Book excerpt: Aerodynamic unsteady forces in stationary and rotating wings are analyzed in this dissertation by using a combination of time-resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV) and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) techniques. Recent progress in experimental measurements has demonstrated the use of TR-PIV to calculate forces by applying the integral conservation of momentum equation in its different forms. However, a more accurate and robust method is needed for unsteady forces calculations. With this in mind, a modified pressure Poisson method is developed and applied in this work, showing its superior behavior compared to other methodologies described in the past. The independence of the calculated forces shows the robustness and stability of the method. Whereas force calculations have been recently considered, the role of flow structures in force fluctuations has not been revealed yet and it is the main focus of this study. To elucidate these relations, a hybrid PIV-POD analysis is applied to reconstruct the velocity field from the most energetic modes of the flow. A model describing the vortex-force relations is proposed in terms of lift and drag variations during the vortex shedding process. A spectral analysis of the calculated forces suggests symmetric periodic lift, drag and circulation variations at the shedding frequency. Moreover, lift, drag and circulation signals are in phase, which supports lift-circulation proportionality. However, non-symmetric drag fluctuations are found at double the shedding frequency within a shedding cycle. For instance, when a positive or negative circulation vortex detaches, different values in the maximum and minimum drag are obtained. The data and physical relations obtained in this work such as main frequencies, vortex-force fluctuations and behavior of reduced-order models can aid in the development of CFD applications at low Rey . The methodology described can be applied to any moving or stationary wing at different Reynolds numbers and angles of attack which would provide additional data for numerical codes. Furthermore, accurate measurements of unsteady forces allow determining narrower and more precise safety margins. Moreover, these measurements could be of application in flow control since forces are related to flow features simultaneously.

The research experimentally investigates the individual and combined effects of periodic unsteady wake flows and freestream turbulence intensity (Tu) on heat transfer and aerodynamic behavior of the separation zone. Heat transfer experiments were carried out at Reynolds number of 110,000, 150,000, and 250,00 based on the suction surface length and the cascade exit velocity. Aerodynamic experiments were performed at Re = 110,000 and 150,000. For the above Re-numbers, the experimental matrix includes Tus of 1.9%, 3.0%, 8.0%,13.0% and three different unsteady wake frequencies with the steady inlet flow as the reference configuration. Detailed heat transfer and boundary layer measurements are performed with particular attention paid to the heat transfer and aerodynamic behavior of the separation zone at different Tus at steady and periodic unsteady flow conditions. The objectives of the research are (a) to quantify the effect of Tu on the aero-thermal behavior of the separation bubble at steady inlet flow condition, (b) to investigate the combined effects of Tu and the unsteady wake flow on the aero-thermal behavior of the separation bubble, and (c) to provide a complete set of heat transfer and aerodynamic data for numerical simulation that incorporates Navier-Stokes and energy equations. The analysis of the experimental data reveals details of boundary layer separation dynamics which is essential for understanding the physics of the separation phenomenon under periodic unsteady wake flow and different Reynolds number and Tu. To provide a complete picture of the transition process and separation dynamics, extensive intermittency analysis was conducted. Ensemble averaged maximum and minimum intermittency functions were determined leading to the relative intermittency function. In addition, the detailed intermittency analysis reveals that the relative intermittency factor follows a Gaussian distribution confirming the universal character of the relative intermittency function.

Book excerpt: Unsteady flow and its effects on the boundary layer of a low pressure turbine blade is complex in nature. The flow encountered in a low pressure turbine contains unstructured free-stream turbulence, as well as structured periodic perturbations caused by upstream vane row wake shedding. Researchers have shown that these conditions strongly influence turbine blade performance and boundary layer separation, especially at low Reynolds numbers. In order to simulate these realistic engine conditions and to study the effects of periodic unsteadiness, a moving bar wake generator has been designed and characterized for use in the Air Force Research Labs low speed wind tunnel. The layout is similar to other traditional squirrel cage designs, however, the entire wake generator is enclosed inside the wind tunnel, up-stream of a linear cascade. The wake shed from the wake generator was characterized by its momentum deficit, wake width, and peak velocity deficit. It is shown that the wakes produce a periodic unsteadiness that is consistent with other wake generator designs. The effect of the periodic disturbances on turbine blade performance has been investigated at low Reynolds number using the highly loaded, AFRL designed L1A low pressure turbine profile. Wake loss measurements, pressure coefficient distribution, and particle image velocimetry was used to quantify the L1A blade performance with unsteady wakes at a Reynolds number of 25,000 with 0.5% and 3.4% free-stream turbulence. Wake loss data showed that the inclusion of periodic wakes reduced the profile losses by 56% compared to steady flow losses. Previous pressure coefficient distributions showed that the L1A blade profile, under steady flow conditions, has non-reattaching separated flow along the suction surface. With the inclusion of the periodic wakes, the pressure coefficient profile revealed that the flow separation had been dramatically reduced to a small separation bubble. The wake passing event was split into six phases and captured using two-dimensional planer PIV. The interaction between the passing wakes and the separation bubble was noted. The bubble was observed to grow in size between passing wakes, but was only able to achieve a fraction of the original level of separation. The streamlines through the unrestricted blade passage were able to better follow the blade profile, indicating an improved exit flow angle with lower losses. The data shows that the wake generator was successfully implemented into the wind tunnel and is able to properly simulate blade row interactions.

The focus is on two wing classes: (1) large aspect-ratio wings and (2) small aspect-ratio delta-type wings. Aerodynamic design issues in general are not dealt with. Discrete numerical simulation methods play a progressively larger role in aircraft design and development. Accordingly, in the introduction to the book the different mathematical models are considered, which underlie the aerodynamic computation methods (panel methods, RANS and scale-resolving methods). Special methods are the Euler methods, which as rather inexpensive methods embrace compressibility effects and also permit to describe lifting-wing flow. The concept of the kinematically active and inactive vorticity content of shear layers gives insight into many flow phenomena, but also, with the second break of symmetry---the first one is due to the Kutta condition---an explanation of lifting-wing flow fields. The prerequisite is an extended definition of separation: “flow-off separation” at sharp trailing edges of class (1) wings and at sharp leading edges of class (2) wings. The vorticity-content concept, with a compatibility condition for flow-off separation at sharp edges, permits to understand the properties of the evolving trailing vortex layer and the resulting pair of trailing vortices of class (1) wings. The concept also shows that Euler methods at sharp delta or strake leading edges of class (2) wings can give reliable results. Three main topics are treated: 1) Basic Principles are considered first: boundary-layer flow, vortex theory, the vorticity content of shear layers, Euler solutions for lifting wings, the Kutta condition in reality and the topology of skin-friction and velocity fields. 2) Unit Problems treat isolated flow phenomena of the two wing classes. Capabilities of panel and Euler methods are investigated. One Unit Problem is the flow past the wing of the NASA Common Research Model. Other Unit Problems concern the lee-side vortex system appearing at the Vortex-Flow Experiment 1 and 2 sharp- and blunt-edged delta configurations, at a delta wing with partly round leading edges, and also at the Blunt Delta Wing at hypersonic speed. 3) Selected Flow Problems of the two wing classes. In short sections practical design problems are discussed. The treatment of flow past fuselages, although desirable, was not possible in the frame of this book.
