Book excerpt: The Danio rerio (zebrafish) is an alternative vertebrate animal model for in vitro and in vivo research methodologies. In the last decades, notably due to increased laboratory investigation, novel discoveries, and complete genome sequencing, the zebrafish has attracted great interest from the scientific community. Its exceptional genetic homology to humans and the large number of mutations and diseases that can be reproduced in the make zebrafish an effective research model. This book examines the advantages of using zebrafish in scientific applications.

Book Synopsis Environmental Education in the 21st Century by : Joy Palmer
Download or read book Environmental Education in the 21st Century written by Joy Palmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental education is a field characterised by a paradox. Few would doubt the urgency and importance of learning to live in sustainable ways, but environmental education holds nowhere near the priority position in formal schooling around the world that this would suggest. This text sets out to find out why this is so. It is divided into six parts: Part 1 is a concise history of the development of environmental education from an international perspective; Part 2 is an overview of the 'global agenda', or subject knowledge of environmental education; Part 3 introduces perspectives on theory and research in environmental education; Part 4 moves on to practice, and presents an integrated model for planning environmental education programmes; Part 5 brings together invited contributors who talk about environmental education in their own countries - from 15 countries including China, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the USA; Part 6 returns to the core questions of how progress can be made, and how we can maximise the potential of environmental education for the twenty first century.
Book Synopsis Food, Health and Safety in Cross Cultural Consumer Contexts by : Derek V. Byrne
Download or read book Food, Health and Safety in Cross Cultural Consumer Contexts written by Derek V. Byrne and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of cross-cultural perspectives in research in food is important in general and particularly so in relation to human perception in food and health. Food concepts are very different across different jurisdictions. Different markets and cultures have varying perspectives on what is considered a palatable, acceptable, or useful food or food product; in simple terms, one size does not at all in the majority of cases. Specific markets thus need targeted food design, to be successful from a myriad of perspectives. In this Special Issue anthology "Food, Health and Safety in Cross-Cultural Consumer Contexts", we bring together articles that show the wide range of studies from fundamental to market applicability currently in focus in sensory and consumer science in food, health, and safety cross-cultural contexts. From the included perspectives, it is abundantly clear that there is a need for much knowledge related to future food design linked to cross-cultural contexts and that this will continue to be critical to the success of food transfer in global food markets.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Research Companion to Electronic Music: Reaching out with Technology by : Simon Emmerson
Download or read book The Routledge Research Companion to Electronic Music: Reaching out with Technology written by Simon Emmerson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this Research Companion is 'connectivity and the global reach of electroacoustic music and sonic arts made with technology'. The possible scope of such a companion in the field of electronic music has changed radically over the last 30 years. The definitions of the field itself are now broader - there is no clear boundary between 'electronic music' and 'sound art'. Also, what was previously an apparently simple divide between 'art' and 'popular' practices is now not easy or helpful to make, and there is a rich cluster of streams of practice with many histories, including world music traditions. This leads in turn to a steady undermining of a primarily Euro-American enterprise in the second half of the twentieth century. Telecommunications technology, most importantly the development of the internet in the final years of the century, has made materials, practices and experiences ubiquitous and apparently universally available - though some contributions to this volume reassert the influence and importance of local cultural practice. Research in this field is now increasingly multi-disciplinary. Technological developments are embedded in practices which may be musical, social, individual and collective. The contributors to this companion embrace technological, scientific, aesthetic, historical and social approaches and a host of hybrids – but, most importantly, they try to show how these join up. Thus the intention has been to allow a wide variety of new practices to have voice – unified through ideas of 'reaching out' and 'connecting together' – and in effect showing that there is emerging a different kind of 'global music'.
