Book Synopsis The Dynamics and Contradictions of Evangelisation in Africa by : Peter Acho Awoh
Download or read book The Dynamics and Contradictions of Evangelisation in Africa written by Peter Acho Awoh and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2011 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically discusses missionary Christianity and colonization in Africa as twin enterprises with a common ambition. While the colonialist set out to invest capital and reap profit, the missionary desire was to tend and turn African souls from damnation. It was this desire that drove the missionaries into the interior, propelled by the belief that no land was too remote to escape their attention and vigilance. It equally kept missionary zeal buoyant. The clarification of the concept of salvation within the Roman Catholic Church during the Vatican II Council set in motion the current lethargy that has in some places crippled the mission itself. In retrospect, one can begin to wonder why Africans became Christians. What reasons motivated the early adherents to cling to this foreign religion? Were there some internal deficiencies in African traditional religions, which the Africans hoped to remedy by joining the new religion? Or was it just part of the wholesale flirting with whatever was foreign and perceived to be modern? What baits were used by the missionaries to entice Africans? Christianity posed a danger to many of the time-honoured answers to African problems. These were the 'values' Africans converting to Christianity were expected to abandon. Why have Christians continually returned to their abandoned roots in time of crisis? This moving, well argued, richly documented and empirically substantiated study concludes by cautioning against the stubborn drive at radical conversion to Christianity with scant regard to the imperatives of enculturation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight Cardinals each give papers on the key themes for the modern world: mission and evangelization. They are better placed than most to give good reasons for missionary enterprise to find a new validity and purpose. Traditionally, mission was about Western people bringing the truth to "less fortunate" people. But now white people in the Roman Catholic Church constitute a minority and the fastest-growing areas of population for the Catholic Church are South America and most particularly the African continent. The whole theory and theology of mission has to be rethought and this is one of the greatest challenges that the Roman Catholic Church has to face.

African governments are investing close to $100bn dollars annually for new infrastructure in communication. There are presently over 500 million mobile phones in Africa. Nigeria remains the economic hub of Africa. With an approximately 50% Christian population, this explosion poses opportunities and challenges for evangelisation in Nigeria. Although the internet boom is still on the rise, print media has remained an important media of information. This work investigates how church evangelisation can maximise these media opportunities. Book excerpt: Northeast India has witnessed several nationality movements during the 20th century. The oldest and one of the most formidable has been that of the Nagas — inhabiting the hill tracts between the Brahmaputra river in India and the Chindwin river in Burma (now Myanmar). Rallying behind the slogan, ‘Nagaland for Christ’, this movement has been the site of an ambiguous relation between a particular understanding of Christianity and nation-making. This book, based on meticulous archival research, traces the making of this relation and offers fresh perspectives on the workings of religion in the formation of political and cultural identities among the Nagas. It tracks the transmutations of Protestantism from the United States to the hill tracts of Northeast India, and its impact on the form and content of the nation that was imagined and longed for by the Nagas. The volume also examines the role of missionaries, local church leaders, and colonial and post-colonial states in facilitating this process. Lucidly written and rigorous in its analyses, this book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of South Asian history, religion, political science, sociology and social anthropology, and particularly those concerned with Northeast India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obedience brings much blessing, not only to us but to others. As we do what God tells us to do, and go where He sends us in His plan and purpose, many lives get blessed and saved delivered and set free. Very often many seeds have been sown in someone’s life. Seeds bring forth life! We may see that person come to Jesus, but many others in prayer and sowing seeds have been involved in that person’s conversion. How Jesus loves us, and continually draws us to Himself, even before we are aware of it ourselves. What a loving, merciful, heavenly Father we have!
