Book excerpt: The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) of 2004 includes the mandate that seconary transition services be based on evidence-based practices that improve the post-school outcomes for students with disabilities. This study sought to assess the availability of evidence-based secondary transition services -- general education involvement, paid work experience, involvement in transition programming, and career and technical education--in three Alaskan school districts. Qualitative data was gained through structured interviews with special education directors and quantitative data was obtained through surveys distributed to secondary special education teachers. Results demonstrated consistent supports for general education involvement and paid employment, but inconsistent transition programming and career and technical education. Additionally, smaller schools use an inclusive model to provide transition services and lack the career and technical education courses available at larger schools. Implications for practice and future research considerations are discussed.
