Book excerpt: In addition, we found that 20-, 30-, and 40-s delays to reinforcement lead to discrimination acquisition for the majority of subjects. The availability of identical responses during the delay did not prevent response maintenance for 2 out of 3 subjects or discrimination acquisition for 2 out of 3 subjects. For 1 out of 2 subjects, discrimination acquisition was hindered when the number of responses targeted during each session was increased. These results suggest that delayed reinforcement can produce acquisition and maintenance under specific conditions. In addition, we found that longer intertrial intervals (time between delivery of a reinforcer and the presentation of the next trial) most likely do not account for cases in which discrimination acquisition fails to occur under conditions of delayed reinforcement.

Book excerpt: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other developmental disabilities often exhibit invariant responding (i.e., restricted behavioral repertoires), deficits in communication, and challenging behavior. A variety of interventions have targeted increasing variant responding such as extinction, lag schedules of reinforcement, and percentile schedules of reinforcement. An additional variation studied in the basic literature entails the inclusion of a delay to reinforcement. Results of basic studies indicate that the inclusion of a delay to reinforcement leads to an increase in the variety of responses. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effects of a delay to reinforcement on the variability of communication responses during functional communication training with children with developmental disabilities with histories of engagement in challenging behavior. Results indicated that the delay to reinforcement increased variant communicative responding with all four participants.

It introduces the concept of translational scholarship and examines real-world value in developing relevant interventions. Each area of coverage reviews current findings on autism from basic research and, then, discusses the latest applied research literature to create a roadmap for researchers, clinicians, and scientist-practitioners to develop new, effective strategies as children, adolescents, and adults with autism continue to learn and grow. Featured coverage includes: Why practice needs science and how science informs practice. The social learning disorder of stimulus salience in autism. Assessment and treatment of problem behaviors associated with transitions. Understanding persistence and improving treatment through behavioral momentum theory. The behavioral economics of reinforcer value. Increasing tolerance for delay with children and adults with autism. Autism Service Delivery is an essential resource for researchers, clinicians and scientist-practitioners, and graduate students in the fields of developmental psychology, behavioral therapy, social work, clinical child and school psychology, occupational therapy, and speech pathology.

Contributing to this 12-chapter edition are 11 scholar programs (Alpine Learning Center; ASCENT; Autism Center at the University of Washington; CABAS Program; Children's Unit at SUNY Binghamton; Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center; Groden Center; LEAP Program; Summit Academy Sussex Consortium; and Valley Program), answering a common set of questions concerning the treatment of very young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, using a range of ABA technology. This book addresses educational settings including public, private and university-based programs in America. It is an especially valuable resource for parents, professionals and administrators who are in the process of developing programs for the preschool student. Topics discussed include: * Addressing problem behaviors, social skills, and play * Teaching speech and language through verbal behavior framework, visual supports, sign language, and other augmentative/naturalistic methods * Measuring outcomes of students * Conducting transition to school age programs * Determining a child's eligibility for admission and the diagnostic materials used

In the second section of this book, you'll find ways to enhance students' receptive and expressive repertoires by developing their ability to read, spell, construct sentences, and use grammar. Finally, you'll find out how to teach students to apply the skills they've learned to higher order cognitive and social functions, including perspective-taking, empathy, mathematical reasoning, intelligence, and creativity. This applied behavior analytic training approach will help students make many substantial and lasting gains in language and cognition not possible with traditional interventions.

Book excerpt: Impulsive behavior in young children has been decreased in self-control training procedures that delay reinforcement gradually over time. Such procedures typically utilize fixed delays to reinforcement during training trials. The purpose of the present study was to examine preferences between fixed and variable delay schedules to reinforcement with five children with autism. During the first phase of the study, children were asked to make a choice between receiving a reinforcer immediately or after a delay. During the second phase, children were asked to make a choice between a fixed or variable delay schedule to reinforcement by sitting on one of two corresponding sitting squares associated with each schedule. Though two participants did select to delay reinforcement, findings indicate that immediate reinforcement was more preferred than delayed reinforcement. However, no group consensus for a variable delay preference was found. Results showed two participants preferring the fixed delay, two preferring the variable delay, and one showing no preference for either.Impulsive behavior in young children has been decreased in self-control training procedures that delay reinforcement gradually over time.
