)+1.2–1.0 (syst)±0.8 (lumi) pb, consistent with the standard model prediction.

Book excerpt: Measurements of jet production rates in association with W and Z bosons for jet transverse momenta above 30 GeV are reported, using a sample of proton-proton collision events recorded by CMS at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns. The study includes the measurement of the normalized inclusive rates of jets sigma(V +>= n jets)/sigma(V), where V represents either a W or a Z. In addition, the ratio of W to Z cross sections and the W charge asymmetry as a function of the number of associated jets are measured. A test of Berends--Giele scaling at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is also presented. The measurements provide a stringent test of perturbative-QCD calculations and are sensitive to the possible presence of new physics. The results are in agreement with the predictions of a simulation that uses explicit matrix element calculations for final states with jets.

Book excerpt: A measurement of the simultaneous production of a W and a Z boson (WZ production) via vector boson scattering is presented. The measurement is performed in the leptonic decay modes WZ --> lvl'l', where l, l' indicate an electron or muon. The analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider collected with the Compact Muon Solenoid detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. The WZ plus two jet production cross section is measured in fiducial regions with enhanced contributions from electroweak (EW) production and found to be consistent with standard model predictions. The EW WZ production in association with two jets is measured with an observed (expected) significance of 2.2 (2.5) standard deviations. Results are also interpreted in terms of physics beyond the standard model modifying the interactions of the W and Z bosons. Constraints on charged Higgs boson production and on anomalous quartic gauge couplings in terms of dimension-eight effective field theory operators are presented.

Events are consider with one electron or one muon, missing transverse energy, and at least two hadronic jets. The data were collected by the D0 detector in Run IIa of the Tevatron accelerator and correspond to 1.07 fb−1 of integrated luminosity for each of the two channels (WW/WZ → e[nu]q{bar q} and WW/WZ → [mu][nu]q{bar q}). The cross section for WW + WZ production is measured to be 20.2 ± 2.5(stat) {+-} 3.6(sys) {+-} 1.2(lum) pb with a Gaussian significance of 4.4 standard deviations above the background-only scenario. This measurement is consistent with the Standard Model prediction and represents the first direct evidence for WW and WZ production with semi-leptonic decays at a hadron collider.
