Book excerpt: Christian apologetics has become very popular among 21st Century evangelicals. Unfortunately, it is often enjoyed rather than employed. It is a novelty, or hobby subject for believers who enjoy talking theology and philosophy in the tradition of the Athenian intelligentsia to whom Paul preached in Acts seventeen. When Christian apologetics is employed, it is often misused. Rather than seeking to impact the heart and mind of an individual, a believer who is enamored with Christian defense might use novice approaches to "win" an argument. However, the desire of the church should be for God to win an individual's heart and mind. The goal of this work is to aid and inspire the people of God in the work of evangelism. Introducing Christian apologetics for the sake of novelty is not in view. Instead, the author sees Christian defense as a practice that is often necessary when carrying out the evangelistic task. Some have referred to this great discipline as a pre-evangelistic endeavor. While this makes sense in a practical way, it improperly describes what is actually taking place during an apologetic appeal. In the author's view, no Christian apologist has accomplished his work until he has presented, and in some cases defended, the truth of the gospel. Such a presentation is, by definition, an evangelistic one.In this Volume:- Christian Apologetics in the 21st Century- The History of Christian Apologetics- The Major Divisions of Christian Apologetics- The State of Evangelism in the 21st Century - The Compatibility of Evangelism and Christian Apologetics- The Integration of Evangelism and Christian Apologetics- Apologetics and Doctrinal Differences- Theistic Arguments- Evidences in Favor of the Resurrection of Jesus- Arguments and Evidences Specific to Various Methodologies- Guidance in Choosing an Apologetic Method for Types of Evangelistic Ministries- Instruction on Delivery of Evangelistic Apologetics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book you are holding in your hands is perhaps the simplest, most straightforward summary and how-to guide for presuppositional apologetics now in print. It is both informative and practically helpful. I believe you will fi nd it an extremely useful tool whether you are an professor at the seminary level seeking supplemental reading material or just a simple lay person looking for practical answers. Pastor McManis writes with crisp clarity in a way that is certain to give you fresh insight into what Scripture teaches about the defense of the Christian faith. I wish this book had been available when I was studying apologetics in seminary." John MacArthur, Pastor-Teacher, Grace Community Church; President of The Masters College and Seminary Cliff has rescued the discipline from the elite circle of the intelligentsia and returned it as a biblical theology of truth communication to the common people (i.e. to all believers). This volume will be of great help in the restoration of the practicality of biblical apologetics as it was exemplified in the early Church. Hopefully, todays readers will be able to understand and put into practice the true nature of Peters command in 1 Peter 3:15 as it is strategically situated in its defi ning context. George J. Zemek, Academic Dean, The Expositors Seminary, Jupiter, Florida.

Book excerpt: This book is Van Til's most complete succinct introduction to his method of defending the faith. Here he presents the underpinnings of this uniquely biblical approach. Van Til shows how Christian apologetics is rooted in a unified system of scriptural truth, a worldview that encompasses all spheres of knowledge. Noting the ultimate conflict between Christian and non-Christian systems, Van Til sets forth a method of argument that centers on an all-important, biblically defined point of contact with the unbeliever. In this second edition William Edgar, a leading proponent of pre-suppositional apologetics, provides a new introduction and explanatory notes throughout the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the most common approaches to apologetics, which is most effective? The goal of apologetics is to persuasively defend Christianity against charges of falsehood, inconsistency, or credulity. It's an intellectual discipline that serves to bolster the faith of Christian believers and to aid the task of evangelism, but are some methods more effective than others? Five Views on Apologetics examines the "how-to" of apologetics, putting five prominent techniques under the microscope: Classical – represented by William Lane Craig Evidential – represented by Gary Habermas Cumulative Case – represented by Paul D. Feinberg Presuppositional – represented by John M. Frame Reformed Epistemology – represented by Kelly James Clark Offering a forum for presentation, critique, and defense, this book allows the contributors for the different viewpoints to respond to the others. Your own informed conclusions can then guide you as you meet the questions of a needy world with the claims of the gospel. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.
