Beach Bum Berry, as he is better known, is America's leading authority on tropical drinks and polynesian pop culture. In this all new book, Berry not only offers up tantilizing new drink recipes, but tells stories about some of the most famous figures of their time. The Bum applies the same dogged research to the untold stories of the people behind the drinks. Stories culled from over 100 interviews with those who actually created the mid-century Tiki scene -- people as colorful as the drinks they invented, or served, or simply drank. People like: Leon Lontoc, the Don The Beachcomber's waiter who served Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando by night, and acted in their movies by day; Henry Riddle, the Malibu Seacomber bartender who fed items about his famous customers to infamous gossip columnist Louella Parsons, till the day Howard Hughes found him out; and Duke Kamanamoku, whose manager turned him from Olympic champion into reluctant restaurateur.

Bullock moved frequently and changed professions during the dry period, but kept bartending at St. Louis Country Club where people could still drink. The country club did not keep the records on him working there. Feel free to take a look at our complete Reprint Catalog of Vintage Cocktail Books at www.VintageCocktailBooks.com

Book excerpt: Anthropologists and historians have confirmed the central role alcohol has played in nearly every society since the dawn of human civilization, but it is only recently that it has been the subject of serious scholarly inquiry. The Oxford Companion to Spirits and Cocktails is the first major reference work to cover the subject from a global perspective, and provides an authoritative, enlightening, and entertaining overview of this third branch of the alcohol family. It will stand alongside the bestselling Companions to Wine and Beer, presenting an in-depth exploration of the world of spirits and cocktails in a groundbreaking synthesis. The Companion covers drinks, processes, and techniques from around the world as well as those in the US and Europe. It provides clear explanations of the different ways that spirits are produced, including fermentation, distillation, and ageing, alongside a wealth of new detail on the emergence of cocktails and cocktail bars, including entries on key cocktails and influential mixologists and cocktail bars. With entries ranging from Manhattan and mixology to sloe gin and stills, the Companion combines coverage of the range of spirit-based drinks around the world with clear explanations of production processes, and the history and culture of their consumption. It is the ultimate guide to understanding what is in your glass. The Companion is lavishly illustrated throughout, and appendices include a timeline of spirits and distillation and a guide to mixing drinks.

Book excerpt: Rediscover the lost art of cocktailing. Of all the skills you might acquire in life, the ability to make a good cocktail is a never going to be a waste of your time. No lover will complain when you present them a well-iced Negroni as they walk through your door; no house-guest will complain at the suggestion of a round of Gin Sours. To cocktail was coined as a verb by F Scott Fitzgerald in 1928. This amateur guide to cocktailing, embodies Fitzgerald's Golden Age spirit while giving it a thoroughly modern makeover. Expressly structured for the amateur, the first chapter of this book shows how just 6 bottles are needed for 25 classic cocktails. From this simple start the book brings a wealth of cocktail recipes and knowledge, all the while reminding you of the pleasures of cocktailing chez toi. From a Pean to the Spritz and a rehabilitation of the Bromx, through cocktail history and cocktailonomics, to go-to lists like 'The Top 5 Girly Drinks', The Spirits is a perfect mix. Informative recipes blended with whimsy and anecdote, are given a dash of fun, and finished with a twist of brilliantly wry humour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am a local man who is unable to work due to a disabling back injury caused in a truck accident in 2006, I am currently on the invalids benefit. I have a positive mental attitude and firmly believe that when one door closes another door opens. I also believe that knowledge is the key to a brighter future and the being inform will set you free. I seek the truth of my earthly existence and love in this world that is full of illusions and stubborn mind sets that do not accept change and growth. On my journey through life so far I have experienced highs and lows , from being suicidal at times to the exhilaration of being a top soldier, sportsman, father and contributing member of society. I regard family as the most important part in anyones life; it is the stage where you learn to be yourself and about unconditional love. You can choose your friends but not your family lol. I came from a large family of eight; I grew up pretty fast being the oldest male in the family as described in my first letter of my auto biography. I was guided by my ancestors and god to write so that others could learn from it. I am not a clever man I had 198 half days a whanganui boys college it was just good enough for me to pass the entry exam three times to join the army I was both a regular and then territorial soldier, when East Timor turned to violence in 2000 I reenlisted for the third time, but due to medical reasons I was not accepted for my third tour of duty. I am a spiritual being as well as flesh, the body is merely a vessel, my hope is that my book will inspire others of like mind or lost souls open there minds to one possible truth the truth that has captivated and inspired me all my life that we all are the children of a very loving god, creator or supreme being.
