Book excerpt: This book identifies key treatment challenges and unique care considerations in patients with head and neck cancers, providing a comprehensive guide to patient management that illustrates the critical importance of a multidisciplinary approach in achieving optimal oncological, functional, and survival outcomes. It covers all relevant specialties, including dental and oral medicine, medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, and reconstructive surgery. It highlights the vital role played by ancillary head and neck cancer services, such as speech and swallowing therapy, occupational and physical therapy, and nutritional therapy in offering essential physical and psychological support from the time of diagnosis onward. The closing chapters address post-treatment issues, including those relating to survivorship, surveillance, and end-of-life care. Multidisciplinary care is perhaps even more important for patients with head and neck cancers than for other cancer patients, and in addressing all its aspects this book is invaluable for a wide range of practitioners.

This third edition of Head and Neck Cancer: Treatment, Rehabilitation, and Outcomes, continues in the tradition of the prior editions, providing the reader with the most up-to-date evidence relating to head and neck cancer, its management, and its rehabilitation from a multidisciplinary perspective. As in the prior editions, the content is enriched by the contributions of a large team of internationally recognized experts from both the medical and allied health communities. Beginning with an update of what is known about cancer of the head and neck, the reader is then introduced to the multidisciplinary team and the importance of the multidisciplinary approach in head and neck cancer management. Chapters then cover nonsurgical and surgical management, and the communication and swallowing management of cancers of the oral/oropharynx and larynx/hypopharynx. Other chapters guide the reader through current best practice management of lymphedema, tracheostomy, nutrition, neuromuscular disorders, as well as psychological supports and survivorship. A further six chapters are dedicated specifically to supporting the laryngectomy patient population and their complex rehabilitation needs. The final chapter presents the ever-expanding world of technology and its use in the management and delivery of head and neck cancer care. Together these chapters provide the core theoretical and clinical knowledge for healthcare professionals managing patients with head and neck cancer. The content has also been presented at a level suitable for both undergraduate and graduate students. New to the Third Edition * All chapters have been revised and updated with relevant research and clinical insights to reflect the current state of practice. * New chapters have been created to cover in more depth specific content relating to neuromuscular management, lymphedema management, and psychological supports. * New collaborators have joined the author groups bringing new insights and learnings. * All chapters are illuminated with clinical images, illustrations, and/or case studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is a complex disease evolved due to multiple genetic changes leading to uncontrolled proliferation of cells with metastatic ability. The process of cancer development is a multistage event involving inactivation of tumor suppressor genes, activation of oncogenes and altered expression of non-coding ribonucleic acids. Diet and nutrition play a vital role in the etiology, prevention and management of cancer. Since, cancer patients undergo unintentional weight loss and are presented with some degree of malnutrition, dietary management for cancer aims at meeting the increased calorie and protein needs to prevent loss of weight, muscle mass and fat mass; improve the immune system and meet the nutrient requirements. Many studies report that nutritional intervention can improve treatment outcomes and prognosis in cancer.

This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An estimated 90 percent of oncology patients in the United States receive treatment in outpatient cancer centers and clinics. This change from the older model of inpatient care has important implications for overall quality of care for oncology patients and nutritional care in particular. Amidst growing concern about access to oncology nutrition services, combined with growing recognition of the importance of providing nutritional care to optimize oncology treatment outcomes and maximize quality of life among both patients and survivors of cancer, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a public workshop in March 2016 to explore evolving interactions between nutritional care, cancer, and health outcomes. Participants explored how health outcomes and survival of cancer patients in outpatient cancer centers are affected by current standards for nutritional services, nutritional interventions, and benefits associated with oncology patient access to medical nutrition therapy. They also studied the cost of outpatient nutritional care and assessed costâ€"benefit relationships between oncology nutrition services and health outcomes and survival. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Head and neck cancer (cancer of the mouth, tongue, and/or throat) is a malignant neoplasm originating from abnormal cells arising in tissues forming the pancreas. The most common type of head and neck cancer is squamous cell carcinoma, which accounts for 95% of these tumors. This handbook is written for patients to aid them during their fight with head and neck cancer. It is common for patients with a cancer diagnosis to have many questions about the impact of nutrition and diet. In fact, this is one of the main ways that you (or your loved one) can aid yourself in the battle with cancer. The cancer can inhibit your body's ability to heal, decrease your energy, and decrease your immune system. By optimizing diet and nutrition, research has shown that outcomes of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy can be improved. This can, in turn, lead to improved cure rates, better cancer treatment outcomes, and greater ability for the body to heal and rebound from the effects of cancer therapy.
