Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: In pursuing the study, we followed a theological analysis of the concept of Evangelization in a marginalised world, and in this regard we base ourselves an the scriptural sources, documents of Vatican II, post-Vatican, the papal and synodal documents, and the reflections of theologians an the issue. Our study is divided into five chapters an the whole. The first chapter, which has three parts. The first part of it is an attempt to see the meaning, context and core of the commonly used expression `holistic liberation' . Here we try to see whether the real meaning of the term has been incorporated into the life and pattern of the missionary endeavour of the Church as outlined in scripture, papal, synodal, and Vatican II documents. For this purpose, in the second part, we examine whether the notions of human dignity and human person as given in Pastoral Constitution of Gaudium et Spes, are visible vantage points and the stepping stones for further post-Vatican teachings. In the concluding section, efforts are made to throw some light an the holistic liberation in the ecclesial context of India, after which we review the three dimensions of evangelization in India, i.e. inculturation, dialogue and liberation. Chapter two of our work is situated against the Indian background. A reasonable knowledge of the context in which the evangelization has to take place seems necessary. In order to situate the context properly we try to see India from its social, economic, cultural and religious dimensions. The ecclesial situation of India is considered because we believe that it is the Churches in India that are the agents of the process of holistic liberation. In the second part of this chapter we make a semantic view of `marginalised' . It is followed by an investigation an the most marginalised in Madhya Pradesh/India viz. the Dalits, the Adivasis and the Women, who are the victims of poverty, illiteracy and oppression. Marginalised in our study imply all those sections of the society in Madhya Pradesh who are kept an the fringes of the society an either one or all of the following criteria (a) Politically, (b) Economically, (c) Culturally. For a better understanding of the marginalised groups we take a specimen, the `Satnamis' in Raipur diocese and focus our attention an them, in the third part of this chapter, as they are the most depressed and oppressed people here. In Asia, Protestants encountered a mixed Jesuit legacy: in South Asia, they benefited from pioneering Jesuit ethnographers while contesting their conversions; in Japan, all Christian missionaries who returned after 1853 faced the equation of Japanese nationalism with anti-Jesuit persecution; and in China, Protestants scrambled to catch up to the cultural legacy bequeathed by the earlier Jesuit mission. In the Americas, Protestants presented Jesuits as enemies of liberal modernity, supporters of medieval absolutism yet master manipulators of modern self-fashioning and the printing press. The evidence suggests a far more complicated relationship of both Protestants and Jesuits as co-creators of the bright and dark sides of modernity, including the public sphere, public education, plantation slavery, and colonialism.

Book excerpt: Colonial missionaries, both Catholic and Protestant, arrived in India with the grandiose vision of converting the pagans because, like St. Peter (Acts 4:12) and most of the church fathers, they honestly believed that there is no salvation outside the church (extra ecclesiam nulla salus). At the end of the "great Protestant century," however, Christians made up less than 3 percent of the population in India, and the hope of the missionary was nearly shattered. But if one looks at mission in India qualitatively rather than quantitatively, one sees a number of positive outcomes. Missionaries in India, particularly Protestant missionaries espousing the social gospel, in collaboration with a few British evangelical administrators, dared to challenge numerous social evils and even began to eradicate them. The scientific and liberal English education began to enlighten and transform the Indian mindset. Converts belonging to the upper caste, although small in number, laid the foundation stone of Indian theology and an inculturated church using Indian genius. The end of colonialism in India coincided with the painful death of colonial mission theology. Now, the power of the Word of God, extricated from political power, is slowly and peacefully gaining ground, like the mustard seed of the parable. A paradigm shift from the ecclesio-centric mission to missio Dei offers reason for further optimism. In short, the future of mission in India is as bright as the kingdom of God. In today's new context, theologians, despite objections from some quarters, are struggling to discover the Asian face of Jesus, disfigured by the Greco-Roman Church. And the missionary is challenged to become a living Bible that, undoubtedly, everyone will read.
